Animal Profile

Shadow

Hello, my name is Shadow. My animal id is #195686. I am a male black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/14/2024, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Shadow is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! I have lived with cats. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am a sweet, social, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. Shadow tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/20/24 Shadow was lying curled up at back of cubby. His head was rested on his paws, but his eyes were open and partly dilated. He did not react when offered treats or toys. He tolerated brief petting with scratcher tool, lip licking once but otherwise remaining frozen in place. 3/22/24 It had been noted on the whiteboard that Shadow has not eaten - there were several food bowls, all uneaten, in the cage. In top cubby, head facing back, legs and back towards front, lying with head down with eyes open. As I approach, Shadow curled his tail and tucked his legs closer. Ignored treat bowl. Allowed head scratches with tool, no movement at all, eyes remain open, ears forward. No reaction to stopping or restarting head scratches. Ended interaction 3/23/24 Shadow was lying on his side in the cubby. No reaction to small talk or door opening, and reluctantly ate a treat. He remained immobile on his side, allowing pets on head and neck, neither tensing nor relaxing. 3.24.24 Resting in cubby behind the privacy cover. Did not lift his head when I opened the door and put some chicken and Temptations in front of him. Eyes appeared heavy and half closed, seemed to really not be feeling well. Closed eyes further when given head scratches with the tool, but otherwise did not react. 3/26/24 Facing the back alert with eyes wide. Accepts pets along his head and body. Slight interest on offered treats but just sniffs it and remains in position. Immobile throughout the interaction. 3.27.24 Shadow was curled up at back of cubby behind privacy paper, with his head ducked and eyes partly dilated. He avoided eye contact. With some coaxing, he ate squeeze up from scratcher tool and ten from my hand. He crept forward slightly to continue eating, and remained engaged even during loud noise in the room. He tolerated brief petting on his head. -Sitting behind his privacy sheet. Hissed when kennel door was opened. Backed away from clicker tool with Squeeze-ups. Left some canned chicken in his food. Went back later and saw that he ate it up. 3/28/24 Sniffs offered treats but allows petting along his head and body with the scratcher tool throughout the interaction. He slowly turns his head looking at the scratcher tool and stiffens in place.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Timid,Lap Cat,Shy

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Fearful,Inappropriate elimination

Potential challenges comments:: Shadow's previous owner reports that she was eliminating outside of the litter box. Please note as well that Shadow’s previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen (she shared only 2 litter boxes with 9 other cats). We are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address this behavior. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that Shadow be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully eliminates in her main litter box(es).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Shadow was laying down in his den upon approach with wide eyes and a tense face. He allowed pets all over and gentle upward pressure on his abdomen, both with the scratch tool, but didn't move a muscle. Shadow tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
