Levania
Hello, my name is Levania. My animal id is #247897. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 7 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/18/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLevania is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Upon arriving at the care center Levania displayed high levels of fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) and allowed minimal handling. He displayed a tense body and whale eyes handlers and has escalated to growling when being handled. With time, Levania has shown improved sociability, approaching handlers, soliciting contact, and is treat receptive. Unfortunately, Levania has been showing escalating reactivity to dogs in kennels and pop-up crates making it difficult to handle him safely. In one instance noted to lunge intensely toward a crate and is difficult to redirect. Medically, Levania is apparently healthy.

We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace.

Summary:: 3/14/26: Levania rushes forward towards the gate to greet another dog, tense body, fixating on the other dog and moving along the fence line as the other dog moves away.
Summary (6):: 3/24/26: Levania is at the front of his kennel barking with a wagging tail towards the handler. As handler begins to unlock the kennel door, he begins to jump onto the kennel bars but is easily leashed. As he exits the kennel, he would immediately pull towards the neighboring kennels and is then placed on a short and tight leash; he would then begin to stand on his hind legs. Once handler exited the room, Levania would vocalize in a very high pitch and snap towards the handlers hand. A treat is tossed to the floor, and he is then taken to the yard. Levania would have a moderate pull ahead of the handler and is taken to the furthest pen in the back. While in the pen, Leavnia would begin to display displacement behaviors, which shortly turned into him jumping onto the handler with an open mouth but would not make any contact. This behavior would continue but was redirectable with treats tossed. Handler decides to do a short lap around the perimeter of the yard; once they enter another pen, Levania jumps towards the handler and snaps at their abdomen area. Handler decides to return him due to this; as they re-enter the shelter, he begins to fixate on other staff members in the hallway, but treats are tossed ahead of him, which he remains focused on. He is then easily clipped and placed back into his kennel with no further issues. 3/19/26: Levania is reported by ACS to lunge, bare teeth and growl at a pop-up crate just outside of the kennel room. 3/15/26: It is reported by staff via the whiteboard that Levania is soliciting pets, leaning body into handler, but noted that Levania was not petted during the interaction. 03/14/26: Levania is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She jumps at the kennel door and barks at handler excitedly, and is distracted and leashed with treats. Levania walks with handler pulling toward dogs as she walks out the room with moderate intensity. She continues to pull down the hall and stairway and walks out to the yard with handler for a gate greet. While waiting for another group of dogs to finish their gate greet Levania explores the yard and solicits pets from handler briefly. After finishing her gate greet she is brought around the yard and frantically pulls forward until she is brought back to kennel. She pulls toward dogs when returning and enter kennel following tossed treats. 3/12/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Levania "pulls hard; solicited pets and scratches; excited by other dogs". He is also observed to bark and pulls towards dogs in crates as he walks past them
Summary (7):: 3/5/26: Levania is sitting at the front of his kennel, neutral body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. In the hall he pulls hard towards another staff member and can not be refocused. The staff member extends their hand with a treat but he is not interested, he continues to pull hard towards the staff member, slightly tense body, rapidly wagging tail. MAin handler had to pull him away. He is walked on the street where he is neutral bodied and aloof. He will sit for treats and take them gently. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel. 2/26/26: Levania is standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He takes treats from handler and is easily leashed and remvoed from kennel. Once out of kennel he attempts to pull towards the neighboring dog that is vocalizing. He is kept on a short leash and pulled into the hallway. He is walked on the street where he remains soft and will periodically look up and bounce up on his back legs towards the direction of the leash and handlers hand. He is easily redirected with treats. He will sit for treats. When seeing other dogs, he will pull hard with a tense body and not easily called away. Pressure is placed on the leash to get him to move away from the other dogs. His leash is clipped while he is distracted and returns to kennel without issue. 2/20/26 (assessment): Levania is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. Levnia als puls towards another dog with a neutral body, but disenages as he exits. On the street, Levania walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension. He doesn't display people reactivity, but pulls to sniff a passerby. Levania gets startled to a loud sound made a few feet away but recovers. Upon entry, the handler brings Levania inside for her assessment but it is ended early to reduce FAS (see notes). The handler then returns Levania to his kennel.
Date of intake:: 2/18/2026
Summary:: Tense, fearful, retreats from mc scanner and leash, freezes near kennel
Date of initial:: 2/19/2026
Summary:: Tense, uninterested in treats, moves away and growls when attempting contact
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Levania so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children (Under 13): Due to Levania's fearful disposition and need for contact on his own terms, we recommend a home with no children. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Levania has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed. Place with a NH Partner: Levania has been showing intense reactivity toward kennels and dogs in pop-up crates. We recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner in an adult only home that can carefully manage her behaviors.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner: Levania has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Since arriving at the care centers Levania has displayed fearful behavior and has escalated to growling during handling for medical exams. It is important to move slowly with Levania, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Levania to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on fearful and defensive aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Levania has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Noted to screech, bark, and pull hard towards other dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected until the dog is out of sight. He is also observed to pull hard towards other people. Levania will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
