Jacobo
Hello, my name is Jacobo. My animal id is #242922. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/3/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Jacobo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Jacobo when first entering care has shown high level of defensive aggression, including hard barking and lunging at staff on approach and growling or snapping at the leash during handling. Jacobo is social with staff in the care center but has displayed concerning behaviors that need to be properly managed. Medically, Jacobo is apparently healthy.

Jacobo came to the shelter through an owner surrender after his family faced a housing crisis. He's a thoughtful, sensitive dog who can be playful and affectionate once he feels safe. In the shelter, he shows curiosity, enjoys exploring, and has moments of goofiness like zooming around the yard or offering a paw for treats, but he can also feel overwhelmed by new situations and needs time to build trust. My Ideal Home Jacobo would thrive in a calm, adult-only home with experienced adopters who understand fearful or reactive dogs. A predictable routine, patient handling, and positive-reinforcement training will help him feel secure. He does best with slow introductions, clear boundaries, and an environment that minimizes sudden stressors like loud noises or lots of foot traffic. Good with Kids? No. Jacobo is recommended for an adult-only home, as he can become stressed and uncomfortable and needs space to feel safe. Good with Other Pets? He has lived with dogs and a cat in the past and was reported to be playful with them, but his current comfort level with unfamiliar animals is unknown. Careful, gradual introductions and management would be important in any multi-pet home. Leash Manners Jacobo can walk politely at times but may pull or show tension, especially when feeling unsure or when he sees other dogs. He benefits from calm, structured walks and handlers who can read his body language and give him space when needed. Overall Health Recovered from CIRDC and doing well overall. Behavior Determination Level 4 - Experienced Adopters. Jacobo needs knowledgeable, patient guardians who can support him through fear, reactivity, and confidence-building with consistent training and management. Other Fun Facts Jacobo enjoys chasing tennis balls, sniffing around the yard, and having bursts of zoomies. He knows basic cues, likes enrichment activities, and has been described as caring and playful once he's comfortable. He also enjoys car rides and, according to his previous family, is quite the snorer!

Upon approach, Jacobo hard barked and lunged at staff member. Upon intake, owner was asked to muzzle and leash him before walking in. Staff was able to take the leash from the owner and start to walk back to medical. After walking from the owner, Jacobo was able to remove his muzzle and continued to whale eye the handler while walking back. Once staff and Jacobo were separated with a gate (without any pressure at all), Jacobo began to hard bark at staff.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding:Owner stated that there is no resource guarding and she can take things from his mouth without issue but previously wrote that Jacobo would growl or hard bark when toys or food was approached. Training should include management and observation, feeding and playing in controlled environments, and implementing desensitization and counter-conditioning if guarding behaviors are observed. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior:He will chew on shoes.Provide appropriate chew items, increase mental enrichment (puzzle feeders, training games), and supervise to prevent rehearsal of destructive behaviors. Redirect to acceptable items and reinforce calm behavior. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In the prior home Jacobo isn noted to be fearful of storms and fireworks.Upon approach, Jacobo hard barked and lunged at staff member. Upon intake, owner was asked to muzzle and leash him before walking in. Staff was able to take the leash from the owner and start to walk back to medical. After walking from the owner, Jacobo was able to remove his muzzle and continued to whale eye the handler while walking back. Once staff and Jacobo were separated with a gate (without any pressure at all), Jacobo began to hard bark at staff.Training should focus on confidence-building, cooperative care, and controlled introductions, using slow approaches and pairing handling with high-value rewards. Avoid sudden movements and restraint; implement desensitization to environmental triggers like storms and loud noises. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Separation anxiety: Jacobo is known to have separation anxiety and will bark when left alone.Training should include gradual desensitization to absences, enrichment activities, and creating a safe space. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration:Owner reported that Jacobo will bark at strangers, squirrels, and birds while on walks. He will bark at other dogs so he can get closer to them according to the owner.Training should focus on counter-conditioning and desensitization to triggers at a safe distance, reinforcing calm engagement with the handler. Use management tools like visual barriers and structured exits to prevent rehearsal of reactive behaviors. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
