Animal Profile

Onyx Junis

Hello, my name is Onyx Junis. My animal id is #233598. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Onyx Jinx is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

A volunteer writes:Onyx Junis was left with us when his owner departed for college. It must really be tough for Onyx Junis, said to be a very active cat, to find himself in a cage and separated from his owner he seemed to have had a very trusting and loving relationship with. A very snuggly cat he was, a lap cat enjoying to rest on his owner's chest, purring a storm and being carried like a baby....With others, Onyx Junis was rather a tough feline, playing roughly and at times swatting and nipping...He would have been tolerant of children but not too fond of cats and dogs. No wonder Onyx Junis is having a hard time at the care center. Nothing much to do, his "love" is gone for ever, all these strangers that mean nothing to him.... Why would he be nice? I like Onyx Junis.. He is no easy cat. He loves to play and yes, he plays rough. Does he trust me? No....But with time he could and may be he could trust you too....Onyx Junis is a one man(woman) feline  who has the potential to bring joy to a new owner who understands his limitations and will be able to work with them. Onyx Junis is waiting to start his new life with you.... What my friends at ACC say about me: I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

My medical notes are...

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Onyx Junis was crouched down on top of the den with his head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide eyes and was growling upon approach. When spoken to and opening the door, he steps back, harshly hisses, continues to growl, huffs and puffs, puts his tail between his legs, and shivers/trembles. When reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool, he quickly swats but misses the tool and steps further back. When making physical contact with his body, he immediately swats the tool hard with force, harshly hisses again, his body and tail becomes pilo-erect, and he continues to growl. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Onyx Junis is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
