Star was surrendered to the care center as a stray, and we have no known history on her behavior in a home environment. Star has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has shown highly fearful behavior; during her handling assessment she was shaking and would freeze in place, though would quickly lean in to handlers when they knelt down to her or picked her up. Due to her levels of fear, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide a period of decompression and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Upon intake Betty was friendly and tolerant of all handling. She allowed counselors to scan for microchip, collar and pick up/carry. She was taken back to medical for vaccinations and placed into her kennel. All done without any concerns.

Date of Intake: 10/17/2026

Date of intake:: 10/17/2026

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history

Date of assessment:: 10/21/2026

Summary:: Star has shown highly fearful behavior while at the care center. When brought to the behavior office for her handling assessment, she stood still with a tense body, shaking. She would lean in and press against the handler when they crouched down to her, but when the handler moved she remained frozen in place. For these reasons, out of concern for her fear and stress, a handling assessment was not conducted.

Date of intake:: 10/17/2026

Summary:: Friendly, docile, tolerant

Date of initial:: 10/18/2026

Summary:: Allowed for handling and tasks

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Star's fearfulness, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Star has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Star has shown highly fearful behavior while at the care center, shaking and freezing in place during her handling assessment. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Star should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. She would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
