Sirius plays rough, he likes to hide and seek, playing with water, fetching items and chasing bugs. He received interactive play more than twice a day and enjoys rough rope and vertical surfaces. The client described him as "very loving, he warms up to you and he's super funny". He enjoys dry food: Blue Buffalo and Delectables/Churu's for treats. The cat was lured into den slowly and with caution.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 07/07/26 FB47 In the den, looking out appearing calm, but was tense when approached with treats and was given treats and followed the laser. 7/10/26 FB09 Sirius was at the front of his kennel, soliciting attention once the door opened. He sniffed the treats offered to him but was more interested in receiving pets. He head-bunted the handler's hand, his tail high and twitching while receiving pets. He leaned into extensive petting along his head and body while peering outside, curiously. 7/11/26 FB09 Sirius was soliciting attention at the front of his kennel, his tail high and his eyes dilated. He head-bunted the handler’s hand and enjoyed extensive petting along his head and body as well as chin scratches. He kept peering outside curiously, eager to explore. He quickly ate the treats given to him and then returned for more pets. Coming along well. 7/17/26 FB09 Sirius was at the front of his kennel with neutral eyes and meowed for attention once the door opened. He scanned around the room curiously before he head-bunted the handler's hand for pets. When offered treats he eagerly licked them up while accepting pets along his head and body. After eating, he leaned into more petting, his tail high and vibrating. 7/22/26 FB73 Sirius is laying on top of his den as the handler approaches, head upright and curled up around himself. The kennel door is opened and he meows softly. He is offered a squeeze up using the scratcher tool and tenses for just a moment before quickly eating the whole thing. After a bit he comes to the front of the kennel, softly head bunting and allowing some petting on the head, cheeks, and down his back, tail held high.

Potential challenges comments:: The owner had Sirius for around 8 months when 2 weeks ago, Sirius began to have behavioral changes. The below bite/scratch incidents that broke skin were self-treated. Incident 1: The owner had a friend over who has two cats of their own. It is unclear if it was the scent of the cats that triggered Sirius to attack the friend on the legs. The friend was sitting on the couch and Sirius walked up, unprovoked and attacked. The client stated that they had to isolate Sirius, and the friend self-treated. Incident 2: The same friend was over again in the bathroom. Sirius was outside of the bathroom and the owner started going up to the bathroom to check in on them. Sirius was amped up and growled and lunged at the owner's right leg. The client then isolated him again and placed him in the basement of the home. Incident 3: The owner went to check in on Sirius in the basement and had food for him. He attacked, lunging at her left leg. Re-directed aggression occurs when a cat is experiencing high arousal from a stimulus, usually instilling fear or frustration, but is unable to direct their aggression to the stimulus and instead lashes out to the nearest human or pet around them. This type of aggression is like an impulsive reaction; it’s typically distressing for cat owners because this display of violence may seem unprovoked, especially when they’re unaware of the trigger. There was also a scratch incident that occurred in the shelter. On 7/30/26 a staff member was cleaning Sirius' kennel. She was reaching in to grab his tray of food when he started extending his paw towards her. The staff member grabbed a toy to distract him while reaching in, and Sirius swatted at her hand, resulting in an inch and a half scratch. Sirius is not neutered which could contribute to his behavior. Initially Sirius solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to nip. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Sirius becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 07/02/26 Sirius is on top of his den with forward ears and a neutral, relaxed expression. He leans forward to sniff the assess-a-hand and starts rubbing his cheeks and head along the hand, enjoying the petting. The assessor then attempts to pet the hand along his back. As soon as the hand touches his back, Sirius twists around and nips at the hand. He continues to nip as it is removed, alternating between nipping and attempting to rub his cheeks along it. His eyes are now wide and dilated, his tail thrashing. The interaction is ended and Sirius stays perched on his den, watchful. 07/23/26 Sirius is sitting upright at the front of the kennel, body and eyes neutral as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened on the opposite side of his double kennel and he is called over, he quickly walks to the front to greet the assessor, head bunting and leaning into all petting with his tail held high. He attempts to step out of the kennel and is tolerant of being maneuvered back in, allowing and leaning into all further petting when he is placed back into the kennel. When the door is closed towards the end of the interaction, Sirius sits upright in front of the door and extends a paw outside of the kennel, initially gently to solicit attention before beginning to use claws. 08/07/26 Sirius came to the front of his kennel with a meow and solicited attention. He sniffed the treats offered to him but instead directed his attention on the handler and leaned into petting along his head and back. After some petting, he began to playfully nip and grab at the handler, his eyes neutral and his tail high. When he began using claws the handler began to wave the feather toy in front of him and he playfully pawed at it. He eventually tried to grab at the handler, so the interaction was ended. Sirius tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
