Animal Profile

Fuji Apple

Hello, my name is Fuji Apple. My animal id is #247571. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Fuji Apple is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Fuji Apple tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: With a comprehensive and detailed list in paw, Fuji Apple came prepared to review each and every point with me. I love a cat who comes prepared! And to be perfectly honest, I love how he kind of assumed I wasn't. I listened to him and waited, which is what I think all Fuji Apple really wanted. When he realized I was ready to go along with his ideas, he temporarily set it aside to go with the flow Fuji Apple style. Leaning his head into my hand for pets and gently nuzzling, Fuji Apple's looking for a friend. He's actually been looking for one for a little while now. Brought to us with other cats, Fuji Apple was left here without much else information. He is, however, ready for a fresh start with you.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Fuji Apple was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Fuji Apple lived with other cats in his previous home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/20/26 Vol. Fuji apple was lying on top of den, curled up in a loose ball. His eyes were neutral. His ears appeared slightly lowered, but he appears to have an ear injury, which may have been the reason. He returned slow blinks, the out his head down on his paws. He accepted squeeze up on scratcher tool, but quickly lost interest. He gently leaned into chin rubs with scratcher tool for a minute or so, remaining in a lying position on top of den. 2/25/26 Vol. Fuji is lying in loaf in his litter box. As the cubby door is opened, he flattened his ears, revealed dilated pupils through narrow eyes, whiskers back and wrapped his tail tightly around him. When approached with the tool with the treat, he swatted moderately and hissed, and remained tense while spoken too. Needs more time. 2/27/26 Vol. Sitting paws tucked in main cage, ears a little flat, eyes normal. Put in treat bowl - he started to lip lick but did not move. Approached with scratcher tool - he sniffed and it seemed he would allow touch but instead swatted tool twice and moved backwards, still lip licking. Let tool rest, started to move towards him and he wiggled back further, let tool rest and ended interaction. 3/1/26 FB73 Fuji Apple is laying curled up in the back of his kennel, body and eyes neutral. When the kennel door is opened, his ears go back slightly. He is spoken to softly and petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, and he leans into petting on the head and cheeks, closing his eyes. Interaction is ended and treats are left in the kennel with him. 03/02/26 FB47 Fuji apple was lying quietly in the kennel and watched me slowly approach. She gave a single hiss when I got close with the treat bag, but then remained quietly in place while I pet her on the cheek and the head. She flattened her head down on the floor of the kennel, but allowed the petting. 3/5/26 Vol. Fuji Apple is curled up in the center of the condo. He shows no interest in the treat extended on the tool, but it allows pets on his forehead, neck, and cheeks. Improved since last week. 3/6/26 Vol. Looked at treat bowl, ignored. Allowed head scratching with tool, leaning back and stretching out but not really appreciating chin or cheek rubs - just head. Leaned over to eat some treats, dodged tool while eating. Took a few bites, leaned back and allowed head scratches with tool - slow blink and looking up when stopped. Gave scratches until he leaned over to treats - stopped scratching. He ate a few more treats and pulled into a meatloaf. Ended interaction 3/8/26 Vol. Fuji was sitting in crouch, with paws tucked under him, against the left wall of the kennel. He hissed when I opened the kennel door and put down treats but didn’t move. I talked to him for a while, and he closed his eyes. He allowed a gentle head and cheek rub with the scratcher tool but then started to low growl. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Fuji Apple should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because behaviors seen at the Care Center [shy, fearful, timid, avoids contact] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Fuji Apple has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Fuji Apple has been fearful and avoidant of handling during his stay at the care center and may be intimidated by young children. No children under age 13, respectful older children only. Counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Fuji apple was asleep in the kennel and woke up at the sound of the door opening, looking somewhat wearily at the assessor and the scratcher tool, but sniff treats were offered to him off of the tool. Then he was gently pet on his head and cheek and he shrank to get away and then began some fairly gentle hissing, and the interaction was ended. Fuji Apple tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
