What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary (4):: 2/27/25: Atina is observed to bite on the kennel walls. 2/26/25: Atina is at the front pacing back and forth panting. Handler offers her treats but she is not interested. Spray cheese is sprayed along the bottom of the door and she engages with it momentarily. The leash is secured and she is removed from kennel. She is not in the front kennel but turns around to cage fight with the kennel next to her further in the room. Handler pulls her to the hall where she jumps up bites the leash. Handler tosses treats and she stops leash biting. Treats continue to be tossed on the ground to distract her. She is walked on the street where she is aloof, pulling forward, hypervigilant. She pulls hard back to her kennel and once in, lowers the front of her body, head down. Treats are tossed and leashed removed. 2/23/25: Atina is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is not distracted with treats and jumps up at the kennel door when leashing, briefly tangling herself in the leash. She is eventually leashed successfully and exits kennel attempting to kennel fight intensely. She is kept away by handler and begins to bite the leash intensely. She lets go of the leash on her own and begins walking with handler. She pulls moderately out to the street and uses the bathroom as soon as she reaches the street. Once outside she stops pulling and walks alongside handler during her walk. She walks past people without issue but when spotting a dog walking ahead of her she begins pulling mildly towards them, she is redirected by breaking line of sight. She is walked for a bit more before being brought back inside. She is clipped and attempts to kennel fight when returning to kennel. She is returned and interaction is ended.
Summary (5):: 2/22/25: Atina is at the front of her kennel as handlers approach. She is offered many treats and distracted by a second handler while first handler attempts to leash her. Second handler uses a long treat to distract her and she is successfully leashed. She exits kennel quickly and bumps into a squeegee on the wall causing it to fall on Atina, startling her. She pulls towards the dogs while hard barking and once out the room she turns to handler and gives another hard bark. Handlers toss treats to redirect her and she begins walking forward to the elevator with handlers. Atina is taken to the street for her walk, during which she takes treats from handlers gently. She walks past people on the street without issue and will stop to use the bathroom or sniff spots on the street. Atina will turn to second handler and stare at them until treats are tossed and will quickly turn to face handler again. She does not pull during her walk and after being out for a while, she is brought back inside. Handlers toss treats on the ground when entering the elevator and clip Atina while she is distracted. She is returned to kennel with treats tossed inside and interaction is ended. 2/21/25 (PM): Atina is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. Handler begins giving Atina treats which she accepts softly from handler. She begins jumping on the kennel door as handler unlocks door and begins attempting to leash while distracting with treats. Atina looses focus of the treats and begins fixating on the leash and starts biting the leash and tugging it back into kennel intensely. She keeps hold of the leash momentarily after handler releases pressure on it. Handler uses a rope toy and squeaker to briefly attract her attention, during which point handler grabs the leash again. Handler attempts to leash again and lassoes the leash over her head and quickly opening her kennel door. She exits and briefly pulls towards the dogs she passes but is kept away by handler. She is brought to the street for her walk, during which she walks alongside handler and does not pull. She walks past most people without issue but will occasionally pull towards people she sees passing on the street. Atina will stop and briefly fixate on dogs she passes on the street but is redirected by calling her over with treats. She accepts treats from handler lightly and is brought back to the building after a while. She is clipped and returns to kennel before quickly turning around to leash bite, handler quickly removes the leash and closes the kennel door, ending interaction.
