Animal Profile

Leo

Hello, my name is Leo. My animal id is #226323. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/4/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Leo is at risk due to detailed behaviors. During intake Leo was observed to hard bark, lunge and snap towards people and dogs. After reacting to stimuli Leo was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Due to the high levels of reactivity Leo has received limited handling. In kennel, Leo has a neutral body. Medically Leo is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Leo arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. We have a limited history on Leo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, leo has been observed to be highly dog reactive. Observed to hard bark, lunge, and snap towards dogs and people. After reacting to stimuli leo was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Date of assessment:: 5/6/2025

Summary:: Leo arrived at MACC with their owners looking to surrender. During intake Leo was lunging, hard barking and snapping towards dog and people that passed by, at one point almost making contact with a member of the public. Leo's head was darting back and forth and was reacting to stimuli from about 50ft away, displaying the same behaviors. Leo was tied to another dog and they began to redirect onto each other after reacting. Due to the high levels of reactivity, Leo is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 5/7/25: Leo is at the front of the kennel as a dog is being put into kennel next to him. Leo begins hard barking and lunging toward the dog. Kicking the water bucket and standing on it trying to get closer to the kennel door. 5/5/25: Leo is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He has a neutral body and tilts his head when the handler speaks in a soft tone. The handler offers Leo a treat, he takes it with a soft mouth but drops it immediately. He continues to look at the handler. Handler ends interaction. 5/4/25: Leo is observed to be lunging, hard barking, and snapping (almost making contact with MOP hand) in front of the care centers. He has a tense body and heavily pulling forward when not lunging. His head darting back and forth and is reacting to both people and dogs walking past him, as well as from a distance. Handler stands about 50 feet away and Leo hard stares and begins to display the same behavior as mentioned above. Handler walks in the other direction. Intake Behavior: 5/5/25 (late entry)- K9 behavior assisted with bringing Leo in. Handlers had owner put a slip lead on and his original walking gear was a slip lead. Handlers took the leashes and Leo looked back at handler with a neutral body, then sniffed around in the drive way. He was brought to the pharmacy and was gate squeezed to be sedated. After shot was administered Leo started to climb up the gate while whining with a tense body. Handler with second leash pulled him away from first handler. They didn't tethered his leash and waited till Leo was calmer to pass off second leash. He whined while on the floor then got up again to jump towards first handler, second handler pulled him away. Once Leo was asleep second leash was pass to VS. K9 behavior ended their interaction.

Date of intake:: 5/4/2025

Summary:: Hard barking, lunging, and snapping

Date of initial:: 5/4/2025

Summary:: Nervous, tense body. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have a history on Leo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, lunging and snapping towards dogs and redirecting onto a familiar dog we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: On Leash Reactivity: Leo has been observed to hard bark, lunge and snap towards people and dogs while on leash. After reacting to stimuli leo was observed to redirect onto a familiar dog. Leo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
