Winter
Hello, my name is Winter. My animal id is #241894. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Winter is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up significantly despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Winter came to ACC when his family had to move into housing with a no-pet policy. He's a shy, sensitive boy who prefers quiet spaces and gentle people. In his previous home he hid at first, then warmed up into a sweet, affectionate companion who liked to lounge, watch the world from the couch, and play softly when he felt safe. Shelter life has been overwhelming for him, but staff can see his gentle nature peek through when things are calm. My Ideal Home Winter needs a patient, experienced adopter who understands shy cats and can give him time to adjust. A predictable, quiet home with cozy hiding spots would help him settle in. Winter has a history of urinating outside the litter box in his previous home, so his adopter should be prepared to work with a veterinarian and set up a supportive environment with multiple clean litter boxes, unscented litter, and low stress. With patience, he can blossom into a calm, steady companion. Good with Kids? Winter lived with children but was described as timid and overwhelmed at times. Because he is fearful in the shelter, we recommend no young children. Older, quiet kids who move slowly and respect his space may be a good fit. Good with Other Pets? Winter has lived with other cats and tended to hide at first, then coexist peacefully. Slow introductions and plenty of safe spaces will be important. We don't know how he feels about dogs, so any dog should be calm, cat-savvy, and introduced gradually-or he may prefer a cat-only home. Other Fun Facts • Quiet "couch potato" who loves observing from a comfy spot • Enjoys crinkly toys and soft, gentle play • Eats both wet and dry food and loves Chicken Temptations

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/25/25 FB61 In hidey box upon approach, body and face tense. He watches me and slow-blinks as I open the kennel door and he tolerates petting along his head and body with the scratcher tool while flinching and tilting his ears. He leans forward to sniff the treats offered and he begins to eat them immediately! Will continue to build positive associations. 12/02/25 FB61 Hunched on perch, body and face tense, cheeks round and tail wrapped around body. He hisses continuously as I open the portal door and he shifts away from me and slow-blinks hard as I offer treats. He is tolerant of touch but I don't push it too far today. I speak to him softly and leave a catnip toy before shutting his portal door. About 10 minutes later as I'm working with another cat I look over towards him and he's finally eating the squeeze-ups I left! I give him some more as I make my way around the room and he does not retreat away or hiss this time. Has potential! 12/5/25 FB79 Seems pretty under the weather inside of his litterbox Winter has wide watery eyes with his paws tucked away and his ears forward. He had no reaction when i tossed in some treats or when i brought the tool in for him to sniff - he didn't sniff but he did tolerate all pets on his head and cheeks as well as down and around his body with no reaction. 12/09/25 FB61 Lying on top of hidey box, body and face tense, ears forward and feet and tail tucked. He hisses when I open the cubby door and he is tolerant of gentle petting on his head with the scratcher tool while leaning away and flattening his ears completely. I keep the interaction brief and slow-blink before I end the session. He was too focused on me to enjoy the treats offered during our session, however when I check on him later I see the treats are gone! 12/10/25 FB06 Sitting on top of his hidey box, Winter has forward ears, and wide eyes. Offering the scratcher, his face and body tense up. I attempt to pet him on the head and his ears flatten, he drops down and rolls onto his side, hissing and swats. Making another attempt to pet him, he flinches and swats. I end the interaction seeing he is stressed. 12/15/25 FB79 Winter was on top of a box in his kennel. I put a tray of Squeeze Up on the kennel floor. He looked at the food tray but did not come near it. I used the scratcher tool to put the tray on top of the box because he seemed to be stressed and did not want to put my hand near him. He cautiously began to eat. I placed the scratcher on the kennel floor so that he could see it. He grumbled so I moved it out of his sight. He seemed to be avoiding eye contact and was not responding to my attention, so I ended the interaction without petting him. 12/22/25 FB79 Winter enjoyed the bubble show i set up today; he was at the front of the kennel w wide eyes and forward ears as he watched then laid down in his bed with his paws forward and ate the treats i placed in front of him while looking at the show. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Noted to Spray on curtains. Urinates outside the box, on clothing and furniture about twice a weeks ever since he was adopted despite the box being scooped twice a day, not being shared with other cats, and being in a quiet and easily accessible are of the home. Spraying and inappropriate elimination previous may have been from being an unaltered male cat marking his territory around other cats. After monitoring for inappropriate elimination in shelter for two weeks, after being altered, Winter has been consistently using the litterbox. Please see behavior flyer due to fearfulness. 12/18/25 After meeting with Winter again, he appears to be deteriorating in shelter and is not adjusting well to the environment. He hisses and low growls, sitting low and hunched with a tense face and body, ears tilted when interactions are attempted - and looks past staff as if looking to flee. When staff attempts to touch him with the scratcher tool he swats at it multiple times.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Winter would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 11/23/25 Upon approach, Winter was laying at the back of the kennel with a neutral face and eyes, with ears forward. As the kennel door is opened, his eyes widen. As the scratcher is introduced he leans forward to sniff. Upon petting his head with the tool, he pulls his head into himself, but tolerates petting. Moving along his backside with the scratcher, Winter's ears flatten as he stares at the scratcher and begin to lip lick. Moving back to his head, his ears remain flat and continues lip licking. No pick up was attempted at this time. 12/19/25 Upon meeting with Winter again, he has begun to display signs of deterioration in shelter and no longer is tolerant of touch with the assessor's hand or with the scratcher tool. On approach, he can be heard low growling and hisses and growls with a low and tense body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted, and tail wrapped tightly when the cage door is opened. As the assessor attempts to offer their hand out, he hisses harshly and begins to look past them as if to flee. As they begin to lightly toss treats near him, he flinches and hisses but eats some of them. When the assessor offers out the scratcher tool, he hisses hard and moves quickly for the shelf with a tense face and ears tilted flat. He then swats hard at the tool multiple times. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended to prevent further FAS. Winter is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. He is noted to be a more fearful couch potato cat but because his previous owner reports he is friendly, affectionate, and playful once he warms up to people in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.
