Rock
Hello, my name is Rock. My animal id is #172701. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/29/2023, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Rock is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. He at times is easily made fearful or become startled. He has begun to develop 'stranger danger' type reactivity toward select people. Medically, he has osteoarthritis.

Level 3 Behavior Rating: Summary: This dog will need to go to a home with experienced adopters, and we suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and we strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, we recommend consultation with a qualified, force-free, reward-based trainer in the future home. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but may be seen at a greater frequency and higher intensity. Please check here for updated adoption hours. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Rock may take time to warm up to new people or places. He has made many friends with caretakers here, though has some apparent stranger danger and may lunge, hard bark, or growl at select novel strangers. He would benefit from an experienced, adult only home with only adults. A staff member writes: Rock has made strides in being more confident and comfortable here in the shelter. He came to us as a scared and timid dog and is now a calm and confident pup. He is slowly becoming a volunteer and staff favorite as we learn more about his goofy and fun personality. He enjoys pets and will lean his entire body weight against you to get top tier cuddles and pets from staff and volunteers alike. He enjoys playing with toys and running around in the backyard. He is a gorgeous dog inside and out! He cant wait to meet you here at Manhattan Animal Care Centers! A volunteer writes: What a lovely guy is Rock! He started out a bit shy but has really blossomed. The other day I spent time with Rock in the backyard. He is just as charming as can be.

When other dogs came out, he would follow them for a moment along the fence with a loose body and tail up. He would go back to a toy after a few moments. He allowed handler to pet his side and flanks along with his head while playing with a toy. When another dog came into a neighboring pen, he ignored but when the other dog started playing with a squeaker toy he would want to play with their toy. Handler squeaked another toy and got Rock's attention. He was easily releashed and was returned to his kennel without issue.

When handler scratches his back, he head flips towards handler and handler stops. When an unknown handler walks by, he lunges and hard barks at them until they are out of sight. In his kennel, the same unknown handler passes by and Rock growls and muzzle punches the kennel bars. 8/10/23: Rock is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body, barking. He is easily leashed and taken out to the yard where he allows petting from handler. He approaches another dog at the fence and begins play bowing. ENERGY LEVEL:: HIGH
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN: Due to fearfulness and anxiety we recommend a home with only adults.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: FEARFUL/ANXIETY: Rock demonstrates high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety within the care center. This has lead to him flailing, panicking, and otherwise appearing shut down in select situations. With time he has opened up more, appearing soft, social, and more readily walking or approaching new people or places. There has been one instance where Rock lunged towards a person during a walk. See handouts: Decompression Period, Fear and Defensive Aggression, Generalized Anxiety.
