Animal Profile

Cappuccino

Hello, my name is Cappuccino. My animal id is #246650. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Cappuccino is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Cappuccino shows arousal concerns during handling including leash biting, jumping on handlers, reported lunging. He also shows dog reactivity on leash, barking and lunging at dogs even at a distance and becoming fixated when passing them. Cappuccino readily engages with toys and enrichment and is able to refocus onto treats or activities when given appropriate outlets but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Cappuccino is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

He is escorted to the live room for enrichment. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on him. Cappuccino immediately engages with squeaky toys, rotating between two toys by gripping one and releasing the other repeatedly. Handler tosses a treat onto the snuffle mat, which briefly redirects him. The handler will encourage him to keep moving in order to create some distance. Once they are far away enough, Cappuccino will disengage from the dogs but will then jump up onto the handler and becomes slightly mouthy. The handler will then try to lure him away with a treat but he will continue to jump. Once they remove him with the leash, he will begin to chase some pigeons. Throughout the walk, Cappuccino will begin to jump onto the handler again but is able to be refocused onto sniffing again with ease. Once close to the Care Center again, Cappuccino will begin to fixate on a dog that is in a play yard so the handler will maintain a large distance between them. Cappuccino in the building will bark at dogs a large distance away but is briefly able to be refocused on a treat scatter. He is then returned to his kennel where he will pull towards other kennels. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Anxiety/Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal: Cappuccino is noted to jump on handlers often and display a flushed face , heavy panting, and has difficulty settling. Training should prioritize reinforcing calm behaviors, structured engagement, and regular breaks to prevent overstimulation. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety/ Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the care care Cappuccino is noted to become reactive towards other dogs and will volcaize and lunge and bark. Training should focus on increasing distance from dog triggers, building handler focus, and gradually desensitizing him to other dogs in controlled settings. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting: Cappuccino is noted ot mildy bite on the leash.Reinforcing alternative focus behaviors and rewarding calm engagement can help reduce leash-biting. Please the handout Leash-biting. Strength/leash pulling: Cappuccino is noted to hard pull while on the leash.Loose-leash walking practice, rewarding slack in the leash, and supportive walking equipment can help improve control and safety. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
