Animal Profile

Dobby

Hello, my name is Dobby. My animal id is #235688. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Dobby is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/15/25 FB61 Hunched in cubby, body and face tense with face and body tensed. He hisses, backs up and flattens his ears when offered treats and a catnip toy. I speak to him softly and return slow-blinks before ending the session. He is very nervous and he does not eat the treats or engage with the toy for the duration of time I'm in the room. Hopefully he checks them out later when he feels more safe. 9/19/25 FB79 Inside of his litterbox, Dobby sits with his eyes wide/dilated and hisses when i approach the cubby. He has no reaction when i slide in some treats on a tray and when i bring the pointer to his face for him to sniff he remains very still while allowing brief petting on his head and cheeks. 9/24/25 FB20 Dobby is sitting in cubby hunched, ears flat against his head. He sniffs tool and tolerates pets on his cheeks, adjusting to move when pet along his body. He is given a few treats, which he ignores. 9/25/25 FB79 On the top part of the kennel, Dobby sits with his paws tucked, his eyes wide and his ears forward. He has no reaction to the tray of treats that i slide in and watches as i bring the tool close. he sniffs and tolerates petting while one of his ears tilts but remains still and even started to slow blink. Sweet boy needs time. 9/28/25 Vol. Dobby was in his bed. He hissed at me when I opened the door, and backed up with his hind feet against the rear wall. His ears were flat against his head. I spoke softly to him and he began to grumble. He jumped up onto the ledge. I tried petting him with the scratcher tool and he accepted it. He seemed to be tense, remaining at the back of the ledge. I stopped petting him and gave him some toys and more treats. I ended the interaction. When I checked up on him later, he was still on the ledge, but his ears were in their upright position and he seemed to be more relaxed. 10/2/25 FB79 Inside of the cubby, Dobby is perched with his paws tucked under, forward ears and wide eyes when i open the cubby door but his ears flatten to his head when i speak and offer some treats. He has no interest in any treats but remains still/tolerant when i bring my hand in for him to sniff. He allowed a pet on his head and then stands slowly and enters the main part of his kennel jumping to the top and perching once again with his paws tucked. 10/5/25 Vol. Dobby was in the main compartment of his kennel. When he saw me, he hissed a few times and jumped up onto the ledge. His ears were so flat against his head that they were not even visible. He did not eat the treats I gave to him. He allowed me to pet him with the scratcher tool, watching it as I stroked him, but not leaning in or seeming to want it. I ended the interaction. He stayed at the back of the ledge, looking fearful, although his ears moved back to the upright position. 10/10/25 FB79 At the front of the cubby, Dobby sits with a neutral body, her tail wrapped and her ears forward. He hisses loudly as his ears flatten GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information. Dobby is reported to urinate and defecate just outside of the litterbox daily. In his previous home he shared two, uncovered, litterboxes with three other cats. He used scented, non-clumping, litter. His previous family changed the entire box, moved the box to a quieter location (under the kitchen table), and placed weewee pads by the litterbox. Dobby is additionally reported to spray. As Dobby has been adjusting to the shelter, he has been using the litterbox appropriately for the most part, aside from six accidents where he eliminated on linens and outside the box. There is the potential that in his previous home, Dobby was stressed out by the three cats he lived with, and may have been more hesitant to use the litterboxes due to this increased stress and sharing. Additionally, there were only two litterboxes with scented litter. It is generally recommended that there is one litterbox per cat plus one, and that litter is unscented.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: While Dobby is noted to; be tolerant, curious, friendly, outgoing, and playful around children - and it takes him less then two weeks to get to know children, the behavior team feels that due to the behavior presented in shelter at this time, Dobby may do best going to an adult-only home to allow him to decompress fully. He has previously lived with one 12-year-old child, and may be fine in a home with older children that are respectfully and capable of giving a fearful cat plenty of time and space.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/11/25 Dobby was hunched in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense and tail wrapped around feet. Dobby made eye contact when spoken to and he hissed as the kennel door opened. Dobby tolerated petting along his head and body while backing away, flattening his ears in an airplane position and hissing again. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 10/11/25 Upon re-eval, Dobby continues to display fearful and tense behavior and body language. On approach, he is sitting in his litter box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated - he tenses more and ears tilt to the side as the cubby door is opened and the assessor offers the scratcher tool out. He is tolerant of pets along his head and body, leaning slightly into cheek pets with the tool and stretching his chin out for chin pets. He remains tense and relatively frozen throughout the interaction however. Pick up is not attempted. Dobby tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
