Animal Profile

Fidget Widget

Hello, my name is Fidget Widget. My animal id is #230575. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/27/2025.

Fidget Widget is at risk due to the behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During intake he was social with staff, jumping up on handlers with a soft, loose, body and a wagging tail. He has remained social throughout his stay; however, he has also been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. He has been noted to quickly escalate to mounting and fixating on handlers, without being able to be redirected. Fidget Widget is not very receptive or engaged during training sessions due to the busy environment finding motivation and keeping his engagement has been very difficult. Recent reports have noted him to be painting his kennel in feces and banging the transfer door. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I can go home today! I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary:: 7/18/25- Fidget widget gate greets the other dog with a loose and wiggly body, she engages and sniffs through the gate. She disengages and reengages on her own, returning being loose and wiggly.

Summary (3):: 8/20/25 (Trainer Note): Fidget Widget is laying down in the middle of his kennel with a neutral body. He is not eating the meds offered to him, but does take liver treats. He is removed from the kennel and taken to the street for a relief walk. He pulls very hard and is all over the place on his walk. He jumps up a couple times and begins to nibble and mouth handlers treat pouch. He is straight armed. He shakes off a couple times throughout his walk, he continues pulling very hard, and will rarely check in unprompted. He is then taken to the PAC interaction room for a training session. He is highly aroused, scrambling all over the place, jumping and mouthing handlers treat pouch, and head whipping when pet. He mounts handlers leg twice throughout interaction. Handler has to use the leash to remove him. Handler waits and begins rewarding clam behavior. Once Fidget is no longer past arousal threshold, handler introduces "Down" training. He is engaged and receptive for the most part, successfully completing the cue multiple times with a lure. He is returned to his kennel without issue and given in kennel enrichment. 08/20/25: Fidget Widget is taken for a street walk, where he would pull hard ahead of the handler and would continually grab different items on the sidewalk to chew on. Anytime he grabbed one of the items, a treat is tossed and he is easily redirected. While walking back towards the shelter, as handler tried to open the front gate Fidget would attempt to mount the handler and he’s shortly straight armed away. He’s kept on a short and tight leash while returning back into the hallway. As handler waits in the hallway for his kennel to be finished, Fidget would attempt to mount again, which he’s also then straight armed again. Fidget would then attempt to chew the bottom of the handlers boot, as they went to pull him off he then tried to chew on the handlers laces. He’s then put back on a short leash & returned to his kennel with no further issue.

Summary (4):: 08/16/25: Fidget Widget is laying down toward back of kennel as handler approaches. As handler begins to unlock door, Fidget Widget stands and approaches door with wiggly body. Fidget Widget is easily leashed and pulls with inconsistent moderate pressure to play-yard. Upon passing a play-yard Fidget quickly approaches gate with loose body, attempting to sniff and investigate. Leash pressure is used to redirect Fidget Widget to next play-pen. Fidget Widget is jumping intermittently while handler is attempting to switch to a clip on drag leash, handler is able to clip the drag-line on second attempt. Once lose in play-pen Fidget pounces around exuberant, mild zoomies and again attempts to greet the SMB occupying the neighboring pen. Fidget is loose, wiggly bodied and standing on hind-leg attempting to see over the visual blocker to the next yard, barks twice exuberantly and is able to be re-directed with squeaker sounds. Handler throws a variety of toys, Fidget Widget chases after balls and picks up, but does not bring back to handler. Fidget Widget understands sit commands consistently and takes treats dropped on floor. Fidget Widget attempts to mount handler's leg on several separate attempts. Fidget Widget in not directed off with verbal interruption, 'knee blocking' helps to stop Fidget Widget to grab hold, treats are mostly effective to get Fidget Widget to drop into a sit, and in one instance handler pushes Fidget Widget off. Fidget Widget recovers well and resumes engaging with variety of toys, he seems to mostly in engage with balls being tossed. When attempting to re-leash Fidget Widget he head whips twice, stands on hind-legs but is able to be leashed and taken off drag-line with on 3rd attempt. Fidget Widget re-enters MACC and kennel safely.

