Animal Profile

Surfer Stevie

Hello, my name is Surfer Stevie. My animal id is #236500. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/11/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Surfer Stevie is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. He was aloof with a relaxed body for most of his intake exam, allowing handling but would become tense during tasks. Throughout his stay, he has displayed fearful behavior and handling sensitivities. Surfer Stevie has often been observed to baulk on leash and scramble, usually having to be muscled into kennel. On walks, he will occasionally check in and take treats. He has also been reported to snap at handlers when being clipped. In two separate incidents, Surfer Stevie redirected onto the handler, both were bites and releases with no broken skin. In kennel, he has been observed to be scraping his teeth and chewing at his kennel doorknob intensely. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Surfer Stevie arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. Initially when Surfer arrived he was fearful and would baulk on leash. However recently Surfer has become rope reactive. Biting the leash while in walks. During one instance after leash biting Surfer redirected onto the handler and bit them on the thigh. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Summary:: 9/17/25: Surfer Stevie greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and high curved tail. Off leash, he is neutral with high tail then disengages and does not reapproach.

Summary (6):: 10/13/25: Surfer Stevie is at the front of his kennel playing with a toy as handlers approach. He is then easily double leashed and removed from kennel. He would continue to walk ahead with the toy in his mouth and would walk at a slow pace. Once in front of the room with a neutral body, he would baulk and refuse to move. Mild leash pressure is then used to assist him to move ahead and he is then muscled into his kennel shortly after. As handlers go to remove the leashes with a hook, Surfer Stevie would hover his toys and begin to growl as the hook gets closer. Leashes are then removed and interaction is then ended. 10/13/25: ACS report that upon returning Surfer Steve as they went to clip his leash, he head-whipped towards the handlers hand and began to slightly vocalize. While walking towards his kennel, he would then turn to grab the leash and is muscled away - which shortly after he would turn towards the handlers thigh and bite. It was a quick bite and release, no broken skin. 10/10/25: Surfer Stevie is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. Before the handler leashes him, he picks up and holds a toy in his mouth. The handler leashes him and brings him out of the kennel, but briefly puts him back into his kennel to allow another handler and dog to walk past. While waiting, Surfer paws at the door. The handler then brings him out of the kennel and walks out the building. On the street, Surfer Stevie walks ahead of the handler with light tension on the leash and continues to hold his toy in his mouth. He has no interest in passersby and other dogs. When returning, Surfer Stevie drops his toy before entering the building. The handler clips their leash and returns Surfer Stevie to his kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 10/10/25: Surfer Stevie is observed to be scraping his teeth and chewing at his kennel door knob intensely while the room is inactive. 10/8/25: ACS report that Surfer Stevie snapped at them when they went to go and clip their leash. 10/3/25: Surfer Stevie displays the same behaviors as of (10/2) with one unfamiliar handler outside for a walk. Please refer to those notes. 10/2/25: Surfer Stevie is removed from his kennel and taken to the street for a relief walk. He has a neutral body that loosens after every shake off. He shakes-off a couple times throughout the walk. On leash, he walks ahead of original handler, and will often turn around the check in with both handlers. He is rewarded for every check in. He does not react to people passing by and is receptive to the use of treats. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 10/01/25: Surfer Stevie is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them gently and begins barking and howling as handler unlocks the kennel door. He is leashed while distracted with more treats and walks with handler out to the street for his walk. While outside he passes people without issue and when seeing dogs will stare at them and pull toward them mildly with a tense posture but with distance is very manageable and loses interest shortly after. Surfer stops to use the bathroom during his walk and accepts treats tossed or handed to him by handler, he walks for a while more before being brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash and upon returning, handler tosses treats for him into kennel. Surfer Stevie returns to kennel without issue and interaction is ended shortly after. 9/30/25: It is reported that Surfer Stevie, without warning, turned towards handler as they were about to re-enter kennel and lunged and attempted to snap at handler abdomen. Handler tossed a treat in the kennel, he followed, and as the leash was removed he began to leash bite. Handler tossed secondary treat and interaction was ended. 9/29/25 (Late Entry): It is reported that Surfer Stevie would baulk in front of the kennel, handler then muscles him into kennel. As he enters the kennel, Surfer then turn towards the handler baring teeth and snapping at the leash. The leash is removed safely afterwards & interaction is then ended.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Surfer Stevie so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/ Handling Sensitivity: Surfer Stevie has been observed to baulk on leash and move his legs away from contact. It is important to always go slow and give Stevie the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Stevie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Leash Biting: Surfer has been observed to bite the leash. During one instance after biting the leash Surfer redirected onto the handler and bite them on the thigh. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
