This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. He will avoid handlers, backing away from leashing and collaring and showing teeth at times. He has engaged in some training games with staff but mostly remains aloof. Medically, Reginald is apparently healthy. Reginald arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay at the care center Reginald has been observed to be fearful. Noted to snap at handlers hands and growl when leashing is attempted, he has allowed minimal handling. When an assessment was attempted Reginald was tense and avoidant of the handler. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (No Known History)

Date of assessment:: 5/12/2025

Summary:: *5/12/25*When brought into the assessment room Reginald had a neutral body and relaxed tail. Handler offers treats and Reginald is receptive taking the treat readily. When the handler presents the collar Reginald becomes tense and backs away from the collar. Handler offers spray cheese and he is not receptive. The handler attempts put the collar on and Reginald quickly retreats with a tense body, tucked tail and whale eye. The secondary handler offers treats and Reginald takes then quickly with a hard mouth before retreating further. Reginald watches the primary handler with a tense body and whale eye. When he bumps into the secondary handlers he flinches and jumps away head whipping towards the primary handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Reginald is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time. *5/3/25*Reginald has shown clear signs of discomfort in the care centers. When interacting with handler Reginald is tense and avoidant and continues to move away. When handler begin attempting to collar him while tossing him treats he displays whale eyes and his body tenses as he begins panting heavily. Out of concern for his overall stress level, an assessment will not be attempted at this time.

Summary:: 5/7/25: Reginald greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body.

Summary (7):: 5/13/25- Reginald was laying at the middle of his kennel with a neutral body, handler tosses in treats on the floor and he goes to eat them. While he was eating handler was able to leash, he was taken to the K9 behavior office. He was taking treats hard and handlers attempted to use a treat lure to collar. Reginald would actively keep moving away from other handler with a tense body and tail tucked, side eyeing them. He would go behind other handler that was holding the leash. After a few attempts handlers ended attempt at collaring. He was returned to kennel without issue. 5/5/25: Reginald is laying down in the back left corner of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He stretches and comes to the front with a neutral body as the kennel door is unlocked. Using treats as a lure, handler is able to leash (using a pre-clip) and remove him from kennel. He pulls moderately as he is taken to the yard. Once outside, he pulls very hard to the back fence. He presses his nose against the gate and huffs. Handler begins to toss treats on the floor and he consumes them. Handler begins to walk around the pen as he is fixated on the back fence. Reginald keeps his distance from handler, but is pretty food motivated, approaching for treats. Handler begins to play pattern games and Reginald engages. First the 'Up, Down' game by the back bench, then the 'Popcorn' game in the back pen. He shakes off and has a softer body for the remainder of the walk. He is returned to kennel without issue. 5/4/25- ACS was attempting to leash Reginald, he snapped at their hand and growled. He lip lifted when the handler attempted to leash again. 5/3/25: Reginald is laying in his kennel when handlers approach. He remains their as handler unlocks the door. Handler tosses in a treat but he does not engage. A different type of treat is tossed and he gets up and eats that one. Handler offers a treat through the bars. He takes it gently. He is leashed using this treat as a lure. He is walked on the street where he remains near handler, no pull on leash, looking around, not stopping to sniff. When headed back in the direction of the shelter, Reginald walks more slowly and keeps turning his head back. He will continue walking when coaxed by handler. In the behavior room he approaches the other handler with neutral body but when that handler stands alongside him to collar, he is tense, looking over his shoulder at the handler wide eyes. He tries to move away. He is returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Reginald so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Reginald's strict need for contact on his own terms and overall fearful demeanor, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope Partner: Reginald has shown clear signs of fearfulness and anxiety while in care, and was unable to make it through his assessment. Due to him allowing minimal handler since arriving at the care centers we recommend he be placed with a New Hope Partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: While in care Reginald has shown clear signs of fearfulness such as refusing to leave kennel, avoiding handlers, whale eyeing and snapping when attempting to make contact with Reginald. It is important to move slowly with Reginald, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: During his assessment Reginald panted frequently and heavily, he did not settle during his interaction. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
