Holmes

Hello, my name is Holmes. My animal id is #215498. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/26/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Holmes is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Holmes has displayed a concerning level of on-leash reactivity to other dogs and strangers. During an adoption interaction, Holmes began hard barking at other dogs as he passed on his way to the play yard. During the interaction, Holmes continued hard barking at potential adopters despite attempts to redirect him. When ending the interaction, Holmes attempted to redirect the two handlers that were conducting the interaction. He did not make contact but aimed at their legs and ankles. During his stay in care, Holmes has been anxious but tolerates leashing and some petting. Medically, Holmes has CIRDC and retained deciduous teeth.

Holmes was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. During his stay in care, Holmes has been initially fearful and anxious but does tolerate some petting when given time to warm up. He has shown signs of discomfort that escalated when introduced to unfamiliar dogs and is showing reactivity towards other dogs while on walks. During an interaction, Holmes began hard barking at potential adopters after becoming reactive to another dog he had seen prior. Attempts were made to help him refocus but he did not engage. He continued to hard bark at the potential adopters and then attempted to redirect on the two handlers present for the interaction. Due to these challenges, we recommend that Holmes to be placed in an adult only home where he can be the only dog through a New Hope Rescue Partner. A volunteer writes: If you feel like you are missing love in your life, dont worry! Holmes and Watson are on the case. These two shepherdy loves are young, joyful, and incredibly sweet. Holmes is the shyer of the two. He needs time (and yummy snacks) to warm up, and seems to feel more confident when his brother is with him! He has more exaggerated eyeliner, more poofy fur, and more floppy ears! These two were found running loose by Howard Beach together. A good samaritan stopped and brought them into his car to keep them safe from c

Summary:: Due to Holmes entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 11/29/24: When off leash at the Care Center Holmes is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Holmes approaches with a stiff frame, dropling with a slow swaying tail. Holmes scents the greeter female. Holmes starts whinning and retreats and seeks out the handler. The greeter is moved to the back of the pen to make space for Holmes to enter. Once in the pen Holmes hard pulls towards the greeter female. They greet face to face. Holmes grows stiff displaying hackles. When scented Holmes will run behind the handler and gives a hard bark. When the handler begins escorting Holmes out of the pens, Holmes attempts to circle back twice hard barking and lunging at the greeter female. Due to Holmes Defenseless the interaction was ended and Holmes was escorted out the pens.

Summary (6):: 12/17/24: Holmes is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the play yard. Multiple times while walking to the yard, Holmes will turn back and focusing on handler's feet, before walking again. Once in the yard, Holmes spends time scenting and jumps up on handler to solicit attention. He is easily redirected with tossed treats. Handler sprays squeeze cheese on the gate and he spends time interacting with it. After his session, Holmes is walked back to the Care Center. Holmes begins hard barking and pulling hard toward a dog in the next yard over. Handler keeps Holmes on a short lead and as he is walked past the yard, he redirects, biting handler's calve without applying pressure. Handler hustles him around the corner and down the ramp. He continues trying to pull backward toward the play pen. Holmes is walked inside, returning to kennel safely.

Summary (7):: 12/15/24 (staff report): (1) Staff report that Holmes began hard barking at potential adopters while out for an adoption interaction. Adoption staff attempted to redirect with treats but he shows no interest and remains fixated and hard barking. As adoption counselor walks him to the gate to exit, he snaps toward the other adoption counselor's ankles. He is returned to kennel safely. Staff reported that there were no obvious triggers to Holmes' reactivity during the incident. (2)Holmes was taken out for an interaction with potential adopters. On the way to the playpen, he became reactive when he saw other dogs. However, once inside the playpen, he continued to then keep hard barking at the potential adopters, when the counselor attempted to use treats to redirect, he did not engage. In response, the counselor moved him aside to help calm him down, in which he did seem to settle proceeding to then sit when asked. Once he was brought back near the potential adopters, he began hard barking once again and the interaction ended. As we were heading out of the playpen he redirected and began snapping at the second counselor who was assisting the first. He did not make contact but was aiming at the second counselor's leg and may have grabbed at her jeans. Holmes then tried once to aim at the first counselor's feet. With a stiff arm, the first counselor was able to walk Homles away, while back on the ramp he began walking normally. He was then safely brought back inside where he calmly re-entered his kennel. 12/08/24: Holmes is standing at the front of his kennel and is leashed with ease. He is brought to the live room for enrichment, where he paces and pants while marking around the room. Holmes sniffs the snuffle mat but shows no interest and walks away. Afterward, he is safely returned to his kennel without any issues. AH

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Holmes's escalation to hard barking and attempt to redirect, we recommend that he to be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to the behaviors displayed in playgroup and during his stay in care, we recommend that Holmes be the only dog in the home and not attend dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends socializing him in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Sam associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope Partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in during his stay in care, the behavior department recommends Holmes be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Holmes to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior he presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- During Holmes handling assessment he was shown to attempt to slowly mouth the handler's ankle and was easily refocused with treats during a jog and jump on the helper during knock. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout for Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During an interaction with a potential adopter, Holmes began hard barking at them. He continued to do so when attempting to introduce him. Holmes gave clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Holmes, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see the handout on earful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: Holmes has displayed some anxiety while in care - panting, and pacing. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement and force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/ Bite History (human): Holmes has been observed to become reactive to other dogs that he sees while out on the leash - hard barking and/or growling. He then attempted to redirect on two staff members who were conducting an interaction. Holmes did redirect on another handler during another interaction and bit their calf. The bite did not break skin. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
