Animal Profile

Atreus

Hello, my name is Atreus. My animal id is #202893. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/17/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Atreus is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. he is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! Atreus interacts with the observer and solicits attention. Atreus has some behavior challenges adoptions staff can explain in more detail. We recommend that he go to a home with experienced cat parents and older, more mature children. Please check here for updated adoption hours. A volunteer writes: Some of us are the most outgoing social butterflies and others choose to show the best of ourselves in our own time. Meet Atreus. Atreus had a home since kittenhood and has been described as friendly, affectionate, and playful. Sounding like a dream, we also know, however, that Atreus can feel a little shy around strangers and takes his time to show the best. This is completely understandable, but adds a challenging layer to making new friends in a busy shelter. My favorite thing about Atreus is that when I visit his condo, he'll first come forward as though asking what business I have, but then he'll sit and settle as soon as he sees the squeeze up in my hand. With hearts in his eyes, Atreus accepts the snack and then looks adorably confused when the squeeze up is finished. While he hasn't been totally sure about pets, he is sure about trying his very best to find a family who will welcome his pace and his quirks with open arms for all of his friendship in return.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/18/24 FB58 Sitting out next to his den with an alert face and eyes wide, ears slightly tilted. I place some treats down at the front and pet along his head and back as he eats. When the scratcher tool initially makes contact, he tenses but continues to eat and allows pets, does not lean in. 7/21/24 FB79 Laying on his Den, Atreus slow blinks as i open his kennel door; he has is tail loosely wrapped around his body and slight leans in for pets on his head and cheeks when i offer my hand. He doesn't take any treats but i leave a few for later when he feels more comfy. 8/1/24 FB79 Today, Atreus displayed the same behaviors from the previous enrichment note. So cute boy really! 8/6/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, initially hidden from view. He rushes out when offered squeeze-ups and begins to eat them while I have the door open. He tolerates petting along his head and back with the scratcher tool while leaning in and remaining slightly tense in the body. His tail is lifted slightly and I reward him with more treaties. Did well today! 8/8/24 FB79 Inside his den, sweet boy Atreus peaks his head out when he hears me speak; he sniffs the treats that i toss for him and slowly steps out to inspect. He allows pets on his cheekies and on his head then begins to enjoy his treaties. I am able to coax him fully out of his den with a high tail where he makes sure he finishes all his snacks while accepting pets then returns to his den. 8/15/24 FB1261 Standing in front of kennel, body slightly tense, ears forward, eyes alert, tail low and pupils dilated. He steps towards me to eat the greenies offered, and when I pet him with the scratcher tool along his head and shoulders he leans in vey gently, ears slightly tilting. I reward with more treats right away and pet him a few more moments before rewarding him with a scented toy and a couple more treats. He had just received a medical treatment and was very upset prior, so I am unsure if he would lean in more or less under different circumstances. 8/18/24 Vol. Atreus was in his den and walked out when I approached. He went into the litter box compartment, so I placed some treats in there, near the box. He walked back to the main compartment and sat between the den and the kennel wall, at the far back. I waved a wand toy at him but he did not play with it. I began to pet him with the wand and he swatted it, not playfully, but to push it away from him. He didn’t eat any of the treats offered to him. He is shy but accessible, not hiding. 8/25/24 Vol. Atreus saw me through the glass door and immediately rolled over, soliciting attention. I opened the door and gave him Temptations, which he ate. I petted him with a scratcher and then with my hand. He accepted all touching. He seemed to be a little uncertain as to how to react, but did not scratch or lash out. He is a funny, energetic cat.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Affectionate,Playful,Curious,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information. Atreus bit the husband on the hand broke skin. When he would come for attention there didn't seem to be an issue until today. Client stated Atreus came seeking attention once given him turned swatted and attempted to bite then ran away. He was then found in a box in the bedroom kneading the blanket. again when Atreus was fed after eating he approached for attention and swatted, It was then the client picked up Atreus to place him in a carrier. client stated at that time Atreus defecated and urinated on him.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Due to showing signs of FAS in shelter, and requiring a longer period to warm up - the behavior team recommends Atreus goes to a home with no young children under the age of 13 to provide him with an environment in which they can appropriately acclimate. Atreus is noted to be shy and timid but plays gently with children having previously lived in a home with a 10 and 16-year-old.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Atreus was standing in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face slightly tense, ears forward and tail raised. Atreus made eye contact when spoken to and began rubbing against the kennel door. Atreus allowed petting along his head and body while leaning in and raising his tail. Atreus focused on the room behind the assessor consistently and he began to wave his tail around in circular motions. The assessor ended the assessment at this point without attempting pick up, to both reduce stress and avoid potential escalation. Atreus is sweet but sensitive to his surroundings with the potential to become overstimulated. Atreus displayed similar behaviors during his re-assessment. Atreus interacts with the observer and solicits attention. Atreus has a previous bite history and the potential to become overstimulated. We recommend that he go to a home with experienced cat parents and older, more mature children.
