Chonkz
Hello, my name is Chonkz. My animal id is #225588. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/26/2025.
Chonkz is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Chonks has not acclimated well to the shelter environment during his stay. He was initially highly fearful and avoidant of interaction with staff and handlers. Over time, he became easier to remove from the kennel but would remain mostly aloof, occasionally engaging with toys; he was still uncomfortable with most interactions. Chonks has recently begun to lunge, bark hard, and snarl at staff that pass his kennel, occasionally fixating on their legs or swiping his paw out towards their ankles. Medically. Chonkz is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

While he tolerates being collared with a slow approach, he bolts away from the handlers once he is put on a drag leash. His tail is tucked, with whale eyes, pinned ears, and staying at the door that he entered the office through. Due to Chonkz, avoidance and fearfulness, a handling assessment was not conducted, and he is returned to his crate without issue.***
Summary:: Due to Chonkz entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/05/25 Chonkz is introduced at the gate to a male dog while off leash at the care center. Chonkz doesn't greet the male dog, rushing the gate displaying a tense frame. Chonkz has his hackles rose, displaying a square posture as the male dog hard barks at him. Chonkz as well as the male dog is moved away from the gate to decompress. Chonkz is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 04/30/25 Chonkz is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Chonkz will approach the gate with a soft frame to greet the novel female dog. Chonkz will mark the novel female dog from behind the gate showing signs of sexual motivation. He remains self-present as she ignores him and Chonkz will solicit attention from one of the handlers present. Chonkz is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 06/06/25: Chonkz is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He jumps up at kennel door and shows no interest in tossed treats. Handler leashes Chonkz and he exits kennel, walking with a slightly tense frame and tucked tail to the Live Room. Chonkz displays a tense, trembling frame throughout his time in the room. He will slowly approach handler as they kneel down but becomes uncomfortable and will lean away to create distance again. Chonkz paces the room and shows no interest in enrichment items offered to him. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely.
Summary (6):: 6/6/25: Chonkz is observed to rebound off his kennel wall continuously, while growling and lunging towards the front of his kennel while approached, unable to be refocused and continues to do it even when the handler walks away. 06/05/25: Chonkz is lying down in his kennel but quickly runs to the front to greet the handler with a neutral frame. He allows the handler to leash him with ease and is brought out for an enrichment walk. Chonkz is then taken to the play yard, where a drag leash is placed on him. While in the yard, he displays signs of anxiousness, including heavy panting and seeking exit behavior. Once the session ends, Chonkz is brought back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely. 6/4: Chonkz is now lunging, hard barking, and growling at people when they pass his kennel, even when the room is quiet. 06/03/25 Chonkz is witnessed in kennel snarling and growling as handler approaches. Chonkz will then lunge at the door excessively. 6/3: A handler is carrying a bin of toys to the behavior office; as they walk through the room, they pass Chonkz's kennel. They initially walk past him but stop when they hear a slam on a kennel door. They look around to find the source when they hear it again, but louder and harder. As they turn around and get closer to Chonkz, they can hear him snarling, and he stretches his paw out to swipe at their ankle when the handler is close enough to his kennel. 5/29/25: Chonkz is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, initially growling at his reflection of the saddle door glass when the handler approaches. Chonkz appears tense, but approaches the handler slowly. Chonkz is leashed, but he remains tense with hard eyes looking at the handler. Chonkz is removed from kennel and brought into the behavior office where he remains stiff, running towards the door seeking exit. Chonkz looks very bruised from his surgery site and uncomfortable, so the handler gives him some squeeze sprays to see what he likes, and is given the one he eats inside of his kennel to enjoy and rest. 5/20/25: Chonkz greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He walked to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Chonkz spent time scenting and relieved himself while outside. When handler tossed toys he became loose and bouncy, as if about to burst into zoomies. Chonkz would sometimes startle if handler moved around too quickly so they did not continue to try and engage in play. Chonkz was returned to kennel with ease. 5/17/25: Chonkz is observed to lunge/growl at staff members that pass his crate, fixating on the staff members' leg movements as he sees them pass.
Summary (7):: 5/7: Chonkz is lying down in his crate when a handler approaches. He stands and comes to the front of his crate, allowing the handler to leash him, and quickly bolts once the door opens. His body is tense, his tail is tucked as he passes the other crates towards the behavior office for a reassessment. Once in the office and a drag leash clipped to his collar, Chonkz begins pacing the room seeking an exit. Handlers offer him a variety of high-value treats (spray cheese, liver, sausage), but he does not take them nor show interest in the sound of a squeaker. Chonkz does not attempt to interact with either Handler. With heavy coaxing, the assistant walks Chonkz over to the assessor, and he begins his assessment; his body remains tense, tail low, ears pinned, eyes wide. Once his assessment is complete, Chonkz scurries back to his crate and the leash is removed without issue. 04/30/25: When the handler approaches Chonkz standing in front if his crate door. He easily leashed and escorted out of the care center to the play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction (Please refer to Chonkz behavior assessment for his dog-to-dog summary. When on leash Chonkz is on leash he will moderately pull but would frequently check in with the handler. After his interaction Chonkz is escorted back to his crate where he is safely secured. 04/29/25: When the handler approaches Chonkz's crate he is standing in front of the door with a neutral frame. Chonkz is easily leashed but once leash he attempts to bolt out of the kennel. Chonkz is escorted out of the care center for a street walk. Chonkz will walk ahead of the handle, moderately pulling and panting, with red eyes. When on walks, Chonkz will walk with a stiff tail and frame. Chonkz will hard pull towards where other dogs have marked, scenting before marking again. Chonkz is escorted back to the care center where he is unleashed and safely secured. 4/28: Chonkz is sitting in his crate when a handler approaches. He backs away as the handler unlocks the crate, before attempting to bolt out of it. The handler offers him treats and he takes deep sniffs but does not eat them. When attempting to leash him, he ducks once with whale eyes, but does come forward with coaxing. Once leashed, Chonkz is taken to the behavior office for his assessment. Chonkz begins seeking an exit despite attempts to offer him a variety of treats. While he tolerates being collared with a slow approach, he bolts away from the handlers once he is put on a drag leash. His tail is tucked, with whale eyes, pinned ears, and staying at the door that he entered the office through.
