Rocko
Hello, my name is Rocko. My animal id is #229301. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/12/2025.
Rocko is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Rocko in the care center has not been acclimating well to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Rocko will hypersalivate, rebound off his kennel door and is soaked in saliva when being removed from kennel. Rocko is social with staff, but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Rocko is apparently healthy.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. A volunteer writes: This handsome boy is Rocko...and he was quick to show me how friendly and smart he is. It was only our first interaction and yet he was quick to warm up....sitting languidly beside me as I rubbed his chin and ears and later leaning in and wiggling into me. I think he sensed I had some treats (a dog's nose is like super-sonic radar!) because he then sat down in front of me and looked up with an adorable "I'm getting a treat for this, right?" expression. As I started handing him the treat, he gave me his paw, which got him a second one...then he slowly went into the "down' position...and oh-my-goodness, that certainly deserved yet another treat! Rocko also loves toys and carries one on our walks, blissfully trotting down the street with it looking utterly adorable. We don't know Rocko's experience with other dogs, but when the shelter introduced him to a novel female, he greeted her with a soft, neutral frame; she ignored him and walked away, and after unsuccessfully trying to solicit her attention, Rocko gave up and walked away. Though Rocko was highly fearful when he first arrived and has been living in a stressful shelter environment, he's been a big friendly, playful boy with me. Sweet Rocko is currently residing at the Queens shelter while he hopes to find his fur-ever home.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/11/25 Rocko is introduced to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Rocko approaches the gate with a high flagging tail, keeping his distance from the gate line as the greeter dog solicits play at the gate line by play bowing. Rocko will displace sniff as he is let into the greeter dog's pen when she is kept on leash. As she is taken over to sniff him, he creates distance, walking away with high hackles up. The greeter dog is kept at a distance while still on leash while Rocko is brought back over to the next pen. This concludes the interaction. 06/16/25 Rocko is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Rocko will approach the gate with a still, neutral frame, sitting in front of the gate adjacent to the novel male dog. Rocko remains self-present as the novel male dog scents him through the gate and Rocko remains still, reluctant to move. Rocko is eventually moved away from the gate as well as the novel male dog, being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 06/15/25 Rocko is introduced at the gate to a Female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Rocko approaches the gate with a soft, neutral frame. The greeter dog will approach the gate initially, before quickly, disengaging and walking away from the gate in which Rocko was standing. Rocko will attempt to solicit her attention, remaining self-present, appearing interested as the greeter dog ignores him. The greeter dog will seek attention from the handlers in her pen, while Rocko remains self-present, hyper-salivating. Rocko will eventually walk away on his own while the greeter dog remains aloof. Rocko is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 8/18: Rocko is seeing jumping on his kennel door and wailing once he's able to stand on it. He slips down due to the amount of saliva on his paws, floor, and kennel door due to his hypersalivation. 08/14/25 (Trainer Note): Rocko is observed throughout the morning pacing back and forth on the door of his kennel, panting with dilated pupils. He is doing the same as the handler approaches. Rocko is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He is loose and social with staff, leaning into contact. The handler notes that his neck and chest are soaked in saliva. He engages with interest in the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler between each. Rocko responds to sit, down, heel, and paw cues. The handler plays the 123 game with him and attempts to lure him into TAB but he is panting too heavily. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 8/11/25: Rocko was leashed with ease and walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Rocko solicited contact with a familiar handler and accepted pets. When it was time to leave the yard, Rocko was reluctant to leave familiar handler. They tossed a treat towards the gate and walked out with him. Rocko walked the rest of the way back to kennel with handler 1 without issue. Handler dropped a soft squeaker toy into kennel which Rocko picked up and took onto his kuranda bed.
Summary (6):: 08/06/25 (Trainer Note): Rocko is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Rocko's neck and feet are soaked with saliva. He participates readily in the 123 game and is intermittently able to be lured into a breath. However, Rocko maintains a moderate pant and dilated pupils for the duration of the interaction. He attempts repeatedly to climb up onto the handler to solicit contact, but is easily redirected. Rocko leans into contact and responds to sit, down, stay, and heel cues. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 07/26/25 (Trainer Note): Rocko is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Rocko engages readily in the various enrichment items. Handler then pulls him to the side and works with him on the 123 game and the yes verbal marker. He responds readily to sit, down, and heel cues. Rocko is returned to kennel without issue. 7/23/25: (Volunteer Note) I walked Rocko for the first time yesterday. He quickly warmed up, sitting languidly beside me as I rubbed his chin and ears and later leaning in and wiggling into me. Later in our interaction, I think he sensed I had some treats because he then sat down in front of me and looked up with an adorable “I’m getting a treat for this, right?” expression. As I started handing him the treat, he gave me his paw and I gave him another treat. He then slowly went into the “down’ position and yep, I had to give him another. Later, he started trying to put his nose in my pocket with treats and repeatedly stopped to sit and look up at me wanting more. I didn’t want to encourage this behavior so I stopped all treats and continued our walk. He was fine and pretty soon stopped the behavior. I did a few more short interactions and he was like above – wiggling into me and enjoying being pet. Rocko also loves toys. I gave him one after leashing him and he carried it for most of the walk. He pulls a little on the leash – nothing extreme. 07/08/25 (Trainer Note): Rocko is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Rocko allows the handler to attach a drag leash. Handler notes that his chin, neck, and feet are saturated in saliva. He struggles to focus and is unable to take deep breaths. However, he does engage with interest in the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler between items. Rocko also responds well to the 123 game. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 07/01/25 (Trainer Note): Rocko is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Handler works with him on the 123 game and take a breath. Rocko engages readily and is returned to kennel without issue. -
Summary (7):: 06/23/25 (trainer note): Rocko was standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He jumped on his kennel door with a loose tail wag and was easily leashed and walked to the live room. He engaged with enrichment items until he eventually lost interest in that activity. Handler sat down and Rocko approached with a loose body and solicited contact from the handler. He took treats from hand gently and was easily leashed. On his way back to his kennel as he passed the other barking dogs, he got startled by the noise and flinched. He was returned to his kennel without issue. 6/16/25: Rocko approached handler at front of kennel without hesitation and was leashed with ease. He walked to the BA room for his assessment. Rocko was collared by handler 2. Rocko displayed FAS by hypersalivating. Rocko would approach handlers when offered treats and took them very gently with a soft mouth. Rocko was returned to kennel with ease by tossing a treat which he followed in. 6/16/25: Rocko is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he greets the other dog at the hate with no interest and a tense body. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard and hard stares at dogs on the way back to his kennel. He jumps up at the door while whimpering as the handler locks it and walks away. 6/15/25: Rocko retreated onto kuranda bed as handler approached. He came forward when handler called him to them and was leashed with ease. Rocko walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Rocko was timid but appeared social with other dogs and loosened up in their presence. He persistently pulled towards a dog waiting outside the pen. Rocko pulled hard on the way back to kennel and became skittish when passing through his kennel room. Handler waited in the hallway with Rocko until his kennel was ready. Rocko was panting and pulling on leash, unable to settle at first but eventually sat down on handler's shoe. He resisted returning to kennel by quickly pushing his way back out, but was secured safely on a second attempt.
Date of initial:: 6/14/2025
Summary:: timid, allowed all handling
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Rocko is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Rocko is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Rocko should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be his choice to approach a new person or thing. Rocko would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Rocko has been observed to lunge at another dog while he was on a leash. He may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
