Sweet Tangerine
Hello, my name is Sweet Tangerine. My animal id is #220469. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/13/2025.
Sweet Tangerine is at risk due to behavior concerns. She arrived at the care centers as a stray with no known history. Sweet Tangerine has warmed up to select handlers, she leans in for pets and is very toy motivated. With her extended stay her dog reactive has intensified; Reported to become tense with hackles, challenging to redirect, hard barking, and now vocalizing directing her frustration towards staff members. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Sweet Tangerine is a beautiful, medium-sized mixed breed who came to us as a stray with no known history. Despite a tough start, she's ready to find a patient and loving home where she can learn to trust and thrive. My Ideal Home I'm looking for a calm and understanding home with experienced adopters who can help me build confidence at my own pace. A quiet environment without young children would be best for me as I get used to my new surroundings. Good with Kids? I need a home without young children. Fast movements and loud noises can make me nervous, so older, respectful kids (13+) may be okay after a careful introduction. Good with Other Dogs? I need a home where there are no other dogs, I would prefer to be the only love-bug! Leash Manners I'm a gentle walker with mild pulling. I might need a little encouragement at first, but once I trust you, I'll walk by your side. Overall Health I'm a healthy girl with a beautiful coat and no known medical concerns. I haven't been spayed yet, but I will be before I go home! Behavior Determination I'm a Level 3 dog, which means I'll need adopters who understand that I can be fearful and need time to adjust. I respond well to a slow, patient approach and high-value treats (cheese is my favorite!). Other Notes I may need extra time to settle into a new home. I should never be forced into new situations-I do best when I can move at my own pace. Positive reinforcement training will help me gain confidence! Fun Fact I was named Sweet Tangerine because, even though I was nervous at first, the staff saw my potential to warm up and shine like a bright, beautiful fruit! 🍊 If you have a heart for a dog who needs a little extra love and patience, I could be the one for you! Come meet me and see if we're a perfect match. ❤️ A Volunteer Wrote: "Well, the first part of her name couldn't suit her any better," someone remarked as they watched Sweet Tangerine curled up on my lap, trying to sneak in kisses. This dog is absolutely AWESOME! Funny, sweet, immediately relieving herself when she gets outside without ever pulling on a leash, hoping maybe she can play with the dogs in the neighboring pens...you name an attribute when it comes to a dog, and Sweet Tangerine has it. Please come meet her and prepare for endless love!

Summary:: 2/25/25: Sweet Tangerine greets another dog with a tense body, barking. 4/2/25: Sweet Tangerine approaches the gate with a neutral body and wagging tail. She sniffs the other dog then barks. She moves away exploring the pen. A decoy dog is placed in the middle pen and Sweet Tangerine is allowed to enter the pen off leash. She runs towards the decoy dog, slamming into the dog knocking it over. She then stands over the dog, tense body hackles raised. The handler moves the dog and Sweet Tangerine grabs the decoy dog in the neck area and lifts the dog up all while tense with hackles. She does not release when handlers call her or spray a pet corrector. Handler must pick up the leash and physically remove her from the pen.
