ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/5/26 FB09 Jasper was lying curled up in his den with wide, dilated eyes when the door opened. He shifted when the handler offered him treats on the click stick, staring at the stick with wide eyes. He began hissing and low growling, so the interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 6/6/26 FB09 Jasper was lying in his litter box with dilated eyes and flattened ears. When the handler offered him treats on the click stick, he began licking up the treats, eyes remaining dilated but returning slow blinks. His eyes softened slightly as he accepted brief pets on the head with the click stick but they soon dilated again as he started to slowly back up. 6/13/26 FB09 Jasper was crouched in the back of his kennel and began low growling when the kennel door opened. His ears were lowered and his eyes dilated as he cautiously leaned in to lick the treats offered to him. He backed away when attempting to pet with click stick and continued low growling. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 6/20/26 FB73 Jasper is laying in his den, poking his head out of the portal exit and growling when the handler approaches and opens the kennel door. He is offered a squeeze up using a scratcher tool, and he hisses at it before realizing what it is and quickly eating all of it. More squeeze up is offered, and he continues to eat it. Later in the day the handler is passing out cardboard scratchers and as they are attaching it to his kennel door, he leans his head out, hissing and spitting before low growling. Handler continues to slowly place on the scratcher and ends the interaction. 6/22/26 FB73 Jasper is laying in his litter box as the handler approaches. When attempting to open the kennel door, Jasper quickly sits up, hissing, spitting, and lunging. Interaction is ended to reduce stress. 7/17/26 FB09 Jasper poked his head through the portal door of his double kennel and watched the handler carefully with dilated eyes. He let out a hiss before slowly approaching once he saw the handler holding out treats for him. He began licking up the treats while occasionally looking up cautiously, still hesitant to make direct contact with the handler. 7/19/26 FB09 Jasper was sitting in his kennel with dilated eyes and softly meowed for treats. Once the handler opened the door, he hissed before cautiously coming forward to sniff the treats held out for him. He then began eagerly licking them up while returning slow blinks with the handler. 7/22/26 FB73 Jasper is at the front of the kennel, staying there much more often during my interactions with him. He hissed once upon approach but stopped with soft talk and once he realized I was offering a squeeze up. He is able to be fed it by hand with a slow approach and eats all of it, a significant improvement from earlier in his stay at the shelter. GAN

Potential challenges comments:: Jasper has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Please note Jasper also has bladder stones and Hematuria.

Recommendations comments:: Jasper is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and avoids human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Jasper tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/31/26 Jasper was lying in his den with dilated eyes and forward ears, his tail curled close to his body. When offering him treats, he remained stiff, only keeping his eyes on the handler. When transitioning to pet him using the click stick, he hissed then bit the stick, adjusting his position away from it. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 6/29/26 Jasper is laying in his den, poking his head out of the portal exit with dilated pupils and his ears back as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he begins low growling. He is spoken to softly and the assessor slowly offers him a squeeze up using the scratcher tool. He sniffs at the air for a few seconds before quickly beginning to eat it. When petting is attempted, he swats hard at the tool and hisses again. As the assessor closes the door to end the interaction, Jasper leans his head out of the den to spit and hiss once more. Jasper is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
