Bite history:: On 7/28/2026 at around 12:05 An ACS/Canine rep went to retrieve a leash that was left in Bilbo's kennel. They were feeding Bilbo a treat and slightly opened the kennel door to retrieve the leash. Bilbo pushed past the handler quickly and exited the kennel. When loose in the room he began to fight with the pop-up in front of his kennel. The handler grabbed him by the medical collar, as he was in the handler's hands. Bilbo then began to kennel fight with the dog in a top kennel to which he quickly turned and bit the handler on the bottom of their left forearm, leaving a puncture that broke skin and left the area bruised and swollen. Wound was treated on site and will not be seeking medical attention. 7/25: Bilbo out for a walk - he was in a top kennel, and when the staff memeber opened the door, he bolted out. the staff member caught him in their arms, at which point he began hard barking and lunging towards the pop up crate and kennels below him. In the process of doing so, he attempted to push off of the staff member left arm with his back legs, which caused him to scratch the inside of their left elbow and left pointer finger. The scratches were superficial but did draw blood; they cleaned their wounds prior to returning to work and will be seeking medical attention at City MD.

Summary:: Due to the bite incident, Bilbo is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 8/9/26:(KSV) Bilbo is standing at the front of the kennel, panting. When handler approaches, Bilbo begins demand barking repeatedly with a fast wagging tail. Handler offers treats and he takes them vigorously. Handler then closes the other side of his double kennel and places an enrichment item on the other side. Bilbo goes to the other side and grabs the enrichment item. The door is lifted and Bilbo takes the enrichment item. He then engages in the enrichment item and throwing it around. The interaction is then ended. 7/28/26: As handler went to retrieve a leash that was left in Bilbo's kennel. Handler was feeding Bilbo a treat and slightly opened the kennel door to retrieve the leash. Bilbo pushed past the handler quickly and exited the kennel. When loose in the room, Bilbo began to fight with the pop-up in front of his kennel. Handler grabbed him by the medical collar, and as he was in the handler's hands, he began to kennel fight with the dog in a top kennel, to which he quickly turned and bit the handler on the bottom of their left forearm, leaving a puncture that broke the skin. Handler dropped Bilbo on the floor, and he began to kennel fight with the other small dogs. The handler was able to quickly leash him and place him back into kennel with no further issues. 7/28/26: Bilbo is observed to be highly rope reactive, initial handler requested assistance due to Bilbo beginning to spin on leash while persistently biting the rope. The handler then tosses treats and uses squeaker sounds which he wasn't receptive towards. Handler then attempts to put Bilbo back in kennel with the leash and he would push himself out the kennel, even with handler muscling him into constantly. (please note, his kennel is in a corner next to a pop-up crate in a tight area). Another handler then steps in and takes the leash, a pet corrector is used and he would continue to fixate on the leash. Shortly after, he is then muscled back into his kennel with the door quickly shut behind him with the leash still in his mouth. Interaction was then ended due to the intensity of his rope reactivity. 7/25/26: It is noted on the behavior board that Bilbo "bites anything on/near the kennel bars".

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bilbo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite incident, we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to kennel reactivity and the risk for redirection, we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

On Leash Reactivity: Bilbo has been obsvered to be highly reactive to the other dogs in the kennel room. During one instance he redirected and bit the handler on the arm. Bilbo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Bilbo has been observed to be highly rope reactive. Noted to jump up, bite, hold, and spin while on leash. This behavior is very difficult to redirect. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
