Mime
Hello, my name is Mime. My animal id is #241511. I am a female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/16/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMime is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Mime has shown a concerning level of reactivity to other dogs while in her crate. She lunges, hard barks, and muzzle punches the bars as the pass her crate. Attempts to cover her to reduce visual stimuli has been unsuccessful due to her shredding the covers. Mime recently broke out of her crate and initiated an altercation with another dog that was being placed into its kennel. She did bite the other dog multiple times along their body, but the bites did not break skin or draw blood. In kennel, she will pant heavily and vocalize during high-traffic times of the day - cleanings, feeding, walking times, etc, Medically, Mime is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Mime was surrendered due to moving to a new home that does not allow pets. Her previous family described her as a social and affectionate dog who enjoys spending most of her time with people or in the kitchen. She is used to going to the groomers, is known to be nervous/have a tense body while getting in or being in the car, and is recorded to pull very hard on walks: 3-4 times a day and would last roughly 10 minutes each. In care, Mime has been relatively social with handlers, but becomes highly reactive to other dogs when they pass her crate/kennel. She has escalated to initiating an altercation with another do,g which did result in multiple bites, but the bites did not break skin or draw blood. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Mime to be placed in an adult-only home where she can be the only dog through a New Hope Rescue partner. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am playful and cute! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: According to Mime's previous owner(s), Mime is reported to be friendly, outgoing and tolerant with resident dogs. Previously lived with 2 dogs. With unfamiliar dogs on leash, she is tolerant, friendly & outgoing. With unfamiliar dogs off leash friendly, outgoing & playful. 11/17/25 Mime is introduced to a male helper dog while off leash at the care center. Mime approaches the gate with a soft body and wagging tail appearing interested in the male dog. Mime enters the male dogs pen and they sniff each other, remaining soft in frame. They disengage, separating from one another to explore the pen. Mime ignores the male dog for the remainder of the time. Mime is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (7):: 12/15 (PM): Two medical staff members were walking to place a dog into its designated kennel. Mime broke out of her crate and charged towards the dog, biting the other dog anywhere she could make contact - back, along the side, legs, flanks. At one point, she jumps onto the other dog's back, still biting. The handlers make attempts to separate both dogs and press the alarm for more assistance. Mime pauses when she sees one of the handlers run to press the alarm, but then goes back to the other dog. One of the medical handlers attempts to grab Mime and is finally able to catch her collar and pulls her over to a corner in the room while the other handler secures the other dog in its kennel. Two handlers race over to assist, and one leashes Mime, bringing her into the empty behavior office. Mime is then moved to a kennel in a different room while the other dog is taken back to medical to assess for any injuries. The bites did not break skin or draw blood. Several minutes later, a handler gives her enrichment and a second checks on in her new kennel, but Mime is either panting heavily or wailing, while bouncing in place on her front paws, ignoring her enrichment. 12/15: Mime continues to react to other dogs as they pass her crate, triggering her neighbors in the room. 12/3: (1) Multiple times throughout the day, as a handler is walking in and out of the behavior office during handler assessments, Mime is seen hard barking, muzzle punching the crate bars, and lunging when other dogs pass her crate. (2) Mime is seen gator rolling and thrashing while on lead as a handler is walking her out of the room for a walk. She did pause when seeing another handler and dog across the room, but then resumes thrashing.

A period of decompression is recommended to allow her to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Mime to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior she presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Other,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: When given valuable items such as food, toys, or treats (bones, rawhides, etc.), will become tense or hovers over them. When Mime becomes tense or hovers over valuable items, use trade-up games and positive reinforcement to teach her that giving up items leads to better rewards. Avoid confrontation and work gradually to build trust. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Mime jumps up often or non-stop in the prior home. Mime jumps up often. Teach a default sit and reward calm greetings. Consistent reinforcement and ignoring jumping will help reduce this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:Fearful of loud noises (storms/thunder, fireworks, arguments, etc.). Mime is noted to become fearful of being startled or when her collar is grabbed.Mime fears loud noises and sudden handling. Use desensitization and counter-conditioning for noise sensitivity and handling. Pair calm interactions with treats and avoid grabbing her collar abruptly. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (dog): Mime intiated and altercation with another dog after she broke out of her crate. She did bite the other dog, but the bites did not break skin or draw blood. Anxiety: Mime is noted to have general anxiety (paces, whines, unable to settle).Provide structured routines, calming enrichment, and teach relaxation cues. Short, positive sessions will help reduce overall anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Mime is noted when Strangers approach them or family members they will lunge. Use controlled setups with distance, rewarding calm behavior, and gradually decrease distance as she improves. Avoid punishment and focus on positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Other: Mime was bitten by another animal on 7/9/2025 during play fighting with a smaller dog it lived with; Mime did not cry or show distress and did not require veterinary care.
