Summary:: According to Lucky Lady's previous owner(s), Lucky Lady will hard bark, growl, and lunge towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs, and can be playful with other dogs. 8/8/26: Lucky Lady is introduced to a novel neutered male and approaches the fence with a tense forward leaning body and flagged mid level tail. She lip licks as she is fixated on the other dog, and when the other dog sniffs nearby the fence, Lucky Lady lunges and muzzle punches the fence. She continues to sit and stare at the other dog with hackles raised and slowly wags her tail. She is very difficult to redirect and continues to fixate on the other dog while being led out of the yard.

Summary (6):: 8/15/26: Lucky Lady is at the front of her kennel, hard barking and pawing at the door when handler approaches. She is leashed with a treat lure and is taken out of the kennel. She pulls hard all the way out of the room and heavy panting in elevator after. Her breathing is rapid and she displays wide eyes. Once she gets outside, she pulls toward the gates and relieves herself. She continues walking ahead of the handler with moderate leash tension. She will hard stare at other dogs and will attempt to pull toward them but handler is able to distract her with treats and pull away. Lucky Lady keep starring at them for some time before fully disengages. Lucky Lady is not interested in other people passerby. She is not seeking interaction with the handler and remains aloof. Her body is slightly tense and she is constantly panting. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Lucky Lady back into her kennel with no further issues.

Summary (7):: 8/8/26: Lucky Lady is at the front of the kennel. She jumps up on her hind legs with a soft body and wagging tail. Lucky is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. She begins to pull down the hall, looking toward the handlers legs with a closed mouth and a tense face. When passing an uncovered pop up crate, she quickly pulls towards the dog, tense. She is then kept away. Lucky is then jumps towards a person passing them. She is kept away. Lucky Lady is brought downstairs to the backyard for a brief interaction with another dog (see dog-dog notes). After, she is walked around the perimeter of the backyard. She relieves herself and stops to sniff various spots before she is walked back to the shelter. She pulls hard back to kennel and is returned with treats. The interaction is ended. 8/6/26: Lucky Lady is reported to refuse going down the stairs; she baulks right before the steps. 8/5/26: Lucky Lady is reported to resource guard her toy; as the handler kicks a toy to her, she attempts to bite their ankle instead of the toy itself. Additionally, Lucky Lady is reported to still kennel fight. 08/05/26: Lucky Lady is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is leashed while distracted with a treat and is taken to the street for her walk. Outside she is aloof generally and passes people on the street without issue, when seeing dogs Lady will pull moderately toward them but otherwise does not react further. She walks for a while and relieves herself, when seeing people she will move away from them and shows minimal interest in passing people. After a while she is brought back inside, when returning to kennel she pulls hard toward the kennels she passes before being muscled into kennel and ending the interaction. 7/30/26: Lucky Lady is reported to have intense kennel reactivity. 7/27/26: Lucky Lady is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and slightly widened eyes. As handler goes to leash, she would attempt to push past the handler but she is then easily leashed. Once removed from her kennel, she would become tense as she would fixate on the neighboring kennels while exiting the room. Lucky is then taken out for a street walk, where she has a mild pull forward. She would relieve herself with no issue and continue the walk. Lucky Lady would then spot a dog and become tense with her hackles raised, she would begin to fixate but is briefly distracted using squeakers and treats. Handler has to pull her away to break her focus. Shortly, she is brought back inside for her assessment - once completed she is returned to her kennel presenting the previous behaviors mentioned.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to resource guarding we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking and growling towards cats we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs we recommend a single pet home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Lucky's previous owner states that she will become tense, hover, growl, hard bark, snap and attempt to bite. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Lucky's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Lucky's previous owner states that she will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Lucky's previous owner states that she will lunge when held/restrained or pushed off furniture. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach DOG to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Lucky's previous owner states that she will lunge when startled. It is important to move slowly with Lucky, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Lucky's previous owner states that she will hard bark and lunge at strangers, cats, small animals, and dogs. While in care, Lucky has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room and will fixate on dogs while on the street. She will have a tense body and raised hackles. Lucky will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
