Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history
Date of assessment:: 12/16/2024
Summary:: Barkington has been observed to be fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to baulk and thrash while on leash. When handlers have attempted to use a sling, he has been observed to headwhip towards them. Due to high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety, Barkington is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 12/18/24: Barkington is observed to have bright red blood on his muzzle. The blood is also observed to be on his paws and on the drain cover. No hard toys where in the kennel with him, and no obvious damage to the walls.
Summary (7):: 12/15/24: While Barkington was being brought in by two handlers. One with a kennel rope the other with a belly band, due to his pancaking and baulking. As he was being lifted down the hallway, handler holding belly band lightly and gently tapped Barkington towards his rear end to prompt him to move forward, as this has worked previously. He head whipped towards handlers hand but not contact was made. He was muscled into kennel. 12/15/24: Barkington is at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. He has a loose body and soft wagging tail. Barkington is easily leashed, then handler opens the door wide. Barkington cautiously steps out of the kennel, and slowly walks down the hallway. When there is any leash pressure Barkington baulks, treats and squeakie sounds are not able to coax his forward. In the play yard Barkington walks around with a low body. When attempting to return to the building, Barkington baulked at the top of the stairs. Barkington is not able to be coaxed using treats or squeakie sounds. When the second handler attempts to use a sling Barkington pulls back hard causing his paws to start bleeding. Another handler has to assist bringing Barkington back to kennel. Barkington continues to baulk the whole way back to kennel. 12/14/24: Barkington is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed and attempts to paw the leash off immediately, plopping down to the floor and pawing at his head. He is offered a multitude of treats ranging from chicken, cheese, ham, etc... and will accept them from handler softly but refuses to exit kennel. A second handler approaches to attempt to excite and encourage Barkington out of kennel, but he remains hesitant. He sticks his head a bit out of kennel but only briefly before going back inside and laying down. Squeaky toys are brought out to encourage him out of kennel but he continues to refuse. Finally he is given a kuranda bed to make walking out the kennel easier for him and he slowly waddles out of kennel. He stops while walking out the room briefly but continues forward and baulks when attempting to go to the yard. Handler turns and walks to the driveway, once in the driveway he accepts treats and hesitantly walks forward. After a while he begins to baulk and refuse to walk forward while whining, he is given a moment before he continues walking and is brought back to kennel. Once at the front of kennel Barkington begins to lay down and pancakes refusing to re-enter kennel. With the help of two other handlers he is coaxed inside and needs to be lifted into kennel upon returning.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Barkington so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and thrashing while on leash we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: During intake, Barkington displayed sensitivity around his neck and started thrashing on leash. Barkington has also been observed to headwhip towards handlers when they attempt to use a sling on him. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Barkington associate certain handling with things he likes such as treats and toys. Fearful: Barkington has been observed to baulk while on leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using coaxing or treats. It is important to always go slow and give Barkington the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Barkington would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
