Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 12/2/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 12/4/2025

Summary:: August has been obsvered to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to thrash on leash and quickly escalate to growling and baring teeth towards handlers. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety August is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 12/4/25: August is laying in the back of her kennel as the handler approaches. As the handler attempts to leash her, August stands up and slowly approaches the front with a neutral body. She is leashed and brought out the room. On the street, August walks ahead of the handler with moderate pulling; she walks without slowing down or stopping. The handler pulls her to the side to allow passersby to walk past, which she has no interest in. The handler walks her back to the shelter and clips their leash upon arrival. When returning August to her kennel, she sits outside. The handler adds leash pressure, but she begins to thrash. The handler tries once more and she does the same. The handler then walks August out the room and brings her to the office. There, August presents a slightly tense body as people walk in and out. After a few minutes, the handler, accompanied with a second handler, walk August back to her kennel. The first handler attempts to muscle her in, but August thrashes again. The second handler attempts to place a sling under her, but August retreats and growls at them. The first handler brings August out the room and the second handler tries a few more times to place the sling; August repeatedly retreats, growls and bears teeth at the second handler. When entering the room, the second handler leashes August. As both handlers attempt to bring her in kennel, August thrashes and lunges towards the second handler, snapping at their abdomen. Both handlers are able to muscle her into kennel. They remove their leashes with a hook. 12/03/25: August is laying near the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is carefully offered a treat and sniffs it but does not accept it. She is leashed slowly without issue and pushes her head against the kennel door to exit kennel. August walks with handler out to the street, while outside she pulls moderately and is constantly looking back nervously at handler. She walks with handler for a while and does not stop while walking, she passes people on the street without issue and continues to look back at handler frequently during her walk. As the walk progresses she becomes less nervous, her tail untucks and she stops to relieve herself. After a bit she stops suddenly and baulks, handler uses mild leash pressure to get her to continue walking, she shakes her head back and forth mildly before continuing to walk. She sees dogs while returning to the care centers and shows no reaction, she allows handler to clip her leash and walks back to kennel. At the front of her kennel August stops but with very slight leash pressure she is guided inside without further issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on August so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and the potential for defensive aggression we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: August has been obsvered to thrash on leash and escalate to growling and baring teeth when a handler attempts to use a sling. It is important to move slowly with August, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
