Summary:: Due to hard barking and baring teeth towards handlers Granola is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 12/30/24: (KSV) Granola is laying down in his kennel. New handler approaches and removes the kennel blocker. Handler removed a piece of chicken from package and called Granola forward. He stood up and slowly came forward half way, took a second, and then came forward completely. He gently took the piece of chicken watching the handler closely. Handler offered him another small piece and Granola accepted wagging his tail this time. When handler went to pull out a third piece Granola growled and showed his teeth briefly. When he stopped handler showed him the piece of chicken and asked for him to sit which he did and handler rewarded the sit with the chicken. Once he was done eating it handler repeated the same routine and took a photo of him as well while sitting. When handler finished Granola was standing in the front of the kennel loose body. When kennel blocker was being placed back up Granola growled, showed teeth, and jumped up on the kennel door briefly. Handler called him to the side panel of his kennel, gave him the last piece of chicken, and ended the interaction while Granola was busy eating. 12/21/24: Granola is laying in his kennel upon approach. He is offered high value treats as handler opens the kennel door and presents the leash. He eats the ham but once done he shows teeth then retreats and barks, lifting his front paws. He is offered ham again and he comes forward and eat it but then shows teeth and barks while retreating. A second handler feeds him the ham and the main handler secures the leash. He shows teeth but the door is opened wide to allow him to come out. However, he remains at the back of the kennel, barking and showing teeth. The kennel door is closed and hook and ham are used to remove the leash. 12/20/24: Granola is laying at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He is coaxed forward using chicken and once in the front of the kennel handler attempts to leash. He dodges the leash a few times before being leashed. Once leashed handler opens the door for Granola but he does not move forward. Handler tosses more chicken outside and inside the kennel for him. He accepts the treats in kennel but after he eats them he looks up baring teeth and growling intensely at handler. Handler closes the kennel door and Granola continues to bare teeth growling deeply. When attempting to remove the leash from him using a hook he continues to growl and hard barks a few times. Once the leash is removed he stops baring teeth and begins staring at handler, interaction is ended shortly after.
Summary (7):: 12/19/24: Granola is laying at the back of his kennel as handlers approach. He is coaxed forward using ham and other treats, and while distracted by one handler is leashed by the second. Once leashed he is walked out to the yard and begins walking around the perimeter. Due to a large amount of dogs in the yards as well as one of these dogs being highly reactive, handler decides to instead walk Granola in the driveway where it is less busy. Granola walks with handler out to the driveway and does not pull while walking. When spotting other dogs he will briefly stop and look at them but looses interest after a bit. He does not accept treats tossed to him, but will stop and sniff around the driveway. He is walked for a while more before being brought back inside, he allows clipping and is returned to kennel without issue. 12/18/24: Granola is laying at the back of his kennel as handlers approach. He is leashed while distracted with chicken and taken to the yard for his walk. During his walk, Granola pulls slightly and walks almost immediately to the back of the play yard and begins sniffing and looking out the back gate. He pushes his nose against the gate and sits next to it for a while, but is coaxed away by chicken and continues walking. He walks for a while more and doesn't react to stimuli such as other dogs and people. He is then clipped and brought back to kennel. Due to his kennel not being finished cleaning, handlers wait outside the room with Granola offering distractions such as treats and toys, he ignores these and begins barking at staff passing in the halls and once returned to kennel, handler notices the leash has tangled on his head cones straps. Handlers attempt to remove the leash but Granola head whips and hard barks at handlers. He is left in kennel with the leash. 12/17/24: Granola is at the front of the kennel hard barking when handlers approach. Handlers offer treats and he is not receptive. Handler offers chicken and Granola takes it with a soft mouth. Handler presents the leash and Granola periodically hard barks and bares teeth at the handlers. Granola is easily leashed using chicken and is taken to the yard. When the handler attempts to clip leash, Granola turns and barks at them. He is returned to kennel and the handler uses the hook to remove the

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Granola so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to hard barking and baring teeth we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Granola has been observed to hard bark and bare teeth towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Granola, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
