Maxy Waxy
Hello, my name is Maxy Waxy. My animal id is #249972. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/18/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMaxy Waxy is at risk due to behavioral & medical concerns. Maxy Waxy arrived at the Care Center with limited history. Upon arrival Maxy Waxy was treat receptive and allowed handling. However, Maxy Waxy has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. Maxy Waxy has rapidly deteriorated in kennel. He fixates on objects in his kennel, biting, shaking, and is very difficult to refocus. Maxy Waxy has also shown a concerning low threshold for arousal making it difficult to handle him safely. In one instance he has been reported to lunge at handlers legs attempting to bite. Medically, Maxy Waxy has chronic otitis - scarred down aural hematoma occluding canal. We recommend consultation with veterinary dermatologist to consider performing a TECA surgery.

Summary:: Since arriving at the care centers Waxy Waxy has displayed high levels of stress and anxiety. He will fixate on and grab hold of inanimate objects biting and shaking them and will do the same to his kennel bars. He has also escalated to lunging and attempting to bite a staff member at one point. Due to his concerning and escalating behavior, he is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 3/20/26 (pm walks): Maxy Waxy is biting on his water bowl as the handler approaches. Even as he is leashed, Maxy refuses to leave his kennel, fixating on his bowl; once he breaks his focus, the handler adds leash tension and pulls him out the kennel. While walking past an open door to the yard, Maxy begins biting on the door; the handler adds leash tension, and Maxy finally enter the yard. There, Maxy engages with the handler: he takes treats from them with hard pressure, jumps on their lap as they're seated, and allows pet. Maxy also attempts to pull towards a dog bed, but the handler pulls him away. While the handler is stood up and not paying attention to him, Maxy jumps on his hind legs onto theirs, and bites on their treat pouch; the handler straight arms the leash, but he does the same, so they straight arm him again. Then, Maxy seemingly looks up at the leash (which is still straight-armed), but the fixates on the handler's feet/legs. Each time he quickly approaches, the handler straight asms the leash. Maxy pauses briefly and then jumps to bite the handler's right thigh (minimal contact, no broken skin). The handler straight arms the leash once more and brings Maxy back inside. the handler clips their leash and walks Maxy Waxy to his kennel. As soon as he sees his filled water bowl, he begins to bite on it; the handler tosses treats into his kennel and he enters on his own. the handler is able to remove their leash with ease.
Summary (7):: 3/20/26: Maxy Waxy is reported to bite and hold objects nearby, such as a dustpan and broom, poop scooper, and a mini shelf. As he returns to his kennel, Maxy Waxy vocalizes while biting and tugging his water bucket. Due to the intensity of his biting, it has caused his mouth to bleed. Additionally, Maxy is extremely fixated on him water bowl. When K9 behavior makes the attempt to remove with a hook, Maxy pulls it away from the font, and brings it to the back of kennel, still gnawing on it. After the handler is able to remove the bowl, Maxy Waxy goes back to biting on the water bucket. Even though the handler gives him enrichment, Maxy Waxy briefly focuses on that but then goes back to his bucket. 03/19/26: Maxy Waxy was observed to tip over his water bucket. He then proceeded to intensely bite and pull at the bucket repeatedly. 3/18/26: K9 behavior assists with bringing Maxy Waxy in. Handler approaches Maxy in the airline crate in the lobby, he is loose and wiggly taking treats through the door. His airline crate is carried to the behavior office. He continues taking treats with a soft body. Handler sprays cheese the crate door and he licks at it. Handler uses a hook to try to leash Maxy but he retreats to the back of the crate with a neutral body and dodges the leash. Handler then tosses a bunch of treats at the front of the crate, as he is eating them handler is able to reach in and leash Maxy. Handler fully opens his door and he doesn't exit. Handler tosses treats outside of the crate and he slowly exits eating them. Handler to able to unclip and remove his harness. He has a neutral body and slowly walks down the hallway. He is easily clipped. When he is at his kennel his jumps up putting his front paws in and starts to drink water. Handler tosses in a bunch and treats Maxy slowly climbs in without issue.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Maxy Waxy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Maxy Waxy's lack of impulse control and escalation to lunging on leash, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope Partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior: Maxy Waxy's previous owners report that he will destroy and chew on objects in the home. Maxy Waxy will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Maxy Waxy will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During an interaction with a staff member Maxy Waxy attempted to bite handler while on leash and has been reported to bite inanimate objects in care. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy - and ending play or attention whenever Maxy Waxy puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On-Leash Reactive/Barrier Frustration/Kennel Presence: Maxy Waxy has been observed to bite at kennel bars and his metal water bowl in his kennel. Please see handout on On-leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low-Threshold for Arousal: Maxy Waxy quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of peoplee and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Maxy Waxy. Please see hand-out on Arousal.
