Yams
Hello, my name is Yams. My animal id is #240817. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/3/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormYams is at risk due to medical reasons. Yams has a lameness of his right forelimb, causing by a deformity of his paw. As a result, he has significant osteoarthritis and is reluctant to walk - impacting his quality of life and our ability to meet his behavior needs in the shelter. He is also mildly overweight and has mild dental disease. Yams would benefit from a consult with an orthopedic specialist and will need continued pain relief and medical management for his chronic lameness. A low stress and comfortable environment will support his behavioral health and mobility.

Summary:: 11/26/25: Yams is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment,he displays a low body and tucked tail with whale eyes. He doesnt allows the handler to collar him, he is limping in his front paw and begins to heavy pant and pace displaying anxious behavior. Due to this, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time. 11/07/25: Yams is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment,he displays a low body and tucked tail with whale eyes. Once in the office, he smells the handlers but remains with a low body, with fast movement, he will headwhip and whale eyes. He takes treats from one of the handlers but remains tense and doesn't allow petting. Due to a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. 11/06/25:A handling assessment was not conducted due to Yams being sedated for his medical exam. 11/05/25: A handling assessment is not conducted due to yams displaying hard barking in his kennel and becoming uncomfortable when leashed. He is given more time to decompress.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/10/25 Yams is introduced at the gate to a female helper dog while on leash at the care center. Yams doesn't approach the gate, remaining at a distance. Yams appears conflicted, lip licking as he paw raises, reluctant to come forward. He remains still, reluctant to move. Yams is guided out of the pen and returned back to kennel, concluding the interaction. 11/6 Cannot attend PG due to awaiting health check.
Summary (7):: 11/25/25 (Assessment Note): Yams is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to the assessment room, where handlers attempt to place a collar and drag leash on him but are unable to do so due to his behavior. When handlers attempt touch, Yams backs away, gives side eye, and displays lip licks, indicating discomfort and avoidance. Because of these behaviors, Yams is returned to his kennel safely without any issues, and a follow up will be needed due to medical concerns . See Behavior Assessment/ medical history for additional details. 11/21: It is written on the board that Yams could not complete his mid-day walk and needed help getting back into his kennel, possibly due to pain from his injury. 11/17: ACSs report that Yams is having difficulty exiting/entering the building. He stops at the exit before the ramp and at the gate. The staff have tried taking Yams on the elevator to lessen the distance for him to walk, but he still balks and refuses to exit. When leashed to be removed or when in the room to be returned to his kennel, he attempts to kennel fight with one reactive neighboring dog. 11/10/25 (PG Note) Yams is at the front of the kennel with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will briefly attempt to kennel fight as they walk out of the room. He walks beside the handler to the play yard, limping and unable to put any weight on his right front paw. He will complete a gate greet (please see Dog- Dog for more information) and is then returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 11/8/25 (KSV): Yams is standing near the front of his kennel as handler moves around the room tossing treats into kennels when dogs are quiet/calm. Yams follows handler with eyes and head and looks at tossed treats but does not retrieve them. Handler walks to next dog and when they return, Yams is eating the treats from the floor. Yams slowly returns to front of kennel, watching the handler, accepting the treats that are tossed now. Handler begins practicing few rounds of auto-check ins, tossing the treats to allow Yams to opt in. Handler ends interaction after a few successful rounds. 11/5: As a handler is leashing and returning a dog to/from its kennel, Yams begins demanding barking at the front of his kennel; occasionally whines when he sees the handler. Yams accept treats with a soft mouth and slow tail wags. 11/4: ACS reported that Yams was baring teeth and growling during leashing.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that Yam be placed in an adult-only home at this time Place with a New Hope partner: Yams was brought to the care center as a stray and has spent time with his finder. The finder stated that Yams as friendly, outgoing, tolerant, and not picky with food. In the care center Yams is fearful and handling-sensitive dog who exhibits avoidance and defensive behaviors when approached. During his attempted handling assessment, Yams maintained a low body posture, tucked tail, and whale eyes, signaling significant fear and discomfort. While he accepted treats from one handler, he remained tense throughout the interaction, head-whipping in response to sudden movement and avoiding physical contact. Yams would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner experienced in working with fearful dogs. He will need a slow, trust-based approach and positive reinforcement training to help him build confidence, increase comfort with handling, and adjust to new environments at his own pace.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity: Upon intake staff was unable to remove his collar. He was leashed and scanned with no issues but when staff attempted to remove the collar he bared teeth and low growled. Yams is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment,he displays a low body and tucked tail with whale eyes. Once in the office, he smells the handlers but remains with a low body, with fast movement, he will headwhip and whale eyes. Incorporate cooperative care techniques and reward voluntary engagement. In the kennel, approach calmly and use high-value treats to create positive associations. Gradual desensitization to handling and equipment will help reduce stress and defensive responses. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Yams is noted to kennel fight when exiting his kennel. Kennel presence: Handlers reported that Yams was baring teeth and growling during leashing.
