Eden
Hello, my name is Eden. My animal id is #218972. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 5 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/21/2025.
Eden is at risk due to behavior concerns. Eden arrived at the care centers as a stray with no previous known history. During her intake she displayed social behavior, had a relaxed body and allowed all handling. Throughout her stay she has remained friendly with handlers, regularly accepting pets and treats. Eden has been observed to be very on leash reactive towards bikes, scooters, skateboards, dogs, and cats. She will intensely kennel fight as she is removed from the room, as well as, as she is walked past the pop up crates and cat kennels. Eden will lunge, hard bark, and become both fixated and tense when spotting any of the above mentioned. Over time she has become harder to redirect. Recently she has started to hump handlers, is unable to be redirected, and it escalates to leash biting. Medically, she is healthy at this time.

Eden is a 4-year-old large mixed breed who was found as a stray and is now searching for a forever home. She's an affectionate, people-loving girl with a big heart, ready to bring joy to the right family. My Ideal Home Eden would thrive in an active home with experienced dog owners who can continue her training. She enjoys human interaction and will do best in a home where she can receive structure, love, and plenty of exercise. Good with Kids? Eden is best suited for a home with no children under 13, as she can be energetic and still needs guidance on her manners. Good with Other Dogs? Eden has shown some reactivity to other dogs while on leash and would do best as the only pet in the home. She will need slow introductions and continued training to improve her interactions. Leash Manners Eden is strong and pulls hard on leash, especially around other dogs. A front-clip harness and positive reinforcement training will help her learn better walking habits. Overall Health Eden appears to be in good health and has been examined by our medical team. Potential Challenges: Basic manners training needed (jumps up for attention) Leash reactivity towards other dogs High energy-needs both mental and physical stimulation Eden is eager to learn and bond with her future family! She will do best in a patient home that can help her become the best version of herself.

Date of intake:: 1/21/2025
Summary:: Friendly, required coaxing to come out of crate, allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 1/21/2025
Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined; not interested in treats
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Eden so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Eden has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner and when seeking treats. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Eden has been observed to pull towards dogs with a tense body in the kennel rooms and while on leash. Throughout her stay Eden has been observed to begin lunging and hard barking towards crates in the hallway, the cats, and bicycles on the street. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Eden will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: Eden has been observed to quickly become over aroused and begin to mount handlers. eden should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Eden. Please see handout on Arousal.
