Luminous
Hello, my name is Luminous. My animal id is #244065. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/19/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Luminous needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is a mature cat with chronic kidney disease. She needs a quiet home, out-patient monitoring by a local veterinarian, and a special diet indefinitely to manage her condition.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I came in with my friend Grayson 244064 and would love to find a home with them! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate. [Spay/Neuter Waiver - Permanent] Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with Heart Murmur and the staff veterinarians are issuing a PERMANENT waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. ACC does not have the facility to safely sterilize your pet with his/her current condition. However, your veterinarian will provide consultation on whether this procedure can or should be performed under their supervision. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment and proper oversight of your pet's health. All costs for follow up care and subsequent surgery is at the expense of the adopter.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Luminous was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. She lived in a home with 10+ cats.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/20/25 FB73 Luminous is crouched forward in her den, pupils dilated and body tense as the handler approaches. She tolerates brief petting with the scratcher tool before attempting to bolt out of her den. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 12/23/25 FB73 Luminous is laying in her den, crouching forward and tensing with dilated pupils as the kennel door is opened. She tolerates petting on the head and cheeks with the scratcher tool before fleeing to the main kennel area to avoid contact. A squeeze up is offered but she doesn't respond to it, fleeing to the other cubby to continue avoiding contact. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to fearfulness and skittish behavior. Counselor discretion advised
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Luminous was lying down in loaf position in the litter box in the top cubby with a neutral body and eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, she steps back and ignores treats offered. When reaching close to pet, she walks to the shelf and climbs down to the main kennel area to avoid attention. When reaching close again, she tolerates petting on the head and body but then skittishly retreats into the bottom cubby. She crouches down at the back of the cubby and leans away when pet and reaching around her body. When pulling her forward, she tenses up and stands her ground. During pick up, she remains tense and struggles in the assessor's arm. After placing her back down in the top cubby, she curls up in litter box when left alone. Luminous tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
