In the prior home he is noted by his owners to be social, affectionate, Very active and Playful. Since arriving at the care center, Rocket has displayed significant fear and stress. He has been observed hiding behind and attempting to crawl under his Kuranda bed, refusing to move when approached, and remaining at the back of his kennel with a tense body and whale eyes. During interactions, he has been unable to engage with handlers and has demonstrated a high level of fear. Rocket would benefit from a New Hope placement that can provide a quiet, low-stress environment, allow for decompression, and support him through gradual confidence-building and positive reinforcement. Given his bite history and current fearful presentation, placement with an experienced adopter or foster through one of our rescue partners capable of managing fearful behavior is recommended.

Bite history:: The owner stated that their 6-year-old child and a 7-year-old neighborhood friend (the victim) were playing in the front yard with water hoses, sprinklers, and bottles of water. Rocket was observing the children from behind the home’s enclosed gate. After they finished playing, the children decided to go inside to relax. The owner’s child opened the front gate, followed by the other child (the victim). When the gate opened, Rocket ran towards the children, jumping up on them excitedly. When Rocket jumped a second time, he jumped only on the victim, biting Victim left arm and breaking skin, causing the victim to bleed. The bite was a quick release, and after biting, Rocket ran back into the house. The owner does not know if the child sought medical attention.

In the prior home he is noted by his owners to be social, affectionate, Very active and Playful. Since arriving at the care center, Rocket has displayed significant fear and stress. Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Rocket is noted to have Destructive tendencies (furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc.) Providing consistent structure, supervision, and appropriate enrichment outlets can help reduce destructive patterns. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Rocket is noted to to jump up often or non-stop. Training should focus on reinforcing calm greeting behaviors and teaching appropriate alternatives to jumping. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Fearful: Rocket is noted to become fearful of loud noises (storms/thunder, fireworks, arguments, etc.), noted to be fearful when startled. Supporting Rocket with a calm, predictable environment and gradual exposure to triggers may help build confidence and reduce fear. Please see the handout on decompression period. Separation anxiety: Rocket is noted to become anxious when left alone. A structured plan that includes gradual independence training, enrichment, and predictable routines will be important to support him. Please see the handout on Separation anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Rocket's previous owner states that he will growl and hard bark towards strangers and moving objects such as skateboards. Rocket will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than people and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Rocket is noted to pulls hard on leash.Consistent leash training, appropriate equipment, and reinforcement of loose-leash walking behaviors will help improve control and create a safer walking experience. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
