Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormOden is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Oden has shown high levels of stress in the care center, repeatedly jumping at his kennel door, hard barking, and panting heavily, often producing saliva at the front of his kennel. Oden is also generally fearful, growling at some staff when approached. Oden remains highly vocal and overaroused upon returning to his kennel, and struggles throughout the day in the care center. Medically, Oden has started treatment for CIRDC.

Once outside, he pulls hard on leash and startles easily at sudden noises, sometimes trying to retreat. Oden would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner experienced with fearful dogs who can provide patient, reward-based handling and help him build confidence through slow, positive exposure.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Oden was very fearful, avoiding any staff and had his tail tucked. Owner leashed Oden and walked him to the end of the hallway where the leash was passed to staff. Staff started walking Oden down the hallway but once he noticed his owner was not there, he began to trash and plant. Staff was able to double leash and walk him into his kennel. Hook was used to remove the leashes.

Date of assessment:: 10/10/2025
Summary:: Due to Oden fearful behavior a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. 10/04/25: Due to not receiving vaccines, a handling assessment is not conducted at this time.
Summary:: According to Oden's previous owner(s), he is friendly, outgoing, and playful. 10/08/25 Oden is introduced to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Oden initially approaches the gate with a soft, wiggly body, while walking to and from the gate line. The female dog is guided into his pen to greet him face-to-face. Due to her exuberance, Oden is nervous, practicing avoidance displaying wide-dilated eyes. Oden will maintain his distance as the female dog attempts to make contact with him. Due to Oden's discomfort, he is moved into the next pen, separating the two in order for Oden to decompress. Oden is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 10/21/25: Oden is on his bed in the back of the kennel as the handler approaches. The handler opens the door and Oden comes up to the front with his body lowered. He eats the treats that the handler offers and they are able to clip his collar. Oden will then stand up on his hind legs as the handler opens the door wider for him to walk out. He will come forward cautiously, exiting the room with a crouched posture and starts to scramble as they exit the kennel room. He stops at the door and stands on his hind legs agin before baulking. The handler will kneel down, coaxing Oden to the behavior office while squatting backwards. He continues to crouch but is wiggly as he leans into the handler for petting. Once in the behavior office, Oden will shake off and immediately engages with the snuffle mats in the room, toggling between that and soliciting attention from the handler by leaning into their lap. Oden will then pull moderately to his kennel and is secured safely. 10/15/25: Oden is observed to jump off his bed and up to the fogged glass portion continously, hard barking and heavily panting with a puddle of saliva forming at the front of his kennel. Oden is easily leashed and taken out of his kennel where he begins to kennel fight with the dog across from him and is walked out of the room. Oden is taken for a street walk, and is neutral bodied, offers sit cues for treats and regularly checks in with the handler. Oden continues to explore the sidewalk, check in with the handler and when dogs or strangers approach begins to tense and walk on the other side of the handler. Oden is returned to kennel, barking immediately when entering the room but enters kennel with no issue. 10/09/25 Oden is jumping onto his kennel door excessively. He play bows at the handler when they attempt to leash him, running to and from the handler. His collar is clipped, as he allows it, remaining still with a wagging tail and he is taken outside for a lengthy walk. Oden maintains a moderate pace alongside the handler, displaying a still body. He loosens gradually, displaying a softer body. He collects treats gently when administered and will allow petting. Oden is returned to the facility, entering the building as well as his kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 10/9/25: Oden is standing at the front of his kennel on his hind legs as handler approaches. He would jump up at the door as the handler unlocks it and then would constantly back away from the leash as the handler attempts to leash him. He is comfortable approaching the front to take treats and would then retreat to the back quickly while dodging the leash. The handler is able to quickly lasso him after a few attempts and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a tense body as he would pull ahead and would constantly baulk to the ground and try to retreat back towards the care center when loud sudden sounds would happen. He is unable to be redirected with treats until he is further away from the sounds. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enter with no issues. 10/08/25 (PG note): Oden is standing at the front of his kennel and initially avoids the leash, retreating toward the back. The handler places treats in the loop of the leash, and as Oden eats, the lead is gently placed over his head. He is then escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on him, and the dogs approach the gate for a nose-to-nose greeting, both displaying a loose and wiggly frame. When the gate is opened, Oden’s playmate muzzle punches him in a playful manner, but the interaction startles Oden, causing him to display fear by lowering his tail, crouching, and displacement sniffing. Both dogs are separated, and Oden is returned to his kennel safely without issues. See dog-to-dog note for more information. 10/08/25 Oden is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body, jumping up and down excessively. The handler will attempt to leash him, and Oden will duck and dodge the lead. Oden will play bow at the leash as he avoids. The handler will pet Oden as he comes forward and eventually be able to toss the loop of the leash onto him. Oden is taken out for a walk. Oden maintains his loose, wiggly body, maintaining a moderate pace beside the handler. He is taken to the play yard where he will explore with a loose frame. Oden will take treats gently when administered. He also allows petting, leaning in when pet, remaining wiggly. Oden is returned to the facility where he will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Other,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Upon intake, Oden was very fearful, avoiding any staff and had his tail tucked. Owner leashed Oden and walked him to the end of the hallway where the leash was passed to staff. Staff started walking Oden down the hallway but once he noticed his owner was not there, he began to trash and plant. Staff was able to double leash and walk him into his kennel.These behaviors suggest high stress and fear, particularly around unfamiliar people and transitions, and highlight the need for slow, trust-building interactions. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Other/Bite history (human):Owner reported one incident where Oden nipped a relative that came into home.The bite did not break skin. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Owner reported that Oden will alert bark at strangers approaching the home. Training focused on desensitization and counterconditioning to unfamiliar people and stimuli may help reduce these responses.Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
