Brock
Hello, my name is Brock. My animal id is #233342. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/31/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - cancer.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBrock is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Brock arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. Brock's previous owner reported that Brock is fearful of loud noises and is reactive to other dogs. Despite efforts to keep Brock comfortable, he has remained fearful and reactive to dogs. For walks and in play-yard, Brock has been observed to be tense bodied, tucked tail, and kennel reactive. Additionally Brock has shown reactivity with hard staring and tense body to other dogs that is difficult to redirect. When attempting handling assessments Brock has remained highly fearful with a tense body, hard staring, tucked tail and briefly lip curling. Staff notes that Brock treat motivated, is easily leashed for walks, and with familiar staff is social. Medically, Brock is being treated for CIRDC and unspecified Dermatitis.

Brock is a 5-year-old medium mixed breed who was surrendered when his owner's health made care difficult. He's a mellow, sensitive guy who prefers contact on his terms and does best with gentle handling and a calm routine. My Ideal Home An experienced, adult-only home that moves slowly, gives Brock space to decompress, and uses force-free, reward-based training. Predictable structure, consent-based handling, and quiet enrichment (sniff walks, food puzzles) will help him relax and build trust. Good with Kids? Recommended no children (under 13) due to fearfulness and preference for low-pressure interaction. Good with Other Pets? Dogs: history of hard barking/growling; needs slow, structured introductions and management (no dog parks). Cats: reported friendly in previous home; any intro should be gradual and supervised. Leash Manners Generally walks on a loose leash but may pull hard and fixate around other dogs. A front-clip harness, distance increases, and reinforcing check-ins/loose-leash skills are recommended.

Date of assessment:: 9/22/2025
Summary:: *9/22/25* When brought into the assessment room Brock was observed to be very tense and fearful. Noted to have a tense body and show whale eye whenever the handler moved. The handler offers a treat and Brock is receptive however, he does not warm up to the handler and his body does not soften. He remains tense. As the handler continues to offers treats and presents the collar Brock becomes increasingly more and begins to hesitant before accepting the treat. The handler moves the collar towards Brock to allow him to interact with it Brock begins to hard stare towards the handler. Due to the high level of FAS the handler ends the interaction. *9/7/25:*When brought into the assessment room Brock was highly fearful and tense. He was not receptive to different treats, coaxing or squeakie sounds. When approached Brock began hard staring toward the handler with a tense body and tucked tail. When the handler attempted to place a collar on him Brock moved away from the handler and briefly lifted his lip. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Brock is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 9/29/25: It is reported that Brock will become tense and hover with a hard stare while he has food in his possession. He continues to remain tense and hard stare towards the handler as they begin to move away. 9/28/25: Brock is observed to have a tense body with widened eyes as he hard stares at a handler while hovering over his food in kennel.
Summary (7):: 9/24/25: It is reported by staff that Brock did not want to leave his kennel. 9/22/25- Brock is laying down at the back of his kennel with a neutral body, he comes to the front and is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk. He gently takes treats from handler's hand and is only social when treats are presented. He walks on a loose leash and watches people when walking past him with a neutral body. When returning in the drive way sees another dog and fixates with a medium tail and slight tense body. Handler uses their squeaker but doesn't redirect, they present a treat which momentaily gets his attention then goes back to looking at the dog . Handler tugs him away and he is taken for his assessment. He is aloof with other handler and again only interacting if treats are present. He hard stares when handlers move around him. Assessment is ended is early due to hard staring and being tense. When returning to his kennel he sees familiar handlers in the hallway and becomes loose and wiggly. He is easily clipped and returned to his kennel without issue. 09/20/25: Brock is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats which he accepts softly with a neutral body and slight wagging tail. Brock exits kennel following handler and accepts more treats gently and enters the elevator, then out to the street for his walk. Brock walks slowly while outside and does not pull, he frequently stops to sniff spots on the street and scent mark. He also will stop frequently to look behind him even when there is nothing behind him. Brock passes people on the street without issue and when seeing dogs is neutral bodied and will stare at dogs passing but shows no further reaction to them. Brock walks for a while and relieves himself while outside, he is brought back to the care centers after a bit and allows handler to clip his leash. Brock is walked back to kennel and pulls suddenly and hard toward the dogs reacting in the first two kennels in the room. Handler has to muscle him away and into kennel quickly. Once returned handler secures the kennel door before ending the interaction. 9/7/25: Brock is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he had a tense body and tucked tail and avoids eye contact with the handler. He had no reactions to dogs or people. He is the taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he has a tense body and his eyes would widened as the handler tries to collar him. Due to fearfulness, his assessment is unable to be completed. He is slowly taken back to his kennel with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Brock will become tense and hover with a hard stare while he has food in his possession. He continues to remain tense and hard stare towards the handler as they begin to move away. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Brock mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Brock's previous owner states that he is fearful when his paws were touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Brock to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Brock's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards strangers and is fearful of loud noises. In care Brock has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body and hard stare towards the handler with a tucked tail. It is important to move slowly with Brock, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Brock's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards dogs. Brock will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Brock's previous owner states that he will pulls hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