Summary (5):: 7/1/25: Sweet Tangerine is sitting pressed up at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. A toy is used to leash her with ease. She grabs and holds the toy as she is removed from PAC and taken to the street. She drops and loses interested in the toy after relieving herself in the driveway. For the whole walk she is pulling very, very hard. When passing by a group of people she pulls even harder towards them, at one point she's on her hind legs. Handler has to keep a short leash while other people pass by. No dogs are spotted. As she is returned to kennel she is scrambling to her kennel whilst vocalizing in a shrieking manner and kennel fighting. 6/27/25: It is reported by staff that when potential adopters are in the the adoptions room, she will jump onto the door vocalizing. When attempting to kennel fight on the way out of the building she reportedly spun towards handlers on two separate occasions. She runs out of the room on her hind legs vocalizing loudly. 6/17/25: It was reported that Sweet Tangerine charged at a staff member while in kennel. Later in the day, she lunged and vocalized at the same staff member while on leash. 5/26/25: Sweet Tangerine is standing up at the front of her pop up crate with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She pulls very hard towards the other dogs in the pop up crates and is not easily redirected. In the yard she is loose as she runs around the pen. She is on alert for other dogs but no other dogs are in the yard. She takes treats softly and continues running around. She hops into the pool briefly but hops right out. When pet she heavily leans in with her hind end. She is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 5/12/25: Sweet Tangerine is laying down in the back of her pop-up crate as handler approaches. She quickly stands and is leashed. She briefly kennel fights as she is removed from the room. She is receptive to treats and is able to be redirected for the most part. When spotting other dogs, she becomes very tense, hard stares, and pulls very hard towards them. Handler uses leash pressure and muscle to pull her away. She is on edge and on the look out for the majority of the walk, becoming soft bodied and wiggly when pet. When sniffing she would press her snout into the ground and intensely sniff. She is returned to her crate without issue. 5/11/25: ACS report that Tangerine walks better with a toy. Signage was added. 4/28/25: Sweet Tangerine is lying down in kennel, she approached the front and stretches. She then stands up with a soft body. Sweet Tangerine is easily leashed and pulls out of the room. She begins sniffing the nearby crate, but is kept away. She pulls hard on the leash. Sweet Tangerine allows the handler to place a leash harness on her. With the leash harness, Sweet Tangerine pulls moderately with a loose body. She sees dogs walking past and pulls towards them. She is kept away. After her walk, Sweet Tangerine is returned to her crate without issue. 4/15/25: Sweet Tangerine is at the front of her crate with a tense body. She takes treats gently through the crate and is easily leashed. She exits the room pulling to the passing pop ups with a tense body, vocalizing briefly as she is exiting. She is brought into the elevator. Tangerine pulls towards the front of the elevator and paws at the door. When exiting she pulls very hard to the driveway with a tense body. She quickly grabs a toy and holds it for a bit before dropping it. She pulls very hard across the street. When waiting at a cross walk, Sweet Tangerine leans forward pulling hard on the leash. She is then walked back to the shelter and continues to duck and look under cars. When returning to the building Sweet Tangerine spots a toy and picks it up. She continues to carry the toy all the way to the crate and is returned without issue.
Summary (7):: 4/5/25: It is reported by staff that Sweet Tangerine will vocalize when being walked in the hallways of the building, even when other dogs are not present. 3/31/25: Sweet Tangerine is laying down in her crate as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed with ease, and she bolts out of her crate and begins to lunge and bark at a dog in a pop crate in the hallway. She is taken downstairs for a walk outside and would pull hard and jump up on her hind legs. She would hard stare with a tense body at dogs and people that were close by. She was unable to redirect with treats or toys. She approaches slowly and is offered treats by handler which she takes while being leashed. She is taken to the street for her walk, during which she pulls mildly and walks past people on the street without issue. She uses the bathroom outside and turns when handler calls to accept treats, this usually takes a few attempts to get her attention. She will stop and stare briefly at dogs she sees passing but is kept away and redirected by walking away. She is walked for a while more and stops to sniff often. She is brought back to the building and returned to kennel without issue. 2/14/25- Sweet Tangerine is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, she is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. She has no reaction to any stimuli and has a moderate pull. She is social with handler and gently takes treats. She is taken for her assessment where she is easily collared and is social with handlers. At some points she seeks exit and is at the door. Handler calls her over and she takes treats. She is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issues. 2/13/25: ACS report that Sweet Tangerine will bare teeth towards handlers when they attempt to leash. When approached Tangerine is trembling at the front of the kennel, handler tosses treat and tangerine is not receptive. Handler ends interaction.

Date of initial:: 2/13/2025
Summary:: Tense and whale eyeing, frozen for tasks
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sweet Tangerine so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No Children (Under 13): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Sweet Tangerine may be intimidated by children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Sweet Tangerine has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Sweet Tangerine should not visit dog parks, and should be the only pet. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Upon intake, Sweet Tangerine has been observed to growl and bare teeth at unfamiliar handlers and has been observed in kennel to do the same. Tangerine should never be forced to interact, she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Sweet Tangerine. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Bella's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Sweet Tangerine has been observed to lunge and vocalize towards people while on leash. She has also been observed to pull towards the other dogs in the kennel room. After reacting to the other dogs Sweet Tangerine has been observed to spin towards the handler. Tangerine will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
