Animal Profile

Chase

Hello, my name is Chase. My animal id is #216866. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/16/2024.

Chase is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Chase has high kennel stress and deterioration in care. He frequently jumps on his kennel door, pants heavily, salivates, and has exhibited kennel-fighting behaviors. On walks, Chase pulls intensely, fixates on other dogs, and lunges or barks, often ignoring redirection efforts. While he occasionally seeks attention and remains soft and wiggly during interactions, his inability to self-regulate as led to him jumping on handlers, biting at clothes. Medically, Chase is currently healthy.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! A volunteer writes, "Chase ended 2024 in a rough spot. His owner had passed away and he was lost without a family. The landlord where he lived took care of him temporarily but Chase ultimately found his way to us. Chase is a big boy, with a big heart! You can tell how much he wants love and wants to love. He shoves his giant head against our legs, leaning his whole body and booty in for rubs. Chase has been dealt a rough hand and is coming into 2025 without a lot to go on but hope for a family who wants a big, loving, playful best friend. He has a big dopey smile, silly floppy ear, and a gentle soul. The landlord Chase lived with told us he is housetrained, very social and affectionate with strangers and children. He loves to play and be with people and knows the cues for sit and stay. "

Summary:: Due to Chase entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 12/23/24 Chase makes his way to playgroup displaying hyper-arousal as he makes his way to the play pens. He hops on his hind legs, screeching as he passes dogs with novel handlers. Chase cannot settle when introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Chase is running back and forth with wide eyes while hyper salivating. It's hard for Chase to settle so the interaction is cut short, and Chase is returned to kennel.

Summary (5):: ment 01/29/25 (Trainer Note): Chase is standing at the front of the kennel panting heavily as the handler approaches. He allows the handler to attach a drag leash and pulls hard to the canine training room. He allows the handler to attach a drag leash and engages readily with the various enrichment. Chase leans into contact, but jumps on the handler if not being immediately engaged. He moves frenetically around the room, often tucking his hind end underneath him and scooting around the room. Chase is able to orient towards the handler in between enrichment items, but is not able to hold it for more than a moment without jumping up. He is easily leashed. On the way back to kennel, Chase pulls towards the other dogs, attempting to kennel fight. The handler prevents him and he begins to whine. He enters the kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 1/28/25: Chase was leashed with ease and pulled hard in the direction of the BA room. He immediately engaged with the LATTE puzzles set out for him, which he seemed familiar with. Chase was highly social and leaned his whole body into a familiar handler when scratched along his back. He was able to focus on completing his puzzles and was able to be redirected to them if he got distracted. Chase seemed at ease in the BA room with familiar enrichment and handlers. After some time in the room he was returned to kennel without issue. 01/23/25: Chase is observed jumping in front of his kennel door, heavy panting, and salivating when the handler walks away he begins to lick his kennel walls. 01/21/25 Chase is jumping onto his kennel door excessively, panting heavily. The handler will wait for him to drop to all fours and is leashed, proceeding outside to the play pens. Chase will pull his way out of the building intensely, panting heavily with wide red eyes. Chase enters the pen and will continue to pull hard. He pulls around the pen, unable to settle. The handler will have him sit, administering treats to him in the process. He takes treats gently when administered and the rest of the treats are tossed into the snow, and he is cued to "find it". Chase will seek out treats, keeping him occupied. Chase is returned to the facility where he will pull less, maintaining a somewhat moderate pace. He enters the building as well as his kennel quickly. 1/16/2025: Chase is observed to kennel fight when the handler takes him out for a walk. Once out of the kernel room he tries to hard pull his way back into the kennel and vocalizes. When passing the other kennel room he hard pulls his way inside. Chase ignores toys and treats offered to him as a distraction. 1/15: Staff report that during Chase's morning walk, he became aroused and started to jump up and bite at their clothes. 01/14/25: Chase is jumping up at the front of kennel excitedly as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats to redirect him from the door, but he shows no interest. Chase is leashed with ease and handler waits for him to stop jumping before exiting. Chase pulls hard out to the play yard and will excitedly jump up on handler to solicit attention. Handler tosses treats away to redirect him and he spends a few minutes engaging with them. Chase maintains a loose, wiggly frame as handler reaches down and pets along his head, neck, and body. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely.

