Animal Profile

Mickey

Hello, my name is Mickey. My animal id is #234503. I am a desexed male blue cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mickey is on the at-risk list due to behavior. Mickey continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

While the shelter environment can feel overwhelming for him, Mickey has already shown us glimpses of his softer side. He enjoys compliments, catnip toys, and tasty treats, and he will even give slow blinks to let you know he's listening. Though he may seem shy or reserved at first, the behavior team believes Mickey will blossom once he's in a calm, loving home where he can feel safe. He's the kind of cat who just needs a little patience and understanding before he's ready to show his full, charming personality. If you're looking for a dapper gentleman who will reward your kindness with trust and quiet companionship, Mickey may be the perfect match for you. 💕

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Upon intake cat was hissing, swatting and growling. Staff was able to scan for a MC but was not able to collar or handle.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Mickey was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He appears to have lived with 1-2 Adults. Upon intake, staff were able to scan the cat; however, immediately afterward, the cat began hissing, spitting, and swatting at them. To allow the cat some time to decompress, staff left him in his carrier with a blanket covering it. When the blanket was lifted, he began meowing and spitting again. As no dens were available, admissions staff were advised to place him in a kennel with his carrier.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/27/25 FB61 Hunched in front of cubby, body and face tense with his ears forward and tail wrapped tightly around his body. HE hisses and swats the cubby door when spoken to but I crouch down and speak to him softly while slow-blinking. He begins to soften after a few blinks and I place a catnip toy in his kennel. He hisses once more, but I continue speaking to him softly and he begins to play with his toy. He has a blast and I am happy he is engaging with his enrichment. 9/05/25 FB61 Mickey was hunched in the front of his kennel as I approached, body and face tense, ears flat, and tail wrapped around his body. Mickey began hissing continuously as I dropped treats into his kennel so I crouch down and begin speaking to him softly and slow blinking. After a few moments of this Mickey settles down, returns slow blinks and begins to eat his treats. I reward him with praise and more treats and he plays with the catnip toy I offered as well. Mickey can be seen sitting upright in his cubby after our interaction is over, his face and body relaxed as he grooms. Mickey is very scared but seems to be responding to enrichment - which is good! 9/11/25 FB61 Mickey was sitting in his cubby as I approached, body and face tense, ears forward and eyes alert. Mickey hissed and swatted his kennel door once as I crouched down, however, he vocalized when offered a toy and began playing with it immediately I speak to him softly as I make my way through the room and I offer him treats as well. Mickey loves to play and he loves treats, he’s just finding the shelter too overwhelming at this time. I don’t blame him. Will continue to provide enrichment and attempt socialization through positive reinforcement. 9/13/25 FB79 In the main part of his kennel, Mickey sits with his tail wrapped around his legs and he harshly hisses when i set in front of his kennel to look into the cage above him. Mickey continues to harshly hiss and swat at the glass even after i fully cover him and step away. 9/15/25 FB79 At the top part of his kennel, Mickey sits with his eyes wide and dilated when i bend down and speak - he hisses harshly and mock charges at the glass but remains still after with his tense body, arched back and hunched in shoulders. He quickly and harshly strikes the tool when it was slowly brought close and ends up dragging it into the kennel with him along with the assess-a-hand when that was also used in attempt to make contact. Mickey does not tolerate any attention or petting. 9/19/25 FB61 Mickey was sitting upright in front of his kennel as I approached, ears forward, face tense and tail curled around feet. Mickey enjoyed visual enrichment by watching the cat pole toy, and he played with the catnip toy offered enthusiastically when I crouch down and talk to Mickey. He meows and returns slow blinks. Mickey does not yet allow, petting or handling, however, he is becoming more curious in the shelter environment. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Mickey would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Mickey is sitting in the front of the cubby area with a tense face and body, ears forward and eyes wide and dilated. When the cubby door is opened, he tenses more and pulls back slightly with ears tilted. The scratcher tool is offered out and he begins to loudly growl and hiss before swatting at the tool multiple times. Pick up is not attempted. 9/20/25 Inside of his den, Mickey has wide dilated eyes and forward ears. When I open the kennel door he immediately starts to harshly hiss and spit from inside of the den as I speak to him. When I introduce the assess-a-hand, he strikes the glass with force repeatedly, then reaches out, striking and trying to pull the hand in with him. Mickey continues to loudly grumble/growl, and when the assessor is able to pull the hand back, he continues to swat with force and attempt to strike. Mickey continues to harshly hiss and spit, striking the glass until the assessor closes the kennel door and lowers his kennel cover. Mickey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
