Hello, my name is Bam Bam. My animal id is #214755. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 11/16/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Pre-Screener FormBam Bam is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Bam Bam in care has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment. Bam Bam recently has begun to become more aroused out of kennel, starting to mount staff, making it difficult to walk him safely. Bam Bam also has a history of growling and hard barking at staff, and allowing minimal handling, tensing up at staff when being handled. Medically, Bam Bam is being treated for CIRDC.

Bam Bam came into the care center as an owner surrender. In the care center Bam Bam displays behaviors indicative of heightened anxiety, environmental sensitivity, and arousal, which manifest as fixation on stimuli, intense scent-marking, and defensive growling. He often displays a tense and low growls when taken out of his kennel. While he allows handling with mild tension, his sensitivity and reactivity require a structured, low-stimulation environment with experienced handlers. Bam Bam is available through one of our resource partners.

Summary:: According to Bam Bam's previous owners, he gets along with other dog while on walks. 11/25/24 Bam Bam is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Bam Bam will greet the novel female dog at the gate with a tense, square body. Bam Bam displays a hard face before snarling at the novel female dog. Bam Bam is moved away and returned to kennel.
Summary (5):: 12/03/24 Bam Bam is standing on his kennel door with a loose body when the handler approaches. Bam Bam drops down to all fours and is leashed with ease. They proceed outside to the play pens. Bam Bam will pull his way out of the building displaying a loose frame, jumping playfully onto the handler. They arrive in the play yard and a drag leash is placed onto him. Bam Bam will explore being able to free roam. Bam Bam doesn't engage with any of the toys present. Bam Bam will take treats gently when administered but is picky with what he is receiving. Bam Bam will fixate on dogs as they pass with novel handlers, remaining relaxed appearing concerned. Bam Bam will walk away and continue to explore as they pass. Bam Bam is leashed and returned to the facility. On the way back, Bam Bam will begin to pull when seeing other dogs, pulling his way to the building. Bam Bam is returned to kennel with no issue.
Summary (6):: 11/28/2024: ACS reports that Bam Bam began to become aroused and mount staff. 11/22/24: Bam Bam is standing in the center of his kennel as the handler approaches. He initially tenses and growls, but comes to the front when the handler unlocks the kennel door. Bam Bam begins to jump on the kennel door with a mild pant, loose body, and wagging tail. He attempts to push past the handler, but is prevented and is easily leashed. He pulls moderately outside. Bam Bam pulls towards other dogs with a tense body and hard stare. He is returned to kennel without issue. 11/21/24: Bam Bam greets the handler standing in the center of his kennel. As the handler approaches Bam Bam jumps on the door standing and staring at the handler, ears back with a soft frame and wagging tail. Bam Bam is easily leashed and escorted out for walks. When on leash Bam Bam will moderately pull towards where other dogs have marked in order to mark himself. Bam Bam walks with a stiff frame and a high curved tail. Bam Bam will stare at other dogs as they pass with a forward posture. When they are close he will attempt to pull towards them. When passing birds Bam Bam will stare at them and mildly pull in their direction mostly tracking them as they take off or fly above him. Bam Bam is escorted back to the care center where he is unleashed and secured without any issues. 11/20/24 Bam Bam is lying down as the handler approaches. Bam Bam will low growl at the handler as they unlock the kennel door. The handler will begin to speak to Bam Bam in a high-pitch voice which makes Bam Bam less tense. Bam Bam comes forward and hops onto his kennel door with a relaxed, neutral frame and swaying tail. Bam Bam will allow the handler to leash him and take him outside to the play yard. Exiting the facility, Bam Bam will scent intensely, so much is preventing them from walking. The handler guides Bam Bam to the play yard where upon arrival, Bam Bam will immediately explore the pen. Bam Bam will intensely sniff all throughout the pen, chattering with wide dilated eyes. Bam Bam will become a bit tense when handler #2 drags a collar across his back to test his touch sensitivity. All though Bam Bam tenses up, he remains still allowing the handler to collar him. Handler #2 is successful, and Bam Bam moves away, shaking off and having slight zoomies. Bam Bam is retrned to the facility where upon returning Bam Bam will stop again to scent. While walking back, he will displace by attempting to mark different areas without any urine coming out, as well as chattering. Bam Bam enters the building and his kennel with no issue.
Summary (7):: 11/20/24: Bam Bam stands at the front of his kennel upon handler's arrival. Bam Bam will begin to growl as handler offer him treats. Kennel door will be opened slightly and handler will loop Bam over the head and he's brought out with ease to go on a walk. While out, Bam Bam will continuously fixate on handler shoes and pants. Handler will keep bam bam at a distance by demonstrating a Stiff arm while on a medium short leash. Bam Bam will relieve himself and will be escorted back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely. 11/19/24: (AM) Bam Bam greets the handler lying towards the back of his kennel. As the handler approaches Bam Bam begins low growling. The handler tosses treats into the kennel after Bam Bam de-escalates to low growling. His growling ceases. The handler continues to toss treats into the kennel to lure him forward to the kennel door. The handler goes to leash but Bam Bam will practice avoidance by moving his head to evade the leash. Bam Bam is escorted out of his kennel. When passing through the threshold of the kennel Bam Bam stiffens up, displays hackles and walks with a knot in his tail. The handler guides him outside. When on street walks Bam Bam moderately pulling but intensify when to track where other dogs have marked. Bam Bam marks every stop. When leaving the vicinity Bam Bam will walk on his tip toes, a head head, chest forward with a high curved tail. Bam Bam will begin drooling. Bam Bam will fixation on other dogs defecation moderately pulling over to it, scenting and attempting to plant himself down, gripping the ground with his nails. when being guided away. When passing other dogs Bam Bam will at first fixate before proceeding to "hard pull" towards them, attempting to walk on his hand legs. The handler waits for the dog to be out of sight and when Bam Bam has returning to being on all fours before moving forward. Bam Bam is escorted back to his kennel and unleashed without issues. (PM) Bam bam greets the handler lying in the back of his kennel with a neutral frame. The handler tosses in treats in order to lure Bam Bam to approach. He consumes the treats as he approaches. Bam Bam is easily leashed and escorted out of his kennel and to the play yards. When on leash Bam Bam will walk a head of the handler mildly pulling. Bam Bam will scent each spot he passes that dogs have marked. In the yard Bam Bam will spend his time exploring and scenting the yard. The handler tosses treats but Bam Bam will only investigate them not consume them. When other dogs will pass the yard Bam Bam will fixate on the dog "air scenting" in their direction. Bam Bam will begin to start drooling and will only look away when the dog has left his sight. Bam Bam fixates on a spot where another dog has marked scenting and licking to the point of chattering. Bam Bam is escorted back to his kennel where he is unleashed and secured without any issues.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity- Bam Bam has shown mild tension when handlers touch or collar him but generally remains still and tolerates these interactions. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- Bam ba, is reported growl and hard bark at handlers.To address his fearfulness, gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning, especially around new people and new environments, will build hiks confidence. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Separation anxiety/ Anxiety- In the prior home Bam Bam, is reported to have separation anxiety when left allow and will begin to bark. Gradual desensitization to being alone, creating positive associations with the crate, and providing comfort items can help alleviate his anxiety. Consulting a professional trainer or behaviorist may also be beneficial. please see the handout on Separation anxiety and generalized anxiety. Kennel presence- Bam Bam is reported to be hard barking, growling, and being difficult to remove from the kennel.
