Animal Profile

Udon

Hello, my name is Udon . My animal id is #265083. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 9/12/2026.

Udon is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is a sweet, young adult cat with a severe upper respiratory infection. He is not eating and needs supportive care in a veterinary clinic in order to recover. Behaviorally, Udon is caustious to accept pets due to FAS but he will tolerate handling for medical treatments.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Udon is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Behaviorally, Udon is caustious to accept pets due to FAS but he will tolerate handling for medical treatments. A volunteer writes: Udon is a cute Tabby boy part of a large family of cats(fifteen to be more precise). Their owner lost their home and all the housemates had to come to the Manhattan Care Center. We do not know anything about Udon, his true temperament, his behavior with his friends or his owner...Nothing. At the care center, he is a shy soul, staying at the back of his cubby but more recently(see his video), accepting caresses, leaning slightly into pets and closing his eyes with gentle words. He even made biscuits for me and another volunteer. Something good is cooking here ad I hope that Udon will soon reveal what a good and sweet cat he truly is. Like his housemates(they all have been adopted!!), Udon needs to be discovered, adopted and join a new family for many years of shared happiness. Come and meet Udon very soon at the Manhattan Care Center! Update:Udon is really a very nice cat who has come a long way!He is not shy at all anymore but I knew he was getting there, slowly but surely. Udon has a big cold but his sweet nature and his love for attention and cuddles still drive him to seek all the love he can get!!!Udon needs your help now! He is sooo worth your attention! What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Udon was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/16/26 Vol. Udon was lying inside den, facing away from opening. His front paws were curled under his body. He did not respond when offered treats on scratcher tool, remaining quiet and out of sight. When den cover was briefly lifted, he looked up with partly dilated eyes and leaned his body away slightly. He did not return slow blinks. 9/18/26 Vol. Udon was inside the cubby behind the litter box with dilated pupils upon approach. A wet treat was placed in his tray, and the cubby door was closed. He immediately began eating. Udon stayed in the back of his cubby for the whole interaction eventually allowing light petting on the head by hand. 9/20/26 Vol. Sleeping in cubby behind litter box. Woke when approached and looked around with normal eyes. Returned some blinks. Ignored a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Sniffed my hand and allowed some head scratches, but remained tense. Lip-licked afterwards. 9/25/26 Vol. Curled in litter box. Put treat bowl on shelf by entry, he turned his head away. Approached through cubby door with hard treat on scratcher tool. Udon sat erect and as if trying to figure it out, tapped tool gently. Dropped treats and approached - Udon allowed head and chin scratches with tool, sitting still and waiting patiently for more when stopped. He lay down in litter box and allowed scratches with tool - making biscuits. Gave scratches and ended interaction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 12yrs old.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Udon appeared alert, nervous, and cautious during the assessment. He remained sitting upright behind the den with wide eyes and gave a low grumble when approached, indicating discomfort or uncertainty. He allowed petting with the scratcher tool, but remained completely still, suggesting he was tolerating the interaction rather than actively enjoying or seeking it. He stayed very aware of his surroundings and appeared wary of the environment. Udon seems to be experiencing significant stress or fear in the unfamiliar setting. His low grumbling and wide eyed, immobile posture are signs that he was uncomfortable and possibly using stillness as a coping strategy. The fact that he allowed gentle interaction is encouraging, but he would likely benefit from a quiet, low-stress environment, minimal pressure, and allowing him time to acclimate at his own pace. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
