Animal Profile

Jerry

Hello, my name is Jerry. My animal id is #215943. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/4/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Jerry is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Jerry has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and is displaying a concerning level of kennel reactivity. When being taken out of his kennel, Jerry begins kennel fighting as he passes other dogs making it difficult for staff to walk as he has redirected twice. One incident did result in Jerry biting a staff member's hand but it did not break skin; the other incident resulted in Jerry snapping at the handler that was assisting the staff member that Jerry bit. Medically, Jerry is apparently healthy.

The handler waits for Jerry to get on all four paws before offering him pets. Jerry allows petting on his head, neck and back with a loose frame and wagging tail. Jerry continues to decompress. The handler re leashes Jerry and escorts back to his kennel where he is unleashed and secured without any issues. 12/10/24 (PM)Jerry greets the handler standing at the front of his kennel door with a loose frame, As the handler opens the kennel door Jerry begins jumping at the kennel door, pawing at the handler. The handler waits till Jerry stops jumping and sits before leashing. Once he sits Jerry is easily leashed and escorted out of his kennel and to the play yards. When passing dogs from a distance Jerry will focus on them with ears erect, a forward and stiff frame. Jerry is easily guided away from the dogs and into the pens. When in the pens Jerry will explore and scent the yard with a loose frame. Jerry is escorted back to their kennel, unleashed and secured without any issues. 12/10/24 Jerry is standing on his kennel door with a loose, wiggly frame vocalizing at the handler. The handler leashes him with ease, and they proceed outside for a walk. The handler takes Jerry up through the C staircase and jerry hops his way up maintaining a loose body. Jerry will explore upon arriving outside, maintaining a loose frame. Jerry isn't interested in treats or any toys the handler has for him. Jerry will sniff in many different areas, chattering in what appears to be left over urine. Jerry and the handler will commence their walk. Jerry sees birds and will pull in their direction when returning to the facility. Jerry enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 12/9/24: Jerry was leashed with ease and walked the short distance out of kennel room. Handler walked him down the medical hallway so there would be no opportunity to kennel fight. As they rounded corner another staff member was walking down the hallway at a distance towards Jerry. When Jerry noticed the dog he lowered into a half bow and pulled in their direction. Handler used mild directional leash pressure to move Jerry behind the wall as a visual barrier. Jerry remained focused in the dog's direction and did not take a treat offered. Once hallway was clear, they proceeded outside to the yard. Jerry was clipped to a drag leash and relieved himself while outside. He showed brief interest in a rope toy and a soft, squeaker toy. When a volunteer entered the yard to do a photoshoot, Jerry approached them and took treats hand fed. Jerry picked at the jerky but liked crunchy biscuit milkbones. Jerry accepted pets on his chest and side and his frame softened after some time in the yard. He would offer a sit without being asked when he wanted another milkbone. Jerry walked back to kennel without issue and walked straight in. Handler left a handful of milkbones. 12/07/24: Behavior team responds to the panic alarm and as they approach, are informed that it is a false alarm. Staff reports that the alarm was accidentally bumped as Jerry began kennel fighting with the dog directly next to the exit. As staff was guiding him away, he jumped up, biting their hand. The bite did not break skin or bruise. Behavior begins walking him back to kennel but due to his kennel being soiled, he is guided back out to the hallway. On the way out, he jumps up attempting to bite behavior handler. Jerry is stiff armed and once down the hallway, he settles slightly, pulling hard on lead. Handler keeps Jerry on lead and allows him to scent along the play yard. He will readily engage with treat toss and sits when cued. After his kennel is cleaned, handler keeps Jerry on a short lead, and he is returned to kennel without issue. 12/06/24 (Trainer Note): Jerry is jumping repeatedly onto the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is mildly difficult to leash due to digging at the kennel door but exits the room without issue. He is loose and social in the canine live room, engaging readily with the various enrichment items. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 12/06/24: ACS staff report that Jerry was attempting to kennel fight with the other dogs in the room when he turned and snapped at the handler. Handler was able to keep him moving and return him to the kennel without issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Jerry's potential challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner- Jerry came into the care center as a stray so his history is unknown. Jerry engages with enrichment items and interacts socially with handlers. However, he has shown reactive behaviors, such as attempting to kennel fight with other dogs and snapping at a handler when overstimulated. These behaviors highlight Jerry’s need for a structured environment where he can decompress, receive consistent training, and have his energy directed positively. Jerry is available for rescue through one of our New Hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Jerry is reported to kennel fight when leaving his kennel and lunges/thrashes when seeing other dogs and attempt to redirect on a handler walking him. To address Jerry's on-leash reactivity and barrier frustration, start by using positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior when he is leaving his kennel and when he sees other dogs. Gradually desensitize him to these triggers by exposing him to them at a distance where he feels safe, and slowly decrease the distance over time. Teach him alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or sitting quietly, and reward him for these actions. Use management tools like a front-clip harness to give you better control during walks. Consistent practice, patience, and possibly consulting a professional trainer for personalized strategies. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling- Jerry is reported to hard pull on the lead.
