Animal Profile

Philly

Hello, my name is Philly. My animal id is #229739. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Philly is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of [petting-induced aggression, boredom and frustration, overstimulation, etc.]. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats or dogs. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: Philly's a busy guy and told me as much when he went to hop over my arm and onto the floor. Places to go, people to see, you know how it goes. I told him I didn't because I'm actually more of a homebody, to which Philly considered for all of half a second (it's his way) and then presented me with his chin for some scritches. Theatrically stretching onto his side and reaching his paws, Philly conceded that staying in with good friends has some benefits. Cuddly and extraordinarily playful, Philly's a guy on the move. Chasing after his pipe cleaner feather or leaping onto his condo shelf and back into my arms, he always wants to be doing something. Brought to us from a home with many other cats when their guardian passed away, Philly's on the lookout for a fresh start and is hoping that it can be with you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/17/25 Vol. In main kennel area, eating dry food. Looked up when spoken to with normal eyes. Ate from a cup of squeeze-up and Temptations pushed through the bars. Initially ignored the cat dancer and ate wet food instead, then played for ~5 minutes, batting and biting it, and carrying the feathers in his mouth. After playtime, sniffed my fingers a few times, but did not lean in. Then lay down in the the cubby and allowed head scratches, head bunting gently for more attention and moving head around. 8/19/25 Vol. Came right up to door for attention. Accepted several minutes of head rubs. Ate Squeeze-ups from finger. Loved playing with the tassel toy and the catnip toy. Sweet boy! 8/24/25 Vol. Philly was curled up tight in his litter box. He was very under the weather (very congested). He was not interested in treats or interacting. He lifted his head for a second when I opened the cubby door and put down treats, but he quickly put his head back down without sniffing the treats. 9/4/25 FB32 Lying down curled up on the shelf with his head tucked in and tail wrapped around his body. When spoken to and opening the door, he perks up and hovers over the front of the shelf and head bunts for petting. He accepts treats offered and leans in hard for cheek rubs. He is easily coaxed with more treats and petting to climb down to the main kennel area. When stroking his back and rotating his body, he stands his ground and swishes his tail. During pick up, he is calm and relaxed, rests his front limbs on the assessor's arm, continues to swish his tail, and allows petting all over when held for 5 seconds. After placing him back down on the shelf, he continues to appreciate more petting and cheek rubs; however, when holding him back on his head in order to replace his soiled linens, he short stress meows and swats the air to get my hand off of his head. He recovers fairly quickly and lies down in loaf position on the shelf. Much improved tolerance with handling, but still shows signs of overstimulation. 9/9/25 Sitting in back of kennel. Ate 3 Squeeze-ups from clicker. Tolerated a few minutes of head scratches with tool. When I attempted to scratch by hand, he lunged towards me so I ended interaction to avoid FAS.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Sweet,Curious,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Uncomfortable with pick up,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Displaying conflicted behavior; he will rubs his face on the assessor's hand but he may hiss or gently swat when unsure about the attention. During pick up, he tenses up, stress meows, and hisses when briefly held. He may become agitated, territorial, or defensive when being bothered from resting or hiding in a litter/hidey box before preparing for transport (see Enrichment Notes above from 8/15/25 for more details). His tolerance for petting and handling has improved; however, he may show signs of overstimulation (see Enrichment Notes above from 9/4/25 for more details).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children,No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,No dogs

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 years old due to conflicted or fearful behavior. Counselor discretion is advised. No cats or dogs due to reports of how Philly plays rough curious, stress meows, hisses, growls, nips, swats, bites at them.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Philly was sitting up at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he hovers over the front entrance and sniffs treats offered. He welcomes petting on the head and rubs his face on the assessor's hand to solicit attention. He leans in hard for cheek rubs and raises his hips and tail in the air when stroking his body. During pick up, he tenses up, stress meows, and hisses when briefly held. After placing him back down, he recovers fairly quickly and continues to tolerate more petting and rub his face on the assessor's hand/body for more cheek rubs; however, after closing the door, he hisses and reaches his paw out to swat the assessor. Philly interacts with the observer, tolerates attention and petting, but appears moderately/somewhat fearful or stressed in the shelter and he did not appear to like being picked up during the behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any future home with children should be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
