Magician
Hello, my name is Magician. My animal id is #211222. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/30/2024.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.
Magician is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of aggression. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Pre-Screener Form Magician is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of aggression. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. A volunteer writes: Curled up in his cubby with his paw wrapped tightly around his eyes, Magician makes a concerted effort to blend in and maybe even hide himself from being noticed. We notice him though and we try to make things a bit easier even though he's not always the biggest fan of that. I like to bring Magician treats because I know he enjoys them and it's also how I'm trying to get to know him better. I've yet to really learn about him, so I can't tell you as much as I'd like but I'll keep trying because I know that underneath Magician's worried exterior is a soft little cat who probably just wants to live life on his own terms. These terms are likely far away from the Care Center. He's not big on all the sights and sounds, though he does know about other kitties. Magician came to us from a home with many other cats when their person passed away. It's a lot of changes for a sensitive hearted guy. Sometimes cats like Magician need a little extra time, a lot of extra love, and one big chance to shine as they're meant to do.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Magician was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment other than he came from a household of 15 cats.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/05/24 Vol. In den box for entire interaction. Offered dry treats & piece of chicken on scratcher tool & left inside den opening. Can't see any reaction. Light stroke on back side with scratcher tool. Didn't see any movement. Slightly lifted plastic cover. He is lying down with front of body facing forward. 10/06/24 Vol. Magician stayed in his feral den. No reaction to treats. 10.12.2024 Vol. In den box when approached & opened door. Offered & left dry treats inside opening of den box. Lifted den cover. Lying down facing forward. Offered squeeze up, backed up in den. Cover is down again. Offered pieces of chicken & more dry treats. Ignored. Back of den lying down when lift den cover again. 10.15.24 Vol. Hiding in den. Swatted when I tried to put a clean towel in kennel. No interest in Squeeze-ups. Didn’t react to laser. Never came out of den. 10.16.24 Vol. Magician was curled up inside den facing away from opening. He did not react when offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Did not respond to attempts at interaction, remaining in place and silent inside den. 10/18/24 FB47 Not ready for interaction at this time, in the cubby at the back, mostly ignored the laser, focusing on me then attempts to flee in response to offering treats, hisses, large pupils, sideways ears. I left catnip. 10/22/24 FB26 Inside the cubby upon approach. When opening the cubby door he quickly retreats with a blank stare. When attempting to pet with the scratcher tool he avoids contact and hisses. Left him alone to reduce stress and placed offered treats inside his kennel. 10.23.24 Vol. Magician was resting in cubby behind privacy paper. His eyes were wide and dilated, and his tail tucked around his body. When door opened, he tensed up and lowered his ears slightly. When offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, he pressed himself further into back of cubby, then sniffed at squeeze up briefly before turning his face away. After speaking to him softly and giving slow blinks, he continued to appear highly fearful, so we ended interaction. 10/25/24 Vol. Erect in top cubby behind privacy paper. Hissed and lunged when approached to open door - pulling back erect, ears flat and sideways, eyes round. Put in treat bowl.Put tool in cubby but did not approach. Magician remained erect, ears started to come up, eyes flickered between treat bowl and tool. Stayed a few moments and ended interaction. 10/30/24 Vol. Magician was on shelf in main kennel, eating wet food, and retreated into cubby when approached. His eyes were partly dilated. He hissed when offered treats on scratcher tool, and lowered his ears slightly. His body remained tense, and he did not respond to further attempts to interact. ---Continued in GAN---

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10.04.2024: Upon approach Magician was crouching on top of his kennel with wide eyes and dilated pupils that were scanning the room for an exit. He turned around in place and maintained erect ears that were tilted sideways. He sniffed, but then ignored hard treats, high-value treats and toys. Frozen, he tolerated touch with the scratch tool on his head. He hissed, licked his lips and fled off his den, pushing it towards the front of the kennel so he can hide behind it. 11.03.2024: Upon approach Magician was in his top cubby with sideways ears hissing at the assessor. When the assessor extended the scratch tool with Squeeze-up on it towards him, Magician spat and lunged. They kept the tool there immobile to give him a moment to reset. When attempting contact again, he displayed airplane ears and moved further away from the tool, hissing and spitting along the way. Magician is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to lunge, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