Summary (7):: 1/12/25 Chase is jumping onto his kennel door as the handler approaches. Chase is loose and wiggly, not being able to settle when the handler attempts to leash. Chase is leashed as he wiggles out of kennel, pulling his way out of the kennel room. Chase is aroused exiting the facility, jumping excessively on and off the handler. The handler turns the lead into a harness, stabilizing Chase at this point, making him pull less. Chase is treat motivated, quickly swallowing treats as they fall to the floor. Chase is still unable to settle, jumping around, jumping on and off the handler, and still pulling. Chase is returned to the facility, pulling his way back still aroused. Chase will enter the building and his kennel with no issue. 12/23/24 Chase is jumping on his kennel door as the handler approaches. He is wiggly when leashing but allows the handler to place the leash over his head before he pushes his way out of the door. Chase pulls very hard as he is walked outside for play group. Chase is extremely aroused and reactive to other dogs outside that are being walked. Chase will pull hard towards them panting heavily and standing on his back legs. Chase thrashes and jumps around as he is being walked when other dogs are passing, he does not keep walking forward but instead fixates on the other dogs and ignores anything else. He must be pulled away using leash pressure until the other dogs are out of sight and Chase enters the play yard. Chase continues to be highly aroused, jumping on handlers and ignoring treats. When the other dog comes into view, Chase is barking and lunging and handler 2 must leash him and remove him from the play yard to return him to his kennel. 12/22/24 A harness was added on to Chase. Chase remains soft, leaning in to be pet and rubbed while having the harness fitted. Chase will allow the handler to adjust it on him. Chase is returned to kennel. 12/22/24 Chase is standing on his kennel door with a loose frame. He remains soft and wiggly as he is leashed with ease. Chase is taken to the live room. Chase will solicit attention, not being able to settle. He will solicit pets as well as treats he does not eat. Chase will follow the handler around the room. Chase will become anxious, whimpering at the door. The handler will return Chase back to kennel as he pulls his way over to the kennel room. Chase is placed in his kennel but will try to flee. The handler must keep him inside before locking the kennel door. 12/18/2024: (late entry) Chase is reported to pull hard on walks which causes him to vomit. 12/17/2024:(late entry) Chase is reported to not want to walk outside and being fearful on the walk.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- We recommend Chase is placed in an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Chase displayed high level of jumping, pacing and unable to settle. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Social hyperarousal-In dogs is a state of heightened excitement and alertness triggered by social interactions or environmental stimuli, leading to behaviors like excessive barking, restlessness, jumping, mouthing, and pacing. Managing this condition involves consistent training with positive reinforcement, maintaining a structured routine, minimizing exposure to triggers, ensuring ample physical exercise, and providing mental stimulation through puzzle toys and interactive games. For severe cases, consulting a veterinary behaviorist or professional dog trainer is recommended Fearful/Anxiety- Chase is reported to become fearful on walks and during his handling assessment it was noted that he will display flinching behaviors, lip licking, heavy panting.To address Chase's fearfulness and anxiety, start by creating a calm and predictable environment to help him feel secure. Use desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to gradually expose him to walks and handling in a controlled manner, rewarding him with high-value treats for calm behavior. Begin with short, positive interactions, allowing him to approach at his own pace. Practice relaxation exercises, such as "settle" or "place," to encourage him to relax in specific areas. Provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation through regular exercise and interactive toys to help reduce anxiety. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and decompression period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Chase is reported to kennel fight when exiting the kennel room hard pulling and vocalizing. He will begin to pull towards other kennel rooms. Strength/leash pulling- Chaseis reported to pulls hard on the leash, to the point of coughing and honking. This behavior highlights his strength and the need for training to teach him to walk calmly on a leash. Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
