Mack
Hello, my name is Mack. My animal id is #250931. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/13/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Mack has been placed on the at risk list for medical reasons. He has a painful left front leg and is reluctant to place weight on it. We have done preliminary diagnostic tests, but they have been inconclusive. Behaviorally, Mack is excitedable and tolerant but will communicate when uncomfortable during medical handling. Mack needs further investigation and treatments we are unable to provide in the care center.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to play and will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
My medical notes are...

It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (5):: 06/08/26: Mack was lying on his karunda bed as the handler approached. he was easily leashed and bounced out of his kennel. When inside the behaviour office, Mack was clipped to a drag leash and immediately shook off. He would sit in front of the handler and tao his front paws.. Mack would take treats gently. The handler attempted some polite exchange with Mack, but he was showing more interest in treats than toys. The handler played some up/down with him into a snuffle mat and Mack was able to automatically sit. Mack would continue to tap his front paws whilst waiting for treats and would jump up at the handler twice. Mack would solicit pets and lean into the handler. When the handler stropped for a consent check, Mack briefly froze, then would lean into the handler again. the handler started some hand targeting with Mack and he was able to push his nose into the handler's hand with ease. Mack started to take treats more roughly, so the handler played some more up/down before releashing him and safely returning Mack to kennel.
Summary (6):: 6/5/26: Mack is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken to the play yard for play group. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 6/4/26 (PG): Mack was at front of kennel when handler approached. He was easily leashed and taken to the play yard for a gate greet. As soon as Mack saw the other dog on the other side of the gate he started hard barking and lunging forward, he was still about 3 feet away from gate. Handler had a hard time pulling Mack away from the gate. His body was tense, tail was high and ears were pinned back and hackles were raised. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 5/23/26: Mack is at the front of kennel vocalizing when handler approaches kennel. He is leashed easily and walked excitedly around medical canine iso. The behavioral assessment was done in medical canine iso (Please see behavior assessment for more information). When returned to kennel, Mack allowed leashing and returned to the kennel with ease. 5/18/26: Mack is at the front of the kennel tapping his paws as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will walk on a loose leash through the Care Center hallway and will relieve himself in the hallway. He is brought to a yard and will sniff around and placed on a drag leash. He will lean into handler to solicit petting and will reengage after consent checks. After a while he is returned to kennel and secured safely. 04/22/26: Mack stands and comes to the front of his kennel with a loose body. He is easily leashed and walks without pulling outside. He is returned to kennel without issue. 4/21 (AM): Mack readily comes to the front of his kennel when he sees a handler. He begins hard barking, inching closer to the front of his kennel, nearly fully against the frosting. The handler offers him treats, but he does not take them. The handler bends to one knee and cracks the kennel door open to see Mack. The handler finds him hovering over his uneaten food tray, growling. The handler slowly leashes him, and he moves the tray further under him, body crouched low. He hard barks once when the lead is secured. Once the door is fully open, he readily exits and then urinates in the room. He is taken outside for his morning walk, where he continues to relieve himself. He does not react to loud trucks speeding by or a loud car that passes with a loud, grumbling, and popping exhaust. Once his kennel is clean, he returns without issue.
Summary (7):: 4/20 (PM): Mack approaches a handler with low tails wags and a soft squinty eyes when he sees them approach his kennel. He is easily leashed and taken outside for his evening walk. Mack explores scents, taking deep sniffs. He does this for several minutes in differing intervals before relieving himself. He maintains a soft body as he trots alongside the handler. Once his walk is complete, he returns to the kennel without issue. 04/19/26: Mack is sleeping on his kuranda bed as handler approaches. He comes forward and is leashed with ease, walking on a loose leash to the Canine Behavior Office. Mack is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He slowly approaches multiple handlers, sniffs them, and leans into petting. He begins to bounce around the room and will pick up his leash and shake it around. After his session, he is leashed with ease and returns to kennel safely. 4/17/26: Mack is standing in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame as he walks ahead of the handler. He would sniff around to explore and mark his territory. He is comfortable approaching the handler and would sniff treats that were offered but does not eat them. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 4/16/26: Mack is siting on his bed at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He remains siting on his bed with a tense body as the handler unlocks the door. He lowers his head as he turns it away when the handler presents their leash. He would dodge the leash and lower his head as the handler attempts to leash him. He is able to be slowly leashed when he tries to step forward and he is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he has a tense body as he approaches the handlers. He has no interest in treats and would accept pets near his ears due to them being itchy. He let's out a short growl when the handler pets his back. He then leans his head forward to receive ear scratches again. He is able to slowly return back to his kennel with no issues. 04/14/26: Mack is lying at the front of kennel as handler approaches. He lifts his head up and will grumble but allows handler to slowly leash him. Handler opens the kennel door wide and allows him space to slowly exit the kennel. Mack walks with a tense, trembling frame to the Canine Behavior Office. He is wary of handlers in the room and will turn his back to them while continuing to tremble. Mack relieves himself and then sits next to handler. He settles slightly and accepts very light, brief petting along his back and will look back up at handler when they discontinue contact. Due to his frame still being tense, handler only pets a few short times and discontinues contact. Handler slowly clips their lead and after his session, he is returned to kennel safely.
