Paris
Hello, my name is Paris. My animal id is #218708. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/11/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormParis is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns noted by the previous owner. Paris was mentioned in his previous foster home to lunge, growl, and bark at the fosters and has shown similar behaviors when trying to crate him. Paris in the crate would begin to snap or growl if anyone approached his crate. Paris in the care center has been reported to be social with staff but has started to display similar concerning behaviors mentioned in the home. Medically, Paris is overall healthy but recently received treatment for ear infection which will need a re-check in the coming weeks.

Paris arrived at the QUACC after returning from foster due to behavior concerns. Paris was reported in his previous foster home to lunge, growl, and bark at his fosters, particularly when confined. When crated, he escalated to snapping and growling if approached. In the care center, he has been social with staff, but his history of concerning behavior in a home environment remains a significant factor in his assessment. As a result, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Summary:: Due to Paris entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/17/25 Paris is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Paris will slowly approach the gate with a soft frame, appearing aloof as he stands neutrally in front of the gate. Paris will remain self-present as the novel female dog is aroused. The more she will jump onto the gate, Paris will become nervous, disengaging and displacing as he scents away from the gate. At one point he will whine a bit, unwilling to approach the gate. Paris is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 02/21/25: When off leash at the Care Center Paris is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Paris approaches whining with a loose frame and a wagging tail. Paris scents the novel female. The novel female immediately retreats to the handler. Paris remains present pacing by the gate. As the novel female practices avoidance by creating distance and hiding behind the handler Paris grows in frustration and begins fixating and escalating to hard barking. When the handler attempts to guide him away Paris will attempt to plant down and continues to hard bark, thus ending the interaction. Due to Paris's reactivity a face to face greet was not conducted.
Summary (6):: 03/28/25: Paris was brought to medical for treatment of an ear infection (otitis). He entered medical pulling hard on his neck lead, sniffing at dogs behind the glass wall in ICU, and then moving on to sniff around the main medical room. He sat and allowed a soft muzzle to be placed without difficulty. He walked over to a more isolated space for his ear exam and cleaning. He was tense throughout his ear cleaning. Twice while cleaning/administering medication to his left ear, he head whipped and made a deep noise (grunt/growl?). His left ear has more significant infection and is likely painful. His muzzle was removed without incident and he was returned to his kennel. 3/27/25: (MID) Paris is reported to be lunging and baring teeth at the front of his kennel and jumping at his door when handler approaches. He leash bites intensely on the walk and continues to bare teeth and lunging at the door when returned back to his kennel. 3/27/25: Took Paris for AM walk and had no problem leashing or walking him. On the walk he had a loose body and was fairly relaxed. He did show signs of fixation on birds but other than that the walk went fine and he went back in kennel with no issues. 3/27/25: Paris is reported to leash bite intensely on leash, and lunge/bare teeth at the front of his kennel when approached. 3/22/25: Paris is laying on his bed when the handler approaches. he approaches the front of his kennel when seeing the handler and is easily leashed. He is taken to the behavior office for a socialization session. He doesn't allow the handler to attach a drag lead to his collar, and it is noted that he will keep shaking his head and scratching at his ears. Paris is kept on a slip lead and is given different puzzle feeders to engage with. After finishing his puzzle feeder, he begins to walk and pace in front of the exit door, wanting to go out. He is taken back to his kennel without issues.
Summary (7):: 3/17/25: Paris came to front of kennel with a neutral frame and was leashed with ease. He walked through two kennel rooms on his way outside without displaying reactivity. Handler shortened Paris' leash as they walked past another handler/dog on the sidewalk. Paris walked alongside handler ignoring the other dog. Once in the yard, Paris was clipped to a drag leash for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Paris marked and relieved himself while outside. He was returned to kennel without issue. 02/21/25 (playgroup): Paris is standing at the front of kennel with a tense frame as handler approaches. He jumps up at kennel door barking intermittently. Handler tosses treats to the back of kennel to redirect him from the kennel door. Paris is leashed with ease and pulls hard out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Paris becomes tense, square and will hard bark at the gate. Handler grabs the drag lead and guides him away. Paris continues to pull hard toward the other dog. He is switched to a slip lead and returns to kennel safely. 2/13/25: Paris is reported to whine in kennel. 1/16/25: Paris is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and offered a treat which he takes gently before being brought out to the street. Paris walks alongside handler and does not pull unless he picks up the scent of something he is interested in, in which case he pulls hard. Paris sees a dog passing him when exiting to the street and ignores them completely. When walking on the street, he ignores people and stops to use the bathroom frequently. Paris is then brought to the behavior office for an assessment. During his assessment he approaches handlers with a loose wiggly body and allows petting/collaring without issue. He is then brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Paris so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- We recommend that Paris be placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Paris has been observed to jump up on handlers ina social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- The foster reported that Paris has been growling, lunging, and barking at the foster partner and has shown similar behavior towards themselves when they try to crate him. He has been tense and growling in the crate when approached but is fine on walks. Barrier frustration- When Paris was in his crate in the in his foster home he would begin to growl and snap when anyone approached the crate or touch it.
