Animal Profile

Fluff Fluff

Hello, my name is Fluff Fluff. My animal id is #216401. I am a desexed male tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 5 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/2/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Fluff Fluff is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 16.7 lbs

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/5/25 FB32 An hour after the behavior evaluation, the assessor began cleaning and setting up the adjacent kennel in order to give Fluff Fluff more space. He was growling upon approach and would hiss and lunge to swat at the front door repeatedly when the assessor attempted to pull the den forward and put the front door back on. 5/8/25 ACFR Hiding in den. Hisses and growls upon approach and during cleaning and feeding. Swats at door when reaching close. High FAS. 5/10/25 Vol. Facing forward when approached & comes closer to the front. Growls, hisses & swats the door (without striking through bars) when the shoreline is lifted and if you're taking the carabiner off & trying to lift the latch of the kennel door that he's not in. Tossed treats through the empty kennel. Also offered squeeze-up on the scratcher tool. He came to the portal door, looked at it and ignored the squeeze up. I left a felt square that was sprayed with the calming spray inside the kennel. 5/11/25 Vol. In kennel behind Shoreline cover. Lunged and growled when I raised it a bit to peek and low growled when I sat in front. Poked head through the portal to see what I was doing, continuing to growl. Came forward to sniff treats tossed in around the Shoreline cover, but didn't eat. Used the tool to push medicine and tuna tray back towards the portal and he lunged towards it without actually swatting, then pulled back to the other side. Sniffed a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up pushed through the bars, but didn't eat any. Leaned out the portal again to sniff a catnip toy. Very curious, but also nearly continuously growling. Did not appear to have eaten any of the tuna/gaba.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to fearfulness and uncomfortable with pick up. Reported to be shy and timid with children. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 05/05/25: Fluff Fluff is a shy, sweet, timid cat. He was lying down in the den with his front limbs extended and his head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. He curiously sniffs treats offered by hand, then leans back when petting his head. He leans in for cheek rubs, but tenses up when stroking his body and applying gentle upward pressure on his side and chest. When the assessor pulls their hand away, he swats their hand and hisses, and then begins to growl. 05/12/25: Fluff Fluff is a shy, timid, and independent cat whose behavior has deteriorated during the past week in the shelter since his previous evaluation. He was hiding in the den crouched down with his head poking out of the den side door upon approach. When spoken to and opening the door, he harshly hisses and steps back to completely hide in the den. When removing the den cover, his hisses and swats at the front door with his eyes wide and ears flattened. He sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool and placed in front of him, then he lip licks. When reaching close to pet him, Fluff Fluff curiously sniffs the tool, then swats and hisses at it. After reaching closer and petting his body, Fluff Fluff bites and swats at the tool, growls, and lip licks. When placing the den cover back on, he swats at the den front door. Fluff Fluff is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Fluff Fluff also has a bite/scratch history in which he was reported to be rough and randomly come up and bite the owners or become aggressive when hungry, despite also being reported as friendly and affectionate. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