Summary (6):: 2/21/25: Atina is observed to be leashed biting and is unable to redirect with toys or treats and will continue to tug at the lead. When she is returned back to kennel, she takes the handler’s leash and begins to bark and lunge at the door. When the handler’s used a hook to retrieve the lead she would bite at the lead and hook while the handler was holding it. She would not go for the hook while it was still in kennel as long as the handler’s hand wasn’t on it. Tossing treats to the back of her kennel was a small distraction on and off. Handlers were able to get the lead out as she ate treats through the kennel door bars 2/21/25: As a handler is attempting to leash Atina, she persistently bites and pulls at the leash, even with the use of cheese and treats. Eventually, the handler was able to leash her, however, she began to leash bit again, and continued as she left her kennel. Her leash biting intensified after leaving the room, causing her mouth to bleed. The handler tossed treats and toys and used a squeaker, but Atina continued to leash bite. Another handler came by and did the same, but she kept leash biting. After a few minutes, Atina stopped and the handler conducted the walk without any issue. When returning her to her kennel, the handler left the leash on her. When the handler attempted to use a hook to retrieve the leash, Atina growled and snapped at it. Another handler came and tossed treats in the kennel to distract Atina, and after a few attempts, they were able to pull the leash out. 2/18/25: Atina is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body and slowly wagging tail as handler approaches. She dodges the lead a few times as handler attempts to leash her, but is eventually able to be leashed and brought out. As she is exiting the room, she begins to lunge and snarl at the dog in the first kennel (who is growling and barking at her). Handler brings her into the hallway, where she stops vocalizing but remains somewhat tense and vigilant of the dogs in pop-up crates in the hallway. Handler attempts to place an identiband collar on Atina and she head whips and growls as their hands approach her neck. Handler brings her to medical, which is much quieter with no dogs reacting to her. Once in medical, Atina has a loose body, wagging tail, and approaches handler socially. She appreciates pets and eats cheese; handler is easily able to collar her while distracted with cheese. Handler pre-clips her leash and brings her back to her kennel, where she briefly attempts to cage fight a neighboring dog when returning to her kennel. Handler is able to pull her away and she enters her kennel without further incident.
Summary (7):: 2/15/25: Atina is barking at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and she pulls hard out her kennel and starts to grow at the two dogs in kennel next her on the way out. She then was taken downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, she would pull to smell everywhere and would stop to receive treats from the handler. She then starts to slow down and walk slow by the handler in hopes to receive treats again. She was comfortable reapproaching the handler to sit for treats as well. On the way back to kennel, once she entered her kennel she began to leash bite and tug at the lead. The handler let's go of the lead and she pulls it inside the kennel. The handler tossed treats and she would eat them, but then go back to biting the lead. She then starts to hard bark and lung at the kennel door as the handler tries to retrieve their lead with the hook. When treats were tossed, she ignored them the first time and began biting the hook. When treats were tossed again she started to take them and then the handler was able to retrieve the lead without her going back for it. 2/13/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Atina will leash bite when being removed from kennel and when being returned. 2/8/25: Atina is at the front of her kennel with a loose wiggly body and wagging tail as handler approaches. She then begins to bark at the door as the handler was unlocking it. She was comfortable receiving treats through the door bars. She is able to be leashed and she pulled on the way downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, she liked to explore everywhere on the ground in hopes to find free treats. She would stop in front of handler and sit for more treats. She tried to pick up a piece of tissue and a candy rapper that was on the ground. She pulled on the way back to her kennel and was able to enter with no issues. 1/28/25- Atina is at the front of her kennel with a soft body, she is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. She has a moderate pull towards various spots to sniff. She is hypervigilant (looking around, tail tucked). She walks on a loose and is aloof with handler. She gently takes treats from handler and allows them to pet her chin and neck. When MOP pass her, she stops and just watches them pass. She then will continue to walk, she walks a loose leash at times next to handler. She is taken for her assessment, she is aloof at first with handlers but is easily leashed. She starts to have a softer body and social with handlers, she plays with a stuff toy. She is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary:: Tense, whale eye, flails
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Atina so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and reported bite history we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Atina has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards handlers while in possession of a leash. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Atina's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Atina has been observed to be fearful during her stay in the care center, noted to have a tense body. It is important to always go slow and give Atina the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Atina would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Bite history (human): Atina was surrender to the cops due to biting her owner but no details on the bite or severity of the bites were given. Please see the handout on Bite History. On Leash Reactivity: Atina has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards the dogs in the kennel room. Atina will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Atina has been observed to bite the leash. In kennel while handlers are leashing and while on walks. This behavior is not easily redirected using treats. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