Summary (5):: 08/20/25: Fidget Widget is taken for a street walk, where he would pull hard ahead of the handler and would continually grab different items on the sidewalk to chew on. 8/15/25: Fidget Widget is reported to become very excited and will mount the handlers. He is able to settle with treats. 8/12/25 (Trainer Note): Fidget Widget is laying down in the middle of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. Several types of treats, including high value items, were offered through the kennel bars but he was uninterested in them all. The only thing he ate was the spray cheese so trainer attempted to utilize that during his training session. He pulls very hard and is scrambling all over the place while occasionally pouncing into a play bow. In the yard he is kept on leash at first as he is past arousal threshold and is zooming all over the place. Handler puts some cheese on the bench and he licks it briefly but is no longer interested in it. Every time handler offers it to him he quickly jumps back and gets into a bow position. Handler puts it down on the bench and he knocks it over as he jumps on the fence, after knocking it over, he pounces on top of it and attempts to bite and paw at it. As handler attempts to put him on a drag leash he begins to head whip and attempts to mouth handlers wrist but does not make contact. He sits down with his back up against the fence and handler lets go of the drag leash. He immediately takes off, his butt almost touching the floor, he has 'clown face, and he gets the zoomies around the pen, slamming his body into the fence with a lot of intensity. He pauses, shakes off, and he is heavily panting and wobbles briefly. Handler attempts to toss two plush toys which he briefly chases after and bows over but he is uninterested in engaged further with them. He remains highly uninterested in treats, handler, and toys, and he is overall way past arousal threshold and aloof, training was unsuccessful. It is very challenging finding something of value to Fidget Widget. Handler returns him to his kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 8/6/25 (Trainer Note): Fidget Widget is laying down at the front of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is leashed and removed from kennel to be taken for a street walk first. He is not interested in the treats offered. He pulls hard and has a loose body with dilated pupils. When pet he leans in and curves his body while wiggling, he begins to mouth handlers hand. He is taken to the PAC interaction room for a training session. However, Fidget Widget is past threshold and he does not engage or is receptive to training. He is pacing all around the room, jumping up on the bench, heavily panting, pupils still very dilated, and head whipping to mouth handler. He is kept on leash and is unreceptive to the use of different high value treats such as deli meat and chicken. Handler attempts to use toys as motivation but he quickly loses interest after shaking them briefly. Fidget Widget is returned to his kennel. 8/6/25: It is reported that Fidget is banging on the transfer door. 07/31/25: Fidget Widget is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but does not accept them, he is leashed and quickly exits kennel and walks to the street with handler. Fidget pulls moderately while walking and stops to use the bathroom while outside. When passing people Fidget will attempt to pull toward them while pulling hard. He is difficult to redirect using treats. After walking for a bit he is brought back to the care center and to the assessment room for his assessment, once complete he is re-leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 07/30/25: As the handler had Fidget Widget in the yard, after sitting on the bench in the play yard, the handler decided to get up to start heading inside. Fidget then started jumping on the handler and began to start mounting the handler and would fixate on the handler's leg. As he was first pulled off, he would continue to attempt to mount the handler. He's then straight-armed and muscled back towards his kennel. 7/29/25- ACS reported that Fidget Widget was mounting them and would fixate on them. Handler pulled him off but he kept trying to mount. Another ACS had to come assist the other handler. 7/24/25: It is reported that Fidget Widget is finger painting the kennel with feces. 7/20/25: It was noted on the whiteboard that Fidget Widget is mounting handlers. 07/10/25: Fidget Widget is loose, wiggly bodied at front of kennel. Fidget sniffs treats but does not take any. tries licking the hand of handler while unclipping and reclipping lock to kennel. Fidget Widget is easily leashed and is "squirmy" when being picked up but allows so easily. On walk to sidewalk Fidget is pulling with light pressure. Fidget shows visual interest at other dogs, is loose bodied and checks in with handler during walk. Treats are offered, Fidget again sniffs and does not take any. Fidget chases pigeons in his path with loose wiggly body. Once re-entering MACC Fidget is easily lifted into his top kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Fidget Widget so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control and poor bite inhibition we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Potential challenges comments:: Social Hyperarousal/ Basic Manners/ Mouthiness: Fidget Widget quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up, mouthing, and mounting them. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Fidget Widget to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. DOG should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Fidget Widget. Please see handout on Arousal, Basic Manners, and Mouthiness.
