Animal Profile

Dionysus

Hello, my name is Dionysus. My animal id is #223918. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/5/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Dionysus is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He has been observed to be highly kennel reactive especially when reentering the kennel room. Dionysus has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room while snapping at them. After returning to kennel Dionysus spins and then snaps at the handler. While in the yard Dionysus has also been observed to fixate on other dogs. While out with handlers Dionysus has been observed to engage with toys and be receptive to treats. Medically Dionysus is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dionysus so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Dionysus has been observed to jump up onto handlers often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Dionysus has been observed to baulk when returning to kennel. Handler needed to use a sling to return him to kennel. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Dionysus would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Dionysus has been observed to pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room and snap in their direction. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats or squeakie sounds. In the yard Dionysus has been observed to fixate on other dogs. Dionysus will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
