We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of intake:: 3/27/2026

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Limited History)

Bite history:: Miles came into the care center from the police after his owner called to have him removed from the home due to his behavior. The owner reported to the police that a bite did happen 6 months ago, but no details were given.

Date of assessment:: 3/31/2026

Summary:: 03/31/26: Miles is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. He displays a tense body and will approach the helper, becoming stiff with high hackles. Miles avoids collaring and will sniff around the room. Due to this, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary (7):: 4/8/26: Miles is at the front of his kennel jumping and spinning off the door as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will pull moderately out of his kennel and to the play yard. Once int the yard, Miles will jump onto the handler socially and lick their hands. He will see a dog walking down the sidewalk and will begin to run along the fence line play bowing and whining. When the dog is no longer in sight, he will begin running around the yard hitting the end of the leash and spinning. On the sidewalk, he will continue this spinning behavior and will also run around the handler in repetitive motions while vocalizing. He is then returned to his kennel with no issue. 03/31/26: Miles comes to the front of the kennel with a loose body and wagging tail as the handler approaches. He allows the handler to lure him through the leash and pulls mildly to the canine training room. He leans into contact with a soft body and re-initiates when the handler pauses. However, Miles only allows the handler to pet him for short spurts before moving away. He pants moderately throughout the interaction. Miles allows the handler to clip the leash and is returned to kennel without issue. 3/30/26: Miles is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed as he sticks his head out of kennel and is then taken to the behavior room. In the room, he would walk around while sniffing to explore and mark his territory. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats. He pulls frantically back to his kennel and slowly enters with no issues. 3/29/26: Miles is laying down at the back of his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He begins to growl as the handler unlocks the door. He is able to stand up and slowly approach the front to eat treats the handler tossed inside. He would dodge the leash and retreat to the back each time the handler attempted to leash him. When he refuses to come forward again, he is able to be slowly lassoed and is then taken to the live room. In the room, he has a tense body and tucked tail as he walked around while whimpering. He is comfortable approaching the handler to take treats. On the way back to his kennel, he would walk frantically ahead and would slightly thrash a few times. He stops in front of his kennel and backs away. He is able to enter on his own with slight leash pressure.

The owner reported to the police that a bite did happen 6 months ago, but no details were given. In the care cneter Miles had shown to be avoidant of handling but is noted to take treats from the handlers and explore when taken out for walks. Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity; Miles is noted to move away when touch is applied to his neck and when leash pressure is applied. Training should focus on slow, choice-based handling, minimizing direct contact around sensitive areas, and gradually desensitizing him to touch using high-value reinforcement to reduce stress and prevent escalation. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: On intake Miles is noted to growl low and was attempting to snap at fingers near the cage, wn removed from the carrier, and he began to thrash on the leash. When take to kennel, a safety hook was used to remove the leash. He began to bite on the hook. Training should focus on slow, predictable handling, maintaining safe distances from triggers, and reinforcing calm behaviors at low arousal levels to reduce defensive escalation. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (human): The owner reported to the police that a bite did happen 6 months ago, but no details were given.
