Animal Profile

Arlo

Hello, my name is Arlo. My animal id is #248340. I am a desexed male silver dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Arlo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Arlo has shown defensive behavior when being returned to his kennel, including stiffening, hard barking, lunging, and snapping toward handlers through the kennel door. During one incident, he lunged toward a handler's face while being placed back into his kennel. Outside of his kennel, Arlo is social with handlers, allows handling and being picked up, and solicits attention. Medically, Arlo is healthy at this time. Arlo would benefit from a routine dental cleaning and maintaining regular grooming.

Arlo would benefit from a routine dental cleaning and maintaining regular grooming. Arlo was first surrendered to the care centers as a stray in February 2026, and was returned by his adopter in October 2026 due to behavioral concerns and not having enough time to care for him. His previous owner describes Arlo as a friendly, outgoing, playful dog who loves squeaky toys, and he has shown social behavior with staff while at the care center. Arlo is reported to have bitten twice in the home, when an unfamiliar person reached for him while he was being held; one of these bites broke skin, leaving a small puncture. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home, a period of decompression, and evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 10/24/2026

Summary:: Arlo's previous owners report that Arlo has bitten twice, breaking skin once. Both incidents occurred when Arlo was being held, and an unfamiliar person went to take Arlo from the person holding him. For more information, please see bite history above. Due to Arlo's bite history and sensitivity to handling by unfamiliar people, a handling assessment is not conducted. 2/28/26: Previous assessment available on request.

Summary:: Arlo arrived as an owner surrender and is noted to be friendly and outgoing around familiar dogs. He is shy around unfamiliar dogs. 10/24/26: Arlo greets a novel female dog through a barrier but has difficulty navigating the yard due to his hair obstructing his eyes. The novel female remains neutral bodied and orients toward Arlo but largely stands in place without attempting to further engage. Due to Arlo's difficulty visually navigating the environment, a more involved interaction is not attempted. 03/02/26 Arlo is introduced to two novel males while off leash. He displays a neutral frame initially but becomes tense whenever either male approach. He keeps to self, walking along the fence line and begins to tense and move away slowly. When the male continues to approach, he snaps in his direction. The other male is moved away and Arlo sticks close to handler and begins to hypersalivate, so he is taken back inside.

Summary (6):: 11/1 (PM): Arlo is at the front of his kennel, whining when a handler approaches. He is easily leashed and lifted out of kennel without issue. He is taken outside for a walk where he explores scents the majority of the time, only stopping to relieve himself. When being returned to the kennel, the handler clips the lead while in the hallway and towels him with a large towel and quickly puts him back in the kennel. Once in kennel, Arlo stares at the back wall for a few seconds after coming out of the towel. The handler uses a squeaky tennis ball to distract him while they lock his kennel door. Arlo begins lunging with his teeth bared while snarling twice after the handler secures the kennel door. 11/1/26: Arlo was lying down on his blankets as handler approached. When handler unlocked kennel Arlo moved forward where he was easily leashed and picked up from his top kennel and placed on the ground with no issue. While walking Arlo maintained a neutral body an walked next to handler lightly pulling. Once outside Arlo relieved himself and then sniffed and investigated the area. Once he was placed back in his kennel he went in toward the back and then turned around and looked at handler. As handler was attempting to lock his kennel he started barking and lunging toward the area where handler was locking kennel. Once handler walked away Arlo calmed down and lied down in his kennel. 10/29/26: Arlo was at front of kennel with a neutral body where he was easily leashed and taken to the behavior room for a walk. He walked next to handler thru hallway with a slack lead. In room he was social with handler. He would sniff and investigate his way around the behavior room. He found some a sniffle mat that had some treats and engaged with it. Once he was back in his kennel he turned around quickly and started to bark and lunge at handler. Handler was able to quickly get hands away and shut kennel door.

Summary (7):: 10/27/26: Arlo is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and allows for handler to pick him up and carry him to the Canine Behavior Office. Arlo spends several minutes exploring the space and will intermittently take treats. Handler pats on the couch and Arlo will jump up, allowing handler to pick him up with a neutral frame. Handler removes the leash when in front of kennel and places him inside. Once closing the kennel door, Arlo will turn around and begin hard barking and snapping at handler's fingers through the kennel door. They have to distract him with a long treat in order to remove the carabiner from the kennel door and secure the kennel safely. 10/25: Discussed with Canine Behavior that Arlo was to receive staff walks. I provided them with a Behavior Walks tag and asked if I could bring Arlo into the room to take updated photos. When I removed Arlo from his kennel, his body was loose and wiggly. He entered the Canine Behavior office without issue and was very friendly, soliciting attention. When I returned him to his kennel, I picked him up and began placing him inside. His hindquarters stiffened as he entered the kennel, and as I assisted him, he quickly turned around and lunged toward my face. I was able to close the kennel door in time and avoid contact. I notified Canine Behavior, and staff came to remove his lead using a hook, as Arlo was barking intensely at the front of the kennel. A Behavior Walks Only tag was then placed back on his kennel. 10/24/26 (D2D): Arlo was lying at the back of his kennel as handler approached. He was easily leashed and taken to the back yard for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). Walking thru the building he had a neutral body and walked next to handler with a slack lead. After his playgroup session he was taken back to kennel. Once he was placed back in the kennel he spun around and starting growling and barking and handler. Handler ended interaction by walking away and not interacting with him during this behavior display.

Date of intake:: 10/18/2026

Summary:: Friendly and social

Date of initial:: 10/20/2026

Summary:: Timid, initially reluctant to walk, warmed up and took treats

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Arlo's bite history, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns in a home environment, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity | Fearful | Multiple bite history/ risk of future aggression | Bite history (human): Arlo's previous owners report that he has bitten twice when an unfamiliar person has reached for him while being held. In one case, the bite broke skin and left a small puncture wound. During his intake during his first stay at the care center, Arlo was very avoidant at first and would dodge staff when approaching him. A towel was used to pick him up and he was easily leashed. When picked up, he was noted to yelp. Training should focus on slow, choice-based interactions, gentle desensitization to touch and lifting, and reinforcing voluntary engagement to reduce fear-based avoidance. Please see handouts on Handling/touch sensitivity, Decompression period, and Bite history/potential for future aggression. Separation Anxiety: Arlo is reported to be anxious when left alone. While we do not know the nature or extent of this behavior, we recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Arlo's previous owners report that he barks at moving objects on walks. On his first intake (Feb 2026), he would also bark as he heard people pass by in the hallway. Arlo may benefit from positive reinforcement training to teach him to pay attention to you rather than other objects or people. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
