Animal Profile

Babygirl

Hello, my name is Babygirl. My animal id is #230642. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/15/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot handle smell or mess.

Babygirl is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. A volunteer writes: Having been handed several big changes and asked to make do, Babygirl has tried enough new things to know that it's not really her style. She had a home but due to housing insecurity, was given to someone in April, and then eventually brought to us. Though finding her footing has proven to be a little more elusive than she anticipated, Babygirl has found some comfort in her den. Snuggled up and making only the rarest and requisite of appearances, Babygirl knows that what works for her isn't exactly the most outgoing. Though she wasn't at all interested in pets, she good naturedly popped her head out for some treats and we started building a friendship. We hope that you'll come in and offer Babygirl what she's been hoping to find this whole time - a forever home.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Previously lived with: 2 adults, 2 cats Behavior toward strangers: Actively avoids or retreats, Hisses, Growls. Behavior toward cats: Defensive, Growls, actively avoids or retreats. Bite or Scratch history: Yes, reported but not further explained. Litter box training: Yes, but noted to have litter box accidents likely after conflicts with other cats in the home for short term. Energy level/descriptors: Low energy level Other notes: This cat is generally fearful and withdrawn, often watching from afar and choosing to spend most of its time alone in the living room. It lived exclusively indoors and showed little to no interest in play, never engaging in interactive playtime. The cat preferred to scratch on vertical surfaces, rough rope, and carpet or fabric. While the previous owner appreciated the cat’s unique fur pattern, they also noted several behavior challenges. These included hiding in fear, occasional litter box accidents, nipping or swatting when pet for too long, playing roughly with claws and mouth, and a strong dislike of other cats. This cat would likely do best in a calm, quiet home with a patient and understanding adopter, ideally as the only pet.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/3/25 Vol. Resting in den out of sight. Did not move for sweet talk. Twitched slightly when a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up was dropped into den, but did not investigate. When the den cover was raised, was facing forward and looked around with dilated eyes, but remained frozen in place. Left a Feliway felt square. Had not eaten treats after >10 minutes. 8/6/25 Vol. Babygirl was resting inside den, facing away from opening. She did not show interest in treats or toys, remaining quiet and staying away from den opening. 8/8/25 Vol. Baby Girl was in her den. When I lifted the den cover to get s visual, she was found lying on her side, head up front, eyes only slightly dilated and body soft, ears neutral. Her eyes widened a bit but did not react to the tool and showed no interest in puréed treats or dry treats. 8/12/25 Vol. Hiding in her privacy den. Tried to give her some Squeeze Ups but she was not interested. Also no interest in playing with the cat dancer or the laser. Tried to lure her out with some tuna, but she never came out of her den. 8/13/25 Vol. Babygirl was resting inside den, with her head tucked down. She briefly looked up when offered treats on scratcher tool, then put her head back down and ignored further attempts to interact. 8/16/25 Vol. Baby Girl was in her den. I lifted the den cover to find her, like last week, facing forward, eyes neutral, body neutral, but she won’t be enticed out of the den.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Previous owner reported that Babygirl may nip or swat when pet for too long, plays roughly with claws and mouth, and has a strong dislike of other cats. It is possible that some of the observed behaviors were a result of redirected aggression from the stressful environment that came with Babygirl living with other cats.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to fearfulness and slightly declining behavior. No cats due to reports of her being defensive, growls, and actively avoids or retreats from other cats.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 07/20/25: Babygirl was lying down in loaf position with a neutral body and eyes. When reaching close to offer treats by hand, she slowly steps back and widens her eyes. She allows brief petting on the head and cheeks but tilts her ears to the side, blankly stares forward, and freezes. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 08/18/25: Babygirl's behavior has slightly declined since the previous evaluation. She was hiding in the den curled up with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes when removing the den cover. She sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and remains frozen when pet on the cheeks. When stroking her body, she quickly turns around and spits. When pet on the head, she hisses and pushes the tool away. After removing the tool at the end of the interaction, she begins growling. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Babygirl tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
