Animal Profile

Stripes

Hello, my name is Stripes. My animal id is #245977. I am a desexed female gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/20/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Stripes is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is an under socialized adult cat and bonded to her sibling Sunny (245976). She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized adult cat adjust to new environments, particularly cats that may be "spirit cats".

My foster writes: Sunny (white) and Stripes (striped gray) are adorable siblings who are shy, quiet but exploratory. Stripes is very bold by trying new places to sit under and observe all day. Sunny is a little shier and follows Stripes, but also prefers to sit under all day. Given some time, they will be ready to interact with you and come out on their own! Sunny and Stripes are a sweet bonded pair who are slowly but surely learning what it means to be in a safe and loving home. During the day, they cuddle together in privacy. At night, they love to explore and play. While they are still only observing humans from afar, they do so with a soft, gentle curiosity that suggests it is only a matter of time before they fully embrace their new lives as spoiled, beloved pets. · My history is a mystery and we're still learning about my personality. I've been very nervous in the Care Center and I may be the same way in a home environment. Hopefully I can have time to relax and get more comfortable around people, but there's also a chance I may just prefer my independence. That's okay too! · Over time, I may get used to one or two people who will be allowed to touch me. I may choose to hang out near you, or sleep on the bed with you at night. · I would be a great choice for people with a quiet household, who want to make a difference for an individual cat. I will require patience and understanding. · I will not be a good choice for busy homes, including those with children. · I may be a fine choice for situations where you don't have a lot of time to devote to a pet - most kitties like me do not need or want much attention from people.

Their foster reports, "Stripes does come out very quickly once I leave the room, as long as it is dark out. I have seen her out during the day a couple of times on my pet camera when I am at work, too. She eats a lot. She also sits by my bedroom door and looks at it like she is curious to explore, but if i get anywhere near the door she runs away. She has started playing with toys overnight as well. Just that they’re super shy and anxious, taking a while to get used to and hide around humans. Cannot go near them to pet or interact as they run away immediately. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/24/28 FB58 In her den and hidden from view - she remains tense and frozen but tolerates all touch with the tool. She cannot be coaxed out of the den with treats, and I choose to reunite her with her sibling, bringing her whole den over and placing it in the cage. He brother is sitting up on the shelf with a tense face and body. 1/28/26 FB06 Stripes it out of view inside the den with her sibling. As I lift the cover, she has wide eyes and a tense face. She turns and presses herself against her sibling for protection. As I offer the scratcher and touch her side, she lets out a short low growl. 2/03/26 FB61 Hunched in cat den, pressed against den wall as her kennel-mate stands in front of her and hisses at the assessor. They are very close and he is very protective of her. I do not push any petting today, I leave some treats for them to explore later when they feel more comfortable and I slow-blink and speak to them softly before lowering the cage cover. Likely bonded. 3/29/26 FB06 When I lifted the den cover Stripes darted behind Sunny who was low growling and hissing. Stripes was pressed against the back of the den with wide eyes while Sunny was lying across her. 3/30/26 FB79 Stripes was inside of the den with sunny and remained still when i lifted the den cover; however when i brought the tool in for attempted petting she pressed herself further into the corner while Sunny hissed harshly. I spoke softly and left some treats outside of the den which i later saw were untouched. 4/2/26 FB58 In den and hidden from view, when the cage door is opened low growling can be heard and Sunny's paw reaches out to swat as I close the den portal to place two enrichment cups near the opening as well as a catnip pillow with some feliway sprayed on it. When the portal is opened again, Sunny pokes his head out (Stripes remains completely hidden) and sniffs at the cups with eyes wide and dilated, slow blinking once before he ducks back in. When I check back, the enrichment cups have been completely eaten and are somehow all the way at the front of the cage. I lift the den cover in order to be able to see Stripes as well, and she is pressed against the back. Sunny lunges at the front again but then pokes his head out to sniff at the high value treats that I placed next to the den. He seems more curious and although he is consistently low growling, he watches the room and slow blinks back at me at times before he comes out of the den fully and sits next to it tensely for some time. Stripes was reported by her fosters to be the more bold of the two siblings in the home but in shelter appears to be more shut down/ frozen with Sunny stepping up and becoming more defensive. 4/06/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, standing in back of her bonded friend. He hisses repeatedly until I walk away from his kennel. Neither cat attempts to leave the den or engage with the enrichment offered while I’m in the room.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Bonded pair,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: 3/4/26 Stripes is a shy and fearful cat that displayed a high level of FAS when she first came to the shelter. She came from a home with 8 other cats and appears to have had limited (if any) interactions with strangers before entering into the shelter. Due to this history, she has an increased flight risk as well as a risk of defensive aggression/behaviors when frightened. Pick up and handling may be more difficult in a larger space and she may need to be confined in a bathroom and a towel will need to be used for easier handling. The behavior team recommends crate training her as well to make travel and trips to the vet easier. There was a previous bite incident on 2/22/26 in the foster home as her new foster was picking Stripes and her sibling Sunny from her former foster's home. Stripes would run every time the fosters attempted to pick her up to place her into the carrier. The new foster parent was able to grab her and upon doing so, Stripes bit her on her left hand, leaving a puncture wound. They were able to get Stripes into the carrier shortly after without further incident. Her new foster parent received medical care for the bite at MedRite Midtown East Urgent Care. Stripes is up to date on her rabies vaccine and was vaccinated on 1/20/2026. "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Stripes will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Stripes being a Spirit Cat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Stripes would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 1/22/26 Inside of the den, Stripes has her paws tucked with wide eyes and her tail around her body; she backed away when the assessor lifted the den cover and started to breath heavily. She tolerated petting on her back and around her body but when petting on her head and cheeks was attempted she would duck and dodge the tool to avoid contact. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 3/27/26 On approach, Stripes is in her den with her bonded sibling Sunny (245976), and hidden from view. When the den cover is lifted, she is plastered against the back of the den with her head low, eyes wide and ears tilted. The assessor is able to make contact with her as she remains tense and frozen. She doesn't appear comfortable with the contact and is pressed as far back as she can be. Pick up is not attempted. There is a high chance that Stripes may be more of a Spirit cat" than a cat that is capable of and willing to be social with people. Stripes is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
